I made the extra effort to vote as an expat. The thought of Hillary Clinton in the White House was just too much to bear. So I thought, “Who can beat her”? The Republicans had some very good contenders for the spot, some not-so-good, and a couple of “its election time again, so off to run I go!” types that will never have a prayer. It soon became apparent to me who had a chance to win in November, and it was a very short list. At the top of those contenders was Donald Trump, because he was an outsider in a year when insiders were disdained. He was meaner than a junk-yard dog, which is exactly what you need when a gang of thugs are planning a heist. I thought he had baggage, but I also thought it was 2016. We survived Kennedy and Marilyn, and a few more besides. That plus the Clinton years and the “Access Hollywood Bus” tape had about as much meaning as a hot dog in a steak house. We had Hillary on record making angry, hostile and even sometimes racist statements, so all allegations against Trump, which were mostly just that, allegations, fell flat. The non-issues that would come against Trump were all things Democrats had in spades, so survivability, usually a concern, was not high on the list. It was electability that mattered, and Trump had it. I didn’t really think he would win, to be honest. I thought he would come closer than anyone else, though, so he got my primary vote.The Polls were skewed. It is hard to really know why, but they were. When Trump pulled off the greatest upset since Dewey vs Truman, everyone was surprised. Though he denies it, I think Trump was like the dog that liked to chase cars. He finally caught a big one, and was like, OMG, now what!That was then. Now, over two years later, he has done what few politicians have ever done. He actually went to work to keep the promises he campaigned on. He has been, and currently is under the most unrelenting and horrific attacks that a person can endure, and yet, he is the freakin Eveready Bunny. He has not only done what he said he would do, (with the only exceptions being those Democrats have used every dirty trick in the book to obstruct), he has been disengaging the nation from now largely unnecessary foreign interventions, forced NATO to finally pony up more (and more to come) for the mutual defense agreement, and brought the best economy to the nation in years. For me, I would have been happy to get a conservative Supreme Court justice appointed, and call it good, but he has two, and possibly a third will come.In short, not only has he not disappointed, he has been brilliant. His family, also under constant pressure, has been growing into the Trump families new found national roles. Ivanka, in a recent interview, has gone from seeming naïvete to being a person of depth and understanding who, in the future, should she so desire, could be electable on her own merits.We have a country on the precipice. The raging insanity of creeping socialism finally made an all out run for the goal line and was tackled ten yards out and the ball is in the hands of the other team. The socialist defense is trying so hard to gain a fumble and get back on track. When they do, they will kill referees to score this time. I thought Trump was the only person who could beat Clinton, and it turns out to be true. I now think he is rebuilding the strength of the conservatives of the country and giving the United States a second wind, when we were almost converted to the very form of government we spent so many years in cold war trying to defeat, and all this from a man that many Republicans said was not even a true member of the club.He has earned more than my hope. He has earned my respect. I think all of them have risen above the mere self-seeking of the past, not that they were not just as entitled as anyone else to work the system for success. They have taken roles that actually cost them things, and put them at risk. They did it, I think, because there was no one else. Even the Republicans were moving the center line slowly toward the left, trying to preserve positions even while embracing a base farther to the left as they did it. Those of us who have been fans of the American dream all of our lives have virtually vexed our souls watching what has been happening, and now, thanks to Trump and company, we have a chance to set things right. But it is not over. Trump will be gone soon. Perhaps he will lose in 2020, perhaps he can hang on to 2024, he could leave office for other reasons, including death (the statistics say the older we get the more likely we are to die). In any case, he will be passing quite a torch. It is my firm hope that a company of people will be emboldened by the challenge to the spirit of futility that has been mounted, and that we will again rise to the occasion, and stop the downward swirl into globalistic altruism that is bound for disaster. We have one more chance, Americans. Don’t blow it.
