The bike itself, as others have said, is not all that. Carbon fibre is common, aero is common, hidden cables aren’t that rare, etc. Brake placement is interesting as they give up mechanical advantage for aero according to their pitch, but meh.The part that actually perked up my ears was that they involved frog design in their work. That’s a sophisticated play well above the level of most Kickstarter campaigns. Frog does good work on product and branding. This elevates this group from a new bike firm to a cool product brand, at least aspirationally.Their choices of focus are interesting as well. Seamless integration of electronics into toys is a good crossover for a lot of consumers.If I had to position the demographic they are going after, it’s the affluent aspirational athlete. As such, it’s an aspirational brand like Adidas, not a hard core cycling brand per se. They are looking for the mass market of people with lots of disposable income with limited interest in being cycling gear heads.This bike certainly isn’t something I can see any of my past or present bike nut friends shelling out money for. It’s not for hard core cyclists. It’s for people who want a sexy bike to ride charity road tours one. Think Toronto’s 50 km Ride for Heart.I would expect that people who bought this would also love to have SpeedX brand lycra, shoes, water bottles, energy bars, etc. That’s where I think this is going.The challenge, however, is that lifestyle aspirational brands require a pyramid with extraordinarily good athletes at the top being completely amazing while wearing and using the gear. Adidas sponsors top athletes who wear their gear while playing basketball and the like. Nike ditto. Just Do It as a motto works when there are levels of the pyramid of accomplishment you aspire to and icons in them who are using the gear you have on.SpeedX is missing this, apparently intentionally given their selection of frog design. They’ve chosen a different route. Maybe they are going to go left from that model into being a mass manufacturer of multiple types of athletic products which are unrelated. I could readily see an electric skateboard from them, a motorcycle helmet with integrated HUD, and similar types of embedded electronic sporting gear.Another interesting element is their claim of single-photo automatic sizing. If that’s true and they have good IP behind that, they could use that for a lot of online purchasing. Certainly they have a return policy which is online sales friendly. They could extend that capability to clothes, skis, shoes, etc. It’s not particularly common. It’s also unclear how good their tech in this case is, because they make the claim then provide a complete sizing chart and scheme for self-sizing.They also claim to be a team of 56 hardcore cycling heads, but I don’t really see that. This isn’t a group of hardcore competitive cyclists who said “Hey, lets build the best bike in the world!”. The electronics, the manufacturing depth (apparently), the use of frog design, the mission statement of being a brand: these things signify a reasonably well-funded startup that wants to go big. Not that they can’t be both, but I just don’t see it.
