I just finished helping out with an Eagle Scout Service Project!In Boy Scouts, the Eagle project is usually the final capstone requirement for an individual to receive his Eagle Scout Rank. It requires a significant amount of effort on his part.Before carrying out the project itself, the Scout must fundraise, document the materials, record the expenses, submit the letter of recommendations, and secure the location and approvals. The process and paperwork can take months or up to a year in some cases!For today’s service project, we erected a stone prayer labyrinth to facilitate prayer, meditation, spiritual transformation, and global unity. It also serves as a memorial to a local church member who recently passed away. Well, there’s a number of drum/song styles that fall under this broad Native American term. A lot of this tradition is not really open to non-Natives. Or, it’s rather rare, let’s say.Powwow-style drumming is probably your best bet. But, this is mostly on a large drum and requires a group. Or, perhaps, you could include some hand drum styles too - usually, sung in round dance style.It’s very hard to sit in on a legit Native drum. Or, put it this way: joining a Native American drum group without having a solid connection to the community or the families that are associated with the drum itself is impossible.Do you have Native friends that are drummers, that are open to non-Natives sitting in?Another group that sing this style is Order of the Arrow Boy Scouts. This is not well-regarded by most Natives (although, this isn’t a universal thing either). And I’m also not sure how easy it is to become associated with these drums. Usually, their singing/drumming is rather poor.For example, here…check out this difference.Native drum (Young Spirit):Compare that to the Boy Scouts/Order of the Arrow drumming:Then, there are Hobbyists who tend to draw heavily from the OA population. These are non-Natives that participate in powwow culture. In fact, it’s made up heavily of men that came through the OA system. They are older now, but still want to participate in powwow activities. To their credit they usually don’t claim to be Native.And finally, there are so-called wannabes also frequently trying to set up their own drums. These individuals are different than hobbysists, in that they claim some Native identity, but their connections are either extremely tenuous or they link to completely bogus Native American “tribes.” They probably do the worst versions of Native drumming/singing. They mostly listen to recordings of legit Native drums, and try to imitate the songs. Or, some just make shit up. In any event, they tend to do a piss-poor job.Here’s an example of this sort of group powwow singing and dancing (fake “Shawnee” in Ohio):Probably your best bet is to learn some round dance songs.
