How's the life in Cambridge?

Friday:9:10 AM:Buzz-Buzz-Buzz.I wake up. The 7 alarms on my phone ring to ensure that I do not accidentally sleep and miss my Computer Science lecture which starts at 10 AM. I have to be quick otherwise I would be late.I quickly wash myself, put on my clothes, check my e-mail and say hi to the housekeeper who comes every day to take the bins. I chat a little with her while drinking my tea.All of this takes approximately 45 minutes. I take a couple of apples and eat them while walking to my lecture.(Trinity Street, Cambridge. I eat my breakfast while walking on this road. I live nearby as well.)10:00 AM:I am at the lecture hall. I always sit at the front row because I find myself more concentrated there.I have hopefully already read the lecture notes of the upcoming lecture. Otherwise, I would have difficulty understanding the lecturer. If I didn’t, I skim the lecture notes quickly for 5 minutes before the lecture starts. It is usually enough to get me involved in the material.11:00 AM:The lecture finishes and I probably understood only the 70% of the material. At Cambridge, you have to do tons of work alone besides attending the lectures.I now have one hour left for my next lecture which starts at 12 PM. The one-hour gaps are really annoying because I can’t concentrate during this time and do deep work.Depending on the day, I might walk back to the college hall and eat lunch or simply drink coffee somewhere while reading the lecture notes of the next lecture.(hall of the Trinity College, University of Cambridge. At the middle of the hall is the picture of King Henry Vlll. The side walls show the renowned alumni of the college, including Isaac Newton.)12:00 PM:I again sit at the front row if there is free space for the Materials Science lecture. In this lecture, I understand the material relatively easy and might even allow myself to shut off for a moment, dreaming about my imaginary girlfriend or Game of Thrones.I understand most of the material after the lecture. Of course, I would need revision before doing the problem sheets.1:00 PM:I either go to the college hall to eat lunch or directly to my room. I take my physics practical or, in other words, experimental physics lecture notes along with my notebooks. I lie down for 15 minutes at most maybe drinking tea or listening to music (In other words, it’s my ARRIVAAAA time of the day!).At around 1:45 PM, I leave my room and cycle to Cavendish Laboratory, which is where our physics experiments are conducted.(Cavendish Laboratory, one of the most influential physics departments in the world.)2:00 PM:I take my lab-book and see what my demonstrator has marked. I usually make a couple of silly mistakes. I assess what I did wrong and, if I misunderstand anything, I ask the demonstrators. After I finish my traditional procedure of complaining about my mark, the professor talks 20–30 minutes about the experiment we are to conduct. He explains the main points and any subtleties that we might encounter.I meet my partner, with whom I am going to collaborate for three hours. We follow the instructions on the book and, if we have any questions, we ask the demonstrators.5:30 PM:At about this time, we finish the experiment and fill all the necessary points in our lab books. If we are still late, it probably means that we were lazy and didn’t do the experiment quickly.I get out from the lab and try to find my bike in the middle of darkness as the sun sets down at 5 PM at this time of year. I cycle to my college and have dinner at the hall at around 6 PM.I meet my friends and we chat a bit about the day. I am probably already tired enough to not be able to do anything of importance.6:30 PM:It’s my restaxation time! Many people choose to hang out with their friends and stroll the city. Some play sports or read a book in their rooms. I personally have different preferences depending on the day.(A happy couple in love. One of them is a bear called Henry. The other one is me.)I might sometimes play pool or video games with my friends. Other times, I would really hate to see someone’s face (except Henry’s!) and would prefer to re-watch episodes of Rick and Morty or the Big Bang Theory.Sometimes, I might not even get a rest. I would maybe code something easy in my friend’s room or discuss math and physics. During this time, I try not to spend too much energy.9:30 PM:At this time, I try reading and revising the lecture notes. I don’t solve the problem sheets at night because I am probably too tired to be effective. (My Mondays, Saturdays and Sundays are significantly less busier. I solve the problem sheets at those days, usually.)11:00 PM:I start my sleeping ritual which means eating juicy fruits and drinking tea. I would then check my e-mail and reply to the boring but necessary letters. I might chat a bit with my friends and family from Armenia if I am feeling homesick.12:30 AM:If my French neighbor doesn’t decide that midnight is a good time to sing and my brain is kind enough to shut down, I fall asleep. The next thing I know when I wake up are the 7 alarms which battle my desire to sleep until 2 PM.The schedule you see above has been adapted and adjusted to the one I feel the most productive. Coming from a place where I was, more or less, the one deciding how I study the material, adapting to the Cambridge system has been quite difficult.During the first two weeks, I had difficulty understanding the lectures. I was always a textbook-person and liked reading new material rather than listening to it. However, I soon found out (at the expense of my sanity) that the Cambridge pace is fast, fast, fast, fast, fast! You simply cannot afford to go into detail in everything. Thus, I started paying attention how I can concentrate during the lectures and get the most out of it.The biggest difference for me was reading the lecture notes before the lectures. I found out that, when I listen to the lecture and I don’t know what it is about or why I have to learn it, I automatically lose my concentration. 5 minutes, although ideally 10–15 minutes, is enough to make a huge difference between my understanding the lecture or 2-hours of catching up after every lecture. Moreover, at the first few weeks, I would come home and, instead of getting rest, I would go crazy and study even when I was tired. At one point, I studied until 11 PM at my friend’s room, doing approximately two lecture notes and two problem sheets. When I got home, my extremely sore throat was loudly screaming at me.After that, I had a flu for about two weeks. I learned that getting rest is one of the most important activities you have to pay attention to.Yes, Cambridge is challenging. But I love challenges.P.S.You won’t believe me but I forgot to mention that I have bathroom breaks during the day! I always do…

What has been your paper attempting strategy?

