What Federal land would you move to state control?

I’ve been asked to answer this question. This is not a particularly important issue for me, but I do have a general opinion — which I’m very open to education and argument on. If the Congress of Quora convened and this were the issue before us, what follows is what I’d propose. Here’s a map of all Federally-owned land:As you can see, there’s a LOT of Federally-owned land in the United States west of the Rocky Mountains. I don’t see any reason that the amount of Federally controlled land in the West shouldn’t look more like the amount of Federally controlled land in the East. I have a general bias — where possible , practical, and sensible — toward subsidiarity and local control.Let’s get Department of Defense land (blue on the map) out of the way. National defense is a core Federal function. While worth reviewing to see if anything can be turned over, we already have the Base Realignment and Closure process for that. Let the holdings and processes stand as they are.The main set of Federal land I’m interested in handing over to state control is the more than 247.3 million acres (1,001,000 square kilometers) that is administered by the Bureau of Land Management (yellow on the map). Let the states fight with ranchers about grazing rights and deal with the trade-offs of mineral extraction rights. If there’s a way to auction the BLM land off to private ownership in a fashion that’s subject to state regulation after transfer and the revenue from the auction of assets goes to paying down the national debt (and stopping the borrowing from Social Security funds), I’d be even more interested.I feel significantly more protective of the land controlled by the Forest Service (light green on the map). Maybe it’s because I’ve read The Lorax to my five year old daughter three times in the past five days, but I see trees as a national strategic asset in service of breathable air and climate change mitigation. Given the global scope of the challenges, the economic implications, and the national security implications, I think there’s a much better case for ongoing Federal administration. The Bureau of Indian (that is, Native American or Indigenous Peoples) Affairs (red on the map; don’t look at me that way fellow Lefties — I didn’t pick the colors) is a wholly different discussion. To be clear: the reservation land gets left intact as largely self-governing, sovereign entities. I’m rather underinformed in terms of the history of laws, treaties, and policy in this domain, so my instinct is to leave the entire matter alone. One thing I’m compelled to wonder about, though, is whether it makes any sense to explore converting the reservations — at least the largest ones — into their own stand-alone U.S. states, complete with Congressional representation and the rights afforded by statehood. The reservations are already self-governing, so the hurdles in Section 3 of Article IV of the Constitution wouldn’t be an insurmountable obstacle. That said, there could be any number of good reasons not to — not least of which might be Indigenous Peoples not being interested in engaging with the institutions of government that killed their ancestors and drove them off the land they occupied prior to European colonization in any fashion but the treaties in place. So, yeah… likely leave the whole category alone. The Fish and Wildlife Service (orange on the map), I’m mostly in favor of leaving alone on principle (human beings aren’t the only creatures inhabiting this planet)… but there is a big, huge, someone-may-revoke-my-Liberal-card asterisk: Alaska. I’m rather tired of fighting about the Arctic National Wildlife Reguge (ANWR) and the other vast swaths mostly set aside in the 1970s and 1980s. My first priority would be protecting the established and settled land claims for the Inuits (which seem to be managed differently than other Indigenous Peoples). Some land might get turned over to the Forest Service. If some additional National Parks need to brought into the National Park System, let’s do that on a limited basis. Beyond that, the FWS controls comparatively small amounts of land in the Lower 48, so why so much up there? Alaskans seem quite committed to preserving a wilderness-focused style of life, and I’m content to let them do that. I don’t live there.I’d leave the National Parks (dark green) under Federal control. A big part of that is for the same reasons that I’d leave Forest Service land — which surrounds many National Parks — alone. Furthermore, despite their prominence in such discussions due their familiarity, they don’t actually constitute that much land. I also have to imagine that states are mostly content to have the National Park branding as a tourist draw, since whole local economies now exist around them. I’ve been to quite a few of them in my life, each with their sights to behold. My default stance is to preserve them.

Why is Disney+ struggling?

It doesn’t have enough original content. People don’t wanna wait until August for Marvel’s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. We need more revivals. If shows like Girl Meets World, Andi Mack, or Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger were to come back, that would be awesome. The latter would fit in perfectly with FWS and WandaVision, especially if Mister Negative as the villain brings Spider—Man and Black Cat into the MCU TV world. And yes, I know Andi Mack just ended and Buffy and Jonah have moved on, but Andi doesn’t need them. As much as I loved Buffy, I felt cheated when she didn’t actually move in season 3. We need the new-school Andi, with new characters, but keeping Cyrus in the main cast. I loved Cyrus.
