Maybe there are some quant trading firms who dig into actual implementation details, but there’s really not much to be learned that you can’t pick up in the fuzzy-wuzzy parts of the call — if the lack of a build pipeline is slowing Microsoft’s product delivery, it’s going to show up in delayed timelines for product delivery.That said, it would be pretty funny to watch Satya mess with the analysts on these calls:Analyst: “So Satya, what’s causing the delay in the Office 365 update? Do you see the delivery delays persisting past Q2 and impacting upgrade cycles?”Satya: “Oh, so we were having a bitch of a time scaling Jenkins past 200 nodes, but it turns out we had just messed up ulimits on the master node, and the transient failures cleared up when we bumped nproc to 65k.”“?????????”“Yep, everything is on track for Q2”“Great”Sadly, we live in a boring, mature, responsible world where investors only care about gross margin, and CEOs will only answer in finance-y platitudes.

The Siemens MicroMaster 6SE31/32 range controls the speed of an AC motor.To provide the power, it has hardware to generate a high power DC supply, which is then chopped into a variable frequency variable amplitude sine wave using IGBT switching transistors.The vector drives tracked the torque/slip graph to adjust the phases of the motor voltage to precisely control torque in a servo loop.The software that did the real time vector control was one large module.The application facing software was another 25000 lines of C. And cost a fortune in chips and assembly.Doing as much as you can in software simply is inescapable. It’s the economics of volume manufacturing.You pay me once to replace the cost of 100 ICs, their inventory control, supply chain and fitting. You save all that on every unit.As I left, the production line was nearing its one millionth unit.That’s a lot of savings.
