Now that the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) filed for bankruptcy, was it a mistake in taking away their ability of background screening troop leader applicants?

Now that the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) filed for bankruptcy, was it a mistake in taking away their ability of background screening troop leader applicants?Well, I only managed to get part way through that hate-filled bit if drivel you quoted before the level of bullshit in the story was higher than my boots, but here's a suggestion: Use actual news sources when making accusations. You won't look so much like a fool.Better yet, know something about the organization you-re making your false accusations against.BSA does background checks on adults involved in Scouting - paid employees, volunteers, and people working on occasional events, such as Merit Badge Counselors. For at least the last 15-20 years, all new adult registrations required a background check. The check was done before the adult application was approved.Since last year, ALL registered adults must agree to new background checks AND random checks. We were not allowed to re-register without signing the authorization. People who have been involved in Scouting for 20–30–50 years or more will be background-checked.And that's fine with us. No one has objected. No one has refused to sign the authorization. No one has threatened to sue over this.

Have you ever had to assume the role of being a mandated reporter? What exactly is a mandated reporter?

Mandated reporting is simply a requirement that if a person suspects the abuse of a child, you are mandated to report that abuse to the police.I work with kids. I am or have been, both a Boy Scout leader and a manager of a soccer team for our club. Both organizations have put policies in place for mandatory reporting. So far, I have not had to report any incidents of abuse, but that hasn’t lessened my role as a mandatory reporter. Do you see the difference?I assume the role of a mandatory reporter in EVERY interaction I have with a member of the team or Troop. The difference is that I have to be on constant alert for inappropriate interaction with children. That I haven’t had to report says a lot about the seriousness we hold for keeping children safe. While both groups take the matter seriously and have required me to participate in hours of training on the matter, I want to address this question as a Boy Scout leader as we have received a lot of press lately about incidents of abuse spanning decades.I was a Boy Scout in the 1970s and 1980s. In that time, I was never harmed by one of our leaders. I am not aware of any of my Troop being harmed, but it wasn’t something that I thought about as a boy. If there were protection policies in place, I was not aware of them. I don’t believe that there were. Maybe I was just lucky that the guys who served as our leaders were all good men and treated us with respect. This was the era from which many of the current complaints are being made.Fast forward now to my time with Scouting as an adult. Now, you can’t hold any position with our Troop without submitting an adult application that requires a basic background check. Then, you are required to take YPT (Youth Protection Training) every two years. My Troop requires all adults to retake YPT EVERY YEAR.YPT has been revised almost every year to include more and more training and as girls have been admitted to the organization, their needs have been included in YPT as well. YPT emphasizes ZERO one-on-one contact with any Scouting participant. We practice “two-deep leadership” where if one Scout needs to be escorted somewhere, two leaders must do so. My Troop is so practiced at this I simply have to hold up two fingers and ask a dad to join me and that dad will jump up and be a second adult practicing this important safety measure.A simple question, “Mr. Potts, can I get a cooler out of the Troop Trailer?” means I need to engage a second adult as I walk with that Scout to unlock our equipment trailer. Using these practices limits the possibility of a Scout being targeted for abuse as no Scout is ever in a one-on-one situation with an adult/leader. We (our Troop) won’t even allow an untrained adult to drive a car of Scouts to an event. Everyone gets trained. Everyone must adhere to these practices.I and my son are fortunate to be engaged with a Troop that takes this seriously, but I believe that all Troops have to take this seriously. I trust the leaders in our Troop and appreciate all of the things they have taught my son as I hope they appreciate the things I’ve been able to teach theirs. Collectively, we are building the next generation of community leaders and we want them to succeed in an environment that doesn’t jeopardize that future.Have there been problems in the past? Yes. Absolutely. Scouts BSA is reckoning with that past as we speak. When my son’s generation looks back on their Scouting experience, it is my sincere hope that the practices that are in place today protected them from any instances of abuse.I’ve been with our Troop for six years. In that time, I have never been alone with a single Scout and believe that through these practices, none of our Scouts have been placed in danger. Our Troop is now the largest Troop in our Scouting District, and we are hearing that we may be the largest in the Grand Canyon Council of Arizona. We are large because we are delivering Scouting in a safe and secure environment and we are trusted. That trust can never be abused or placed at risk.As a leader, I’m proud of our Troop. I’m proud of our Scouts. I’m proud of the men and women who work tirelessly to deliver a safe and educational Scouting program to 65 active Scouts.I believe in YPT. I believe that if we could look down the road many years, we would find that Scouts BSA remedied the problems of the past and that no child was harmed after these practices were put into place. That may be wishful thinking for an organization as large as we are, but I’m confident in my Troop. I’m proud to be a part of delivering a safe Scouting program to so many fine young men. Thanks for the A2A.

Can I be kicked out of Boy Scouts for being an atheist?

I’m assuming you’re talking about the Boy Scouts of America organization in the U.S., not some other scouting group? If that’s the case, then when you join the Boy Scouts, your parents sign an application that includes something called the “Declaration of Religious Principle” that describes the BSA’s view. You as a youth in order to join have to take and agree to live by the Scout Oath, where you promise to “Do your duty to God”.One question to ask yourself as an atheist is why you would want to be a member of an organization that has as its central tenets ideas of Duty to God and Religious Principles. Mostly in the BSA this falls to your own personal integrity.Nobody in the BSA is interested in “kicking kids out”. We’re all interested in helping kids learn and grow. Even the most faithful religious people question their beliefs from time to time, and young people who are learning can and should question lots of things and try out different ideas. Generally speaking the organizations and adults that run Boy Scout troops are going to be pretty welcoming and understanding. Not all of them, as there are some very religious troops, but most. If, however, you choose the angry atheist / evangelist route and your behavior becomes disruptive, or you decide to throw down the gauntlet at some point, then that’s a different matter. People have been dropped from the BSA (or denied membership) for being atheist in that way. It’s still very rare, but it does happen. If you go along, are respectful, and treat the occasional religious stuff the way you’d treat going to a friend’s wedding in a church, then you’ll likely find people treat you with respect as well.
