As I read through the responses I realized that the answers were all here, nearly every one of them, and there was little I could add.I do recall being 18 years old, and filling out my "Last Will and Testament", and thinking that my high school classmates weren't doing this... I remember to the day each of the 6 times I spoke the solemn Oath of enlistment, and thereby signed a Blank Check - made payable to the US government for any amount, up to, and including my life, if necessary-in defense of America.Yes, I am a Combat Veteran ( three tours in Vietnam ) and I happen to be "Partially Disabled"...so as a Veteran, I know the "Cost" of Service, of War, and I know all too well how our Veterans are treated when they return home from the battlefield. More than that, I know the value of a dollar, I understand the sweat, and work, that an American worker had to do to provide that dollar to the government. I know that worker is counting on retiring one day, and receiving the fair share of Social Security Benefits that he dutifully invested from each hour's labor...and that it should be considered "Sacred". It's not a "Slush Fund" for pork barrel projects, or congressional vacations to Puerto Rico.Veterans are trained to stay on the job and to produce Results, not Excuses. Truth be told, most of them are lousy politicians. They are Tenacious, Business minded, in-your-face, fearless, trained "Leaders" who inspire confidence, action, and accomplishment. They can't stand critical action not being taken and seeing urgent requirements requirement not getting done! They know that the best way to get results, is "Leadership by Example". Well, Veteran Leaders are watching - a whole lot of people in Washington DC milling about, and no measurable accomplishments, so they are doing what they are doing what leaders do, what they have always done: They are "Stepping UP".We would be wise to listen to, and take advantage of the years of experience, leadership, and know-how that our Veterans bring to the table. They are organized, determined, strong, intelligent, experienced, and nobody is more Patriotic. If you do nothing different, you'll always get the same result. Let's stop kicking the can down the road & try something new.

You are looking at the question wrongly. There is no reason or benefit to isolating one segment of the US Veteran population from another. Vets are Vets, black, white, ft skinny, tall, sort, male… and yes female. They never did that to you! Veterans are the ( less than ) one half of one percent of Americans who stepped up and signed a “Blank Check” payable to the United States, for any amount up to and including their lives if necessary. Imagine being 18 years old, and filling out your “Last Will and Testament” before doing your job...While it is true that programs are available to help Veterans be self sufficient, the fact that there are over 120,000 homeless prior service personnel proves that the ball is being dropped, nationwide. Perhaps it’s a matter of getting the information into the right hands at the right time. Perhaps it’s counselling veterans who have given up on themselves, their government, and on Americans. Many have medical problems for which they cannot get treatment, and that is disgusting. Some have lost family members, or indeed entire families.More government regulations, programs ( with strict requirement and criteria ) is Not the answer. Cost cutting, bonuses for VA claims reps, and finding ways to disqualify veterans will never work either.Before you preach to me about how great the “Free Medical” is, understand that I have been repeatedly shafted by the “Magical System”. I’m 69 years old, and suffer from extreme “Suicide Headaches” for which only TWO medication can provide relief: Oxygen - which Medicare, the Military, and VA refuse to provide.. and a Triptan drug. I have suffered 294 excruciating & debilitating onsets in just te past 70 days… The government “Rations” me NINE pills per Month. ( Their decision is FINAL .)Help is available…if you qualify, if the medical necessary item is not too expensive, and if you can reach the right people. Then, they limit the access, under rate the disability, and if retired, they also subtract the benefit from the military pension.I tell you this, not for pity. but to explain what is not being done …while Americans believe that: “We’re doing all we can”. Veterans give up after awhile, and just stop asking for ( more paperwork, claims, hearings, trips across the state to a VA facility, counselling, appointments, tests, replacement documentation, having to ‘PROVE’ qualification, hiring attorneys, and out-of-pocket expenses ) that the VA calls: “Help”.
