This lies within a protected wilderness area with the most daunting of names, the River of No Return Wilderness. From the nearest unpaved road, it’s a treacherous 75-mile hike on the Idaho Centennial Trail, and then a near-impossible 7.12-mile walk off trail to the peak. There aren’t even pictures of this place on Google Images, but below is a shot of the wilderness area.The catch: If unmarked trails are allowed, there is technically an unpaved road that dead ends only 3 miles away from Bismark Mountain. In fact, that happens to be the farthest vehicular road from anywhere Google Street View has ever filmed in the 48 states. There is no official trail to the mountain peak, and that 3-mile hike would be ill-advised, dangerous, and fraught with wolves and coyotes. But technically you could get there walking 3 miles from your car after a harrowing and painstaking half-day drive on a gravel road.But it’s still a strong candidate because sticking to marked trails, this area is frequently noted as the most remote place in the 48 states. You can be the judge if that single, unpaved road and shortcut disqualifies this place as the most remote.Candidate #3) 48.989701 N, 121.235283 WThe location: Silver Lake in Washington. After a 22.2-mile hike to nowhere on marked trails, you’re still 6.53 miles as the crow flies off the trail from the north side of Silver Lake. That extra walk will take a lot of zigzagging up and down steep mountains and you’ll walk a lot longer than 6 miles! The lake is near the Canadian border within Washington state’s North Cascades National Park. The last time I hiked through here, I was stalked by a hungry mountain lion! Terrifying! But it’s absolutely one of the most gorgeous places in America, and few people will ever see it!The catch: It’s only 6 miles from a remote road in Canada, so it’s up to you if this point is considered more remote than the one in Wyoming or Idaho. In defense (or defence) of this point, it’s illegal to walk across the American-Canadian border here.
