HJZM : THE BUTTERFLY PHANTASY by A.C.EHJZM : The Butterfly Phantasy (호접지몽 - 蝴蝶之夢) is the third mini album by A.C.E. It was released on September 2, 2020 with Favorite Boys serving as the title track.The song Stand By You was pre-released on June 24, 2020.The Korean name of the album, The Butterfly Dream, is a reference to one of the most famous stories of Zhuāngzǐ, an ancient Chinese text from the late Warring States period (476–221 BC) which contains stories and anecdotes that exemplify the carefree nature of the ideal Daoist sage. Named for its traditional author, Zhuāngzǐ (莊子), the text is one of the two foundational texts of Daoism, along with the Dàodé Jīng (道德經).The most famous of all Zhuāngzǐ stories—Zhuāng Zhōu Dreams of Being a Butterfly (莊周夢蝶)—appears at the end of the second chapter, On the Equality of Things (齊物論).昔者莊周夢為胡蝶，栩栩然胡蝶也，自喻適志與。不知周也。Once, Zhuāng Zhōu dreamed he was a butterfly, a butterfly flitting and fluttering about, happy with himself and doing as he pleased. He didn't know that he was Zhuāng Zhōu.俄然覺，則蘧蘧然周也。不知周之夢為胡蝶與，胡蝶之夢為周與。周與胡蝶，則必有分矣。此之謂物化。Suddenly he woke up and there he was, solid and unmistakable Zhuāng Zhōu. But he didn't know if he was Zhuāng Zhōu who had dreamt he was a butterfly, or a butterfly dreaming that he was Zhuāng Zhōu. Between Zhuāng Zhōu and the butterfly there must be some distinction! This is called the Transformation of Things.—Zhuāngzǐ, chapter 2 (Watson translation)The well-known image of Zhuāngzǐ wondering if he was a man who dreamed of being a butterfly or a butterfly dreaming of being a man is so striking that whole dramas have been written on its theme. In it Zhuāngzǐ "plays with the theme of transformation", illustrating that "the distinction between waking and dreaming is another false dichotomy. If one distinguishes them, how can one tell if one is now dreaming or awake?"The comeback schedule continues with the butterfly theme…And so does the track list. The track list, along with the album cover, brings in visual elements of Painting of the Sun, Moon and the Five Peaks (일월오봉도 - 日月五峯圖), a stylized Korean folding screen of the Joseon king.One of the songs is called Baby Tonight, with its Korean name as 황홀경 (恍惚境), which literally means trance state, referring to ecstasy, a state of excitement that dizzies one’s mind through astonishment and visceral emotion.The photo book is a work of art, referencing heavily to traditional Korean art and aesthetics. The book is designed as a traditional East Asian-styled book, with traditional book title design (written top to bottom within a white rectangle) and a traditional East Asian-styled seal stamp. In the back are columns of Hangeul texts written top to bottom, as how it was traditionally done. The font of the texts (both Hangeul and Hanja) are also meticulously designed in standard calligraphic styles.Not to mention the stunning underwater photoshoot with the group members in flowing hanbok robes.Let’s not forget the slews of beautifully done concept photos. The first batch of concept photos give off a dream-like hallucinatory state very much reminiscent of the Daoist concept of the Butterfly Dream, once again borrowing the aesthetics of Painting of the Sun, Moon and the Five Peaks.The second batch continues with the eery concept of dreamscape, using vibrant trees and flowers with a white background to give off themes of butterflies and impermanence.The third batch once again plays with the concept of dreams and illusions. The group members don modernized hanbok sewn in soft transparent silk, giving the illusion of flow and fog. Their robes also reminisce of butterfly wings, which can look transparent under the tricks of the light.The last batch is to promote the title track, which is also called Goblin. The members abandon the dream quality of the other concept photos, and instead don modernized hanbok in front of the imagery of dokkaebi (도깨비), a hanbok-donning legendary natural spirit from Korean mythology and folklore with extraordinary powers and abilities that are used to interact with humans, at times playing tricks on them and at times helping them. It goes well with the name of the title track, as the creature is also called the Korean goblin.Once again playing into the idea of impermanence and the illusory nature of sight, dokkaebi are creatures one must see to believe in its existence.The MV itself is another story. Named Favorite Boys and Goblin, the Korean name of the song is Dokkaebi, referring to the mythical creature. Although the song itself is pretty modern, and the instruments are also highly Western, the lyric and the aesthetic are something else.The lyric is in the point of view of a dokkaebi, who’s playing tricks on someone he loves. He keeps trying his best to make the person fall in love with him for fun, as a trick, as dokkaebi do. Mentions of jumping into another dimension also references the idea of the Butter Dream, in which things can disappear and reappear at will, confusing reality and dream.Aesthetically, it’s a modern mixture of Korean traditions. You can spot the modernized hanbok, the folding screen landscape art, the long-sleeved Korean dance, the Korean-styled interior design, the traditional miniature landscape art, the Korean architectural dancheong (단청 - 丹靑) aesthetic, the modernized Korean architecture, the use of color white as a traditional Korean color as well as motif for the Butterfly Dream and its emphasis on impermanence of reality and illusion.
