Q. What has shocked you the most about Tesla?A. It shocked me that this shocked me:I just finished a 20-hour, 1100mile road trip, and the car drove the whole way (on the highway) except the last few miles. It is Christmas Eve, I just arrived in Fort Wayne Indiana to visit my mother. And so did the fog.33 degrees Fahrenheit…97% humidity…visibility…..…well…take a look for yourself…Here is where the car warned me that she could not see too well and asked (well… insisted, actually) that I take over:3 trees and a pickup at ~40 feet (12 meters):8 trees and a van at ~80 feet (24 meters):4 trees and a car, and a really bright streetlight, by the way, at ~100 feet (30 meters):Can’t make out that last one too well?Don’t worry, neither can I …or anyone else driving tonight.People are slowing way down and putting on the emergency flashers so other cars won’t run into them.And this is what it takes nowadays to make the Tesla Autopilot give up. And, actually, I am suspicious that the car could see fine—better than me—but maybe she turned it over to me just to make sure I was paying attention. She does that—checking on me to make sure that I am not, like, staring out some side window checking out chicks. She checks on me if she is not sure. I guess she doesn’t trust me yet.OR…I can’t help myself, I imagine the car saying to me: “Hey, I’m not driving in this crap. Do you think I’m stupid? You do it!”Remember, the car has more eyes than us, her eyes have really good night vision, and her RADAR and SONAR can see right through that fog. So I bet she can still see fine.So when the car gave up after driving for almost 20 hours……I heard myself actually say, in a pretty sarcastic tone: “Oh, come on Eva! You can see fine.”(Eva is the car’s name).Then I said:“Who said that? Did I say that? I can’t believe I said that.”Weird. I know.Talking to a car. Talking to myself. Talking to the Universe at large.Maybe Frank needs a little rest.~~~~So……I am shocked that the Tesla Autopilot has come so far in the year I have owned the car.…I am shocked how well it can see—it continued driving in these conditions above until it started looking like the last picture—and then, even I was thinking it is time to stop driving.…And I am shocked how much confidence I have in this car, in the conditions it is designed and tested to handle, so far.~~~~Lastly, you may ask why I drove my Tesla all the way from Denver to Indiana instead of flying. Well, that shocks me too. Because I was a professional pilot (Navy). I flew helicopters and airliners and hold an Airline Transport Pilot license. I used to relish flying. Preferring it especially for distances this long. What changed?The answer is, driving has become a lot easier and safer in the Tesla, and I like to have it with me now. I consider flying and renting a car a burden…compared to having the car drive me to where I am going, and then having it on hand. I think it is much safer than any other car, and don’t really want to risk renting a car anymore, unless I have to.Denver to DC for 3 days—OK, I’ll rent. I have favorite restaurants along the way, so I stop where I like to eat, and make the charging fit that. He was never a tenured professor, never wrote any notable legal treatises, and frankly (as near as I can tell) was utterly unremarkable as both attorney and law professor—I’m sure he was fully competent… but if he hadn’t gone into politics, I see no evidence that we’d even know his name.This isn’t a “bash Obama” answer. I’m not saying he was a bad lawyer, nor that his lack of legal accolades has any bearing on his presidential career. Even the fact that he’s no longer licensed says nothing about his 20-years-ago competency or about him as a person—merely that law has been a complete non-priority for him in he past decade.But his resume frankly looks nothing like the resume of a well-qualified Supreme Court Justice.An Obama nomination would be rank partisanship, in a way that we truly have not seen in my lifetime—it would make both the Garland affair and the Kavanaugh borking look like mature bipartisanship.Because the only conceivable reason to nominate Barack Obama to the Supreme Court would be because of the outcomes he’d be likely to vote for—he’s not qualified… but he sure will vote reliably liberal!That being said, I’ve heard no one seriously proposing this. We haven’t sunk that far yet.

Houston has a major port facility and it is the center of the US energy industry.