Correct paper attempting strategy in competitive exams like NEET and JEE matters a lot. An apt strategy can increase your marks by atleast 50-60 marks. I tried many strategies and finally found out the following strategy to be the perfect one for me.NEET exam begins at 2 PM. The invigilator allows you to take out the OMR sheet 15 min prior the start of the examination. In this 15 min, you need to fill your details such as Roll no, centre code, Paper code, name etc on the OMR sheet. Do take your time and fill them very carefully, afterall all your efforts over the past few years depend on that single piece of OMR sheet. At sharp 2 PM, the invigilator allows you to open the NEET question paper. First of all do check whether all the pages are properly printed or not.I used to start with bio section first then chemistry and finally physics. This used to give me ample amount of time for Physics at the end. After solving each subject, I used to fill the OMR sheet at that time only.Filling the entire OMR sheet with 180 questions at the end will increase the chances of doing mistakes while filling the OMR sheet. This is because, by the end of the exam your mind will be fully tired solving questions and at the same time, you will be under a lot of pressure to fill the OMR all at once. It may also happen that due to shortage of time, you may fail to fill all the bubbles. So do fill the OMR as soon as you complete a subject.35-40 min are sufficient to solve entire 90 questions of biology. 6-7 min for filling the OMR of biology section. Total 45 min for biology at Max.After bio, I used to solve chemistry. 45 min for chemistry. 3-4 min for filling OMR.Now I used to be left with about 85-90 min for Physcis.Out of which, I used to devote around 75 min in solving Physics(My physics was a bit on a weaker side😅) and again 3-4 min for filling OMR.About 10 mins are now left in your hand. Out of which 5 min will be taken by the invigilator for attendance. Style of taking attendance is very annoying. Once they would come and take your signature and thumb impression after matching your details, then again they would come back and ask you to paste your photograph on the attendance sheet. At last, they would again disturb you for the third time when a videographer comes and asks you to look into the camera while he records your video while giving exam. Trust me all these things are very annoying and breaks your rhythm multiple times while giving the exam.Tip:- Keep drinking water at regular intervals while giving exam. This will keep you calm & composed and will eventually increase your accuracy.I don't recommend filling the OMR bubble after solving each question. This breaks your rhythm and rhythm is very imp in the exam.If you get stuck in a question then do have the courage to leave that question for the time being and solve it at the end. Don't give more than 90 sec to a question. In biology, either you know the answer or you don't. So pls don't waste time over such questions regarding whom you are not sure enough.See, without solving atleast 150 questions with confidence, you can't be sure of your selection(talking about GEN/OBC category). Hence if you have solved less than 150 questions then do consider using hit & trial method(tuukka lagana😂) for rest of the questions.I do agree that the amount of time required for solving all the questions of a particular subject depends largely on the difficulty level. Here I have only tried to mention the time required to solve a paper with moderate difficulty, as is the NEET exam.Solving Physics at the end will provide you peace of mind and would reduce the chances of committing silly mistakes.Consider following me Pratik KashyapThanks.

How is the one day life of an IT employee in major cities?

I worked with Accenture for two years between 2016 and 2018. I was operating from Gurgaon. So, I am sharing my usual daily routine during that period.Morning:Usually, I would wake up at 6 AM and start studying for the CAT exam. I would study for around 4–5 hours till 12 PM with a break in between for the breakfast. These were my most productive hours of the day filled with a sense of excitement and fulfilment.Afternoon:I would leave for the office at around 12:30 PM. Till 9:30 PM, I would struggle there.1 PM - 1:30 PM → Check mails and reply to the mails if required1:30 PM - 2:30 PM → Lunch2:30 PM - 4:30 PM → Work on client’s issues and take calls with users4:30 PM - 5:30 PM → Snacks breakThe general shift ends at 5:30 PM. I was working in the European shift.5:30 PM - 7:00 PM → Find some empty place on any floor and study for CAT7:00 PM - 9:00 PM → Work on issues if there is any, chit-chat, and gossip with colleagues and read the news.9:00 PM - 9:30 PM → Show more work than I have done. Show 4–5 hours of work as 9 hours of work on the excel sheet. Probably, the most challenging task.Yes, my priority was my CAT preparation!Night:I would return from Office at 10 PM, take my dinner, talk to my family over the phone, and chit-chat with my friends who were also in the same company. Most of the time, we would end up venting our frustration with some office things or the other. Finally, I would call it a day at around 11:30 PM to ensure that I wake up on time to resume my CAT preparation the next morning.
