PDF Editor FAQ

Have you ever had bank staff speak down to you in a condescending manner, until the manager saw & recognised you as a long time, valued customer? What happened next?

When I started university I had won a $1000/year scholarship that was being administered by one of the local banks. I grew up in a town of 8000 people, and everybody knew everybody. My dad was a grocer and city council member for years, so - while we weren’t wealthy by any means - everybody really knew us.The people at the bank knew me, also. I had been a paperboy for four years from around ages 10–14 and that bank was where we paid our bills each Saturday. Every Saturday morning for four years I would be there at 9AM when the bank opened and pay my bill with exact change. I would find out later that I was apparently the only carrier in town who didn’t just dump the entire haul on the bank and wait for a refund of the overage. (I’ll include a funny side-story at the bottom related to this)And, lastly, I also had a safe deposit box at the bank which I had maintained since around age 11.But I didn’t know Jack.Thankfully, mom did.I went in one morning to pick up the scholarship check so I could go start paying for university. The rest of it was on student loans. The woman who handled the whole thing wouldn’t give me a check until I had proof that I was paying for school. What we have here is known as a “chicken/egg problem”. I was going to pay with that check. She told me the story of some kid who’d gotten a scholarship like that, cashed the check, and skipped college and instead used it to vacation in Hawaii. So she wasn’t going to give me the check.I wasn’t quite sure how to handle this so I went home and mentioned it to the parents later that evening. My mom got pretty pissed, and the redneck side of her comes out when she’s pissed. But she actually kept it under control. She said “Don’t worry about it, I’ll call Jack.”See, she knew Jack. The bank president. She called him at home, talked for a few minutes, then told me “Go back and pick it up in the morning.”They had it ready for me in the morning. I rubbed it in a bit, and got the check. And poked my head in Jack’s office to thank him on the way out.Funny side story - these were the days of the Susan B. Anthony dollar, and those things were the size of quarters. I still can’t fathom how anyone didn’t see the problems that would cause.Since I always had my paper bill counted out exactly, the SBA dollars would cause a problem since they would go through the coin counter as a quarter. I had a couple of occasions of that happening. One in particular happened with this smarmy young male bank teller who was apparently glad that he’d finally seen my downfall. He took the bag of change back to the coin counter, then came back with this stupid smile and said “You’re 75 cents short.” I said “If a dollar coin got counted as a quarter, what would the difference be?” He said “Well, that would be 75 cents.”I said nothing and stared at him. After about 10 seconds the light bulb went on in his head.“Are you saying there was a dollar coin in there?”“You should go and see……”He went and found the dollar coin, and smile was gone.It actually happened with him one other time, and he came to tell me, caught himself mid-sentence, and went and found the dollar.

I have parent(s) who won’t allow me to get a job, learn to drive or give me any form of independence under their roof. I am 19, what does this tell you about my parents?

They are dominating, control freaks and you need to get out of there. Learn to drive?!?!?!?!? They've gone way past control freak. If you're in school…college, apply for a scholarship that includes housing. You're 19?!? You are legally an adult and can do as you please…unless you are financially dependent on them. If you are correct that now even if it's at Jack-in-the-box…Wendy's. Just get out and live your own life and get them a cat. No, a cat wouldn't put up with that sh**, get them a dog. No, on second thought, don't subject a dog to that life, dogs deserve n better.

What are the different types of jobs that can be done during college life?

The answer is “none.” But in order to have that job, you have to have done well enough in high school to earn a full ride scholarship. If kids in high school are letting their grades slip because they are working part time, they are really making a big mistake. If you take the time that a job in high school would take, and use it to improve your grades and participate in activities that look good to a scholarship committee, you will end up earning far more per hour than your friends who work at Jack in the box.If you have to get a real job in college, find one that will let you do your homework when the phone isn't ringing.
