IRPS and IRAS are both largely office based jobs with free weekend. Working hours are generally 9 to 6 and thus good work life balance. Every job can sometimes become stressful and so is the case with IRAS and IRPS but overall better balance vis a vis those working in operating or engineering departments of Indian Railways.IRPS has to manage industrial relations in Railways however it rarely turns stressful as Railways is an model employer and has unparalleled welfare orientation. Moreover As a service IRPS gets an opportunity to oversee schools, hospitals, colonies, holiday homes and what not. The career hence has diverse work roles along with the core work of managing HR.

Until recently, all sonar consoles, starting with the ancient analog ones, were marked with a white grease pencil, to keep track of contacts, weather (rain squalls), “biologics” (whales, porpoise, shrimp), and such.The reason is a shortage of trackers. A tracker is an electronic feature that will stay on a designated noise, following it as it moves.The old analog systems had one, which was also the only search beam, so the search display was marked with either the contact number (1, 35, whatever) or things like bio, rain, etc.. These were the BQR-2, BQR-7, BQS-6, etc..The first digital systems were also limited. For example, the BQR-21 (BQR-2 replacement had one analog and two (? or was it four?) digital trackers. The BQQ-6 had two half-beam trackers for the spherical array, two for the towed array, and four full-beam “IRP” trackers on the spherical array, and four narrowband trackers.So, if you were watching more than a hand-full (common, if you’re in a shipping lane), you had to use a marker. When it moved, you used toilet paper to erase it. Every once in a while, you squirted glass cleaner on it to eliminate the smears (and the CO’s fingerprints, as one person said LOL).These were all hardware limitations. The new sonar systems have far greater processing power, I’m sure they can electronically track more. It’s also probably classified. But, I seem to recall a video of the consoles on a Virginia-class, and there was a roll of TP there, too.
