St. Petersburg Times did an article on a Canadian Doctor that had worked in St. Petersburg, Florida. She had shut down her Florida office and re-opened her Canadian practice. In Canada she had one receptionist who also did her billing. In Florida she allegedly had five staff members whose sole responsibility was hounding insurance companies and patients for payment for services rendered. Increased liability insurance, billing costs and uncollected payments ate up a huge chunk of the better pay you refer to.edit: As was pointed out in the comments, another responsibility of the Florida staff was trying to justify why a procedure was necessary and getting the insurance company to agree that it would in fact be covered.
