As the customer, you pay for ONLY the materials needed to do the job. Having extra materials around saves time if something is warped, or otherwise defective as opposed to driving to get a replacement. It is EXTREMELY common for us (contractors) to order more than we need, for various reasons. It is also completely impossible to know exactly how many 2 x 4s or sheets of drywall will go into a new home, for example. Yes, we can get very close if we choose to, but why bother?So let me ask you two questions:If we run short, will you pay us for the labor to get the extra materials and the cost of them? If not, then let us order what we want since it’s OUR responsibility.When you go to Firestone and pay for (4) new tires, does that entitle you to having every new tire in the whole damn store ? No ? Why not ? You ordered four, but they have 288 in stock. Why aren’t they all yours ??I’ve had to deal with this ridiculously stupid question about a dozen times in 40 years of construction. There is a pecking order of fear, loathing, and respect (or disgust) depending on the criminal's particular charges and convictions.While this answer mostly applies to the NY state prison system, it is probable that this would be a common experience in any long term setting of incarceration (state and federal prisons with prisoners serving terms of two or more years).It can apply to holding facilities like city lockups and county jails to a degree, but much less so since the typical inmates of those facilities are rarely held for more than a year, and usually seldom more than a few months while awaiting trial or disposition of their cases, or serving time for misdemeanor offenses. Given the fluidity of the populations over time in municipal/county jails, there's less time for this pecking order to sort itself out.At the top of the pecking order would be celebrity convicts (if they are in the general population for some reason, and not in protective custody), made men in the Mafia, professional thieves/armed robbers, weapons traffickers, contract killers and murderers, and more so in Federal prisons - white collar criminals. Also commanding a fair amount of respect are often these men will be “old heads” or O.G. - “old gangster”. These men are the ones who call the shots and that unassuming late middle aged man who looks at you with a certain kind of honed intensity possessed of that eagle-eyed, steel hard bearing, that keen alertness and intelligence would be very likely to put some cocky thug down in a way that will hurt for years to come. He will probably have a lithe or hard muscular build with a confident way of moving (one of confidence and determined purpose, and not mere swagger) which suggests that he can snap you in half without exerting his full effort, and he will very likely have a following of other inmates that will be going out of their way to oblige his suggestion that you should have a unlucky moment if you cross him. While these men may be leaders within a street gang, or made men in an organized crime family, they need not be; they have risen through the grimy ranks of prison and earned their respect just for surviving. The oldest of these kinds of convicts may also be less intense, but still command the sort of respect accorded to the honored elders.Next are the porters (also called trustees), who have through observed good behavior or other merit have earned the privilege of having a jail job. Especially make a point to be on good terms with them, particularly the chow and supply porters who will run kites over to the parts of the facility that you cannot run a fishing line to move goods or letters to easily… also they may be able to get things for you that make life a little easier (such as foil sheets recovered from the kitchen which can be made into igniter then used to create a short in an electric socket to light a wick of twisted up toilet paper for lighting rollies - hand rolled cigarettes - when you've run out of matches).Similar to the porters are the law library assistants, some of whom may be actual legal professionals (most aren't, but more than a few earned their paralegal license or are very knowledgeable of the basics of framing legal motions and petitions)… and can be helpful with filing grievances against the facility.Next are the common run of felons such as drug dealers/traffickers or people with significant drug possession charges, and non-professional thieves (home burglars, car thieves, and break-ins) and lesser violent offenders (aggravated assault and battery to lesser assault charges).Next are the “first time felons” who were not so lucky as to get a plea deal or judicial diversion/drug court or some other sort of leniency so as to avoid a prison sentence. Typically these offenders are non-violent offenders in for drug possession, DUI, or some other offense that has a term of over a year but less than five years. These guys tend to be the ones that want to do their bids with an eye toward staying out of trouble with both staff and the longer term/gang affiliated offenders. They are also likely to become “programmers”, which are sort of the nerds of prison - people who want to use this opportunity to turn their lives around and get clean/sober, go to school (finish their GED or even take college courses) or learn a trade. In New York, the NCCER (National Center for Construction Education and Research) has a partnership with the Department of Corrections to assist inmates with gaining training in construction trades. Often this dovetails with inmates who get porter jobs while inside.That being said, these less serious offenders will likely find themselves tested or “tried” by some of the older more hardened convicts (or younger convicts hoping to make a reputation for themselves). There’s only so much that can be done about this sort of thing: When possible, defuse and distance yourself from a situation that looks like it will go south.But some inmates will fuck with you just to see whether or not you're a pussy, or if you'll stand your ground.My advice is to keep quiet, never rat/snitch, and don't gamble or take favors. If you aren't gang affiliated, stay that way. It's not worth the bother to get to use the gang dedicated phone or weight stack in the yard. But if you're not given a way to avoid a fight, then be ready to go all-in. You'll probably catch a ticket regardless of the right-or-wrong and you'll get a two week or possibly a month long stay in the box or SHU (special housing unit) - though if you aren't the aggressor, you can make a case for administrative leniency.Either way, when the fists and feet start flying, go all in. Even if you get your ass handed to you, it's better to eat a fist and get box time and along with it, respect for owning your shit like a man - than to be thought an easy mark and a victim.At the end of the day, people are always watching you and judging between your words and your actions.Now we come to the bottom of the prison pecking order: rats/snitches, men who beat their wives or kids, rapoes (rapists), and the lowest of the low, peods (pedophiles). The smart or knowing sex offender will seek to be placed into protective custody, which is basically a section of a prison set aside for creeps like these: like I said, it’s a pecking order in a world where people tend to think “I was this bad, but not bad like that guy”… and in the general population, the rapoes and pedos tend to have lots of unfortunate accidents and fights.And presumably, bad cops that caught charges - but I never saw any nor heard of any circulating in the general population.
