Ooh, there’s a good one. So here’s the first problem: When was Rivera’s “prime”?I’m going to take 2004–2008, when he had 199 saves with 352 K, 67 BB, gave up only 16 HR and 87 runs in 347 innings. His ERA+ was 231 with a .941 WHIP, which are probably the best summary numbers for someone used in his role. He almost always started an inning, so he didn’t have issues around allowing inherited runners to score and he nearly always finished the game, which means he didn’t have to worry about someone allowing runners he left on to score. He appeared in 339 games over the period and finished 314 of them. Over that period, batters were 208/256/277 against him. Those are insane numbers.Eckersley is a little easier. 1998 to 1992 including his amazing 0.61 ERA year. Like Mo, he usually started the 9th and finished 284 out of 310 games over the period. 220 saves with 378 K, 38 BB, 28 HR and 82 runs in 359.2 innings. His ERA+ was 198 with a .792 WHIP. And if Mo’s numbers were insane, how do you describe a 190/214/288 opponents slash line?And before anybody says “Well, Mo was the best at getting weak contact,” yes, he was amazing at that. But his batting average against on balls in play (BABIP) was .267 for that period. Eck’s was .243.So what would you get if you had Mo instead of Eck for those 5 years? The IP are close but I’ll normalize them to 350 IP and I’m not going to count saves because opportunities are so team-dependent.26 more hits allowed2 more runs allowed, 1 more earned run allowed12 fewer HR allowed26 more BB and 17 more HBP38 fewer strikeouts1 more wild pitch.That’s really close. If you look at it as “their job is to prevent runs”, there’s really nothing to choose from there: a 2.09 RA for Rivera, 2.05 for Eck.If you look at it on the peripherals, there’s a little edge for Eck for allowing fewer BB+HBP (putting fewer runners on himself) and striking out more. Given the same defense behind them, there’s reason to think that would lead to fewer runs. But it’s razor thin: 9 fewer baserunners and 7 more strikeouts per season. And he has the advantage in opponents AVG/OBP and BABIP. The only area Mo is ahead here is SLG, because he gave up fewer HR, but Eck was better at keeping guys off base so limits the damage that way.It’s heresy to say anyone was better than Rivera and I’d absolutely take him on career value, but I’ve got to say that if I had my choice of those two five-year peaks, I’d take Eckersley. But I wouldn’t say you were wrong if you took Rivera instead.
