PDF Editor FAQ

Should it be easier for people to legally change genders?

Thank you for your A2A…I can’t speak for everyone on this subject simply because requirements vary from state to state in the USA.I don’t necessarily think that it is to burdensome simply because it is a big decision to transition and shouldn’t be taken lightly. This is why the World Health Association for Transgender Health, WPATH, has a requirement that you live full time as your gender identity before you can have gender conformation surgery, GCS.Most of my legal difficulty came from changing my name. Which I didn’t start for about 3 months into my transition. I wanted to make sure I could follow through with my decision to transition. Just because you know your are transgender doesn’t mean you can live as your gender identity. Many transgender people can’t handle the loss and social difficulties they have to face. When I applied for a legal name change I had to wait for about 2 months for a court date. In the state of Nebraska you submit an application for legal name change and they set a court date about 6 weeks out. The reason for this is you have to go to the local newspaper and have them run a public notice of your request for a legal name change for (4) consecutive weeks. Once this is completed the newspaper sends a letter to the court notifying the judge that you completed this requirement. Then when the court day come up you appear before the judge and he just asked you why you are changing your name.Once I got my name changed my first major document change was my driver license. By now I was 5 month into hormone therapy and my doctor provided me a certified letter of gender change. They usually wait until you have been on HRT for around 4 months to ensure you are following through with your decision. By now you are already experiencing a lot of permanent physical changes.I took both documents to the department of motor vehicles and was issued a new driver’s license with my new name and new gender marker. Now the leg work really begins. If you are like me there is a lot of things to change. Passport, bank accounts, credit cards, school transcripts, insurance, and social security just to name a few.The only document I couldn’t legally change was my birth certificate, which required a letter from a surgeon that I had my gender conformation surgery. Having your birth certificate change is really not that critical. I had a new passport issued using my old birth certificate and a copy of my legal name change along with my gender change letter from my doctor.I still got my birth certificate changed about 6 months after my GCS. This was a little difficult because my birth certificate was issued in a state that I was not resident. In Nebraska I just had to show my surgeon’s letter and they would issue me a new birth certificate. But in my birth state they required a court order along with you surgeon’s letter. So I had to revise my legal name change document to add my gender change which required my surgeon’s letter for verification and send it to my birth state. Wow, what a hassle. Just waiting for a birth certificate change took a long time because they had so much work backlog. Ugh.But they finally sent me a brand new birth certificate, suitable for framing. Which is about all I have used it for. Lol.

Are DMV employees usually rude?

Usually? No. But let’s define “rude”.Friday, I processed an applicant who had moved to Nebraska from another state. Our state law requires you to present a birth certificate or a valid passport to begin the process. I told her that and she presented me a social security card.I slid it back across the desk to her and asked her to put it away so she didn’t lose it. I asked her again about a BC/Passport and she insisted on giving me the SS card again.I explained Nebraska regulations to her and she said well it wasn’t on the website. It actually is and I have copies of that page to hand out in advance because this happens a lot. I showed her.She demanded “talk to someone” who could help her. I told her no one on this level in this building can change statute or law and offered her the number to the home offices in the capitol and also suggested she could contact her state senator. She became enraged and called me an “ignorant rude MF-er”. This was a well dressed woman, wearing 10k worth of jewelry. She was articulate and coherent. Now, was I rude? Part of my job is telling people no. It sucks. Its uncomfortable, especially when it’s a situation where someone needs an to start a job or cash a check. If saying no and not negotiating is rude, then yes, DMV employees are rude. The thing is, no one ever calls us rude when they have what they need and get what they want. Are there INDIVIDUALS that relish having a modicum of control so they can flex and treat people badly? Sure. They exist at the DMV. They exist everywhere. So to sum up. Can the DMV be an unpleasant place? Sure. But the lady from yesterday is telling everyone how rude I was to her. I doubt she is telling the whole story. Either way she is wrong. It’s not retail. It’s not Burger King. You can’t have it your way. That’s not rude. It’s just fact. The vast majority of people who come through are well prepared and leave happy. They just don’t go around freaking out and making up hyperbolic stories about it.Call ahead. Ask questions. We are there to help. Truly. I’m proud of what I do. It’s my public service.

What are the biggest red flags colleges look for in applicants?

Lying on the applicants form. You wouldn't think it possible to feel the necessity to nominate a school you did not attend or an activity in which you did not participate but it happens. And those are the egregious, stupid ones. Many feel that admissions people will accept without verifying certain information and, sometimes, that's true. Meeting the applicant can trigger red flags; In one case a potential student claimed to be from a foreign country to conceal really terrible grades in English. On meeting him, a birth certificate was asked for and....there is a difference between Gothenburg, Sweden and Gothenburg, Nebraska. It may not have occurred to those seeking admission but....if they'll lie about the details of their personal life, would they cheat? Use unscrupulous methods during their on campus career? Admissions exists not only to ascertain if the person and the school are a good 'fit' but to protect the school and other students from a hazardous person they could not have expected to know of.

I like what it allows you to do and the overall setup of the software. I like that you can prepare the document just as you'd like so there's no question about what needs to be filled out. I also like the different fonts to choose from.
