PDF Editor FAQ

Fuel Efficiency: Should you turn off the car's engine at a red light when you stop for very short time?

The decision to switch off the engine is a trade-off between saving fuel for idling and saving fuel to charge the batteries drained due to re-start + fuel enrichment at end of carnking (EoC).Let's start with idle fuel. As Andrew Qian said, idle fuel consumption is ~ 0.1 gal/hr/litre of displacement. Lets consider a 1.2 litre engine. Idling for 10 seconds would take 0.1 x 10 x 1.2 / 3600 = 0.33 milli gallons. 20 sec would take 0.66 milli gallons and so on...Now to starting current - it is usually of the order of 400 A peak and 250 A average over the cranking time. Average cranking time of petrol is 2 s & diesel is 3 s. A 12 V battery system would consume 12 x 250 x 2 / 3600 = 1.67 W-hr. The global norm for gasoline equivalent electrical energy is 36 kW-hr for 1 gallon. Applying a alternator and charging efficiency of 80%, it would require 0.043 gallons for 1 kW-hr charging and 0.07 milli gallons for a petrol engine crank. Finally, fuel consumption associated with enrichment during cranking a petrol engine - regular start - is on an average 0.25 gal/hr/litre cc for 4 seconds after EoC. So for 4 seconds, it would be 0.25 x 4 x 1.2 / 3600 = 0.34 milli gallon.A total 0.34 + 0.07 = 0.41 milli gallons per stop-start. So you are OK to switch for roughly 12 seconds stop or more. The caveat is, you might have to replace the starter much earlier than usual if it is not a start-stop system grade heavy duty charger.Hope this helps with the general considerations to be made while evaluating such proposals if not with the actual value. Thanks for A2A!

What is something you are dying to do again?

This answer may contain sensitive images. Click on an image to unblur it.CuddleI was recently introduced to the fact that I really like hugs! And the people who have hugged me refer to me as a giant plush teddy bear, kinda like how Matthew Bates mentioned he was the go to “feel good hug” person at his college or something of that nature.Once I actually spent a good hour cuddling with a friend of mine. We stopped, but HOLY JESUS did it feel good! Its just nice to lose yourself in another person…like a pillow that can hug you back. And now I have no one do actually hug or cuddle with after the collective mass brain destruction known as “EOC/Finals” so now everyone is just turning into a teen version of cranky old people.Sure, this may not be as impressive as other answers, but sometimes its the smaller things you are really looking for!I am certainly not looking forward to going to Paris that’s for sure.

Are the current protests due to George Floyd worse than the 1992 riots?

The 2020 protests are of course much larger in terms of geographic spread. The 1992 riots in Los Angeles, a reaction to the acquittal of four LA police officers of police brutality charges, were confined to certain sections of the city. But in terms of deaths and injuries related to the protests? No, they are not worse than the 1992 unrest. At the time of this writing, four people have been killed in violence related to the 2020 protests.[1]By contrast, the 1992 riots were far deadlier, according to an analysis by the Los Angeles Times. The violence that engulfed the city over five days in April and May required the deployment 3,500 military troops, including 2,000 soldiers of the 7th Infantry Division, and 1,500 Marines of the 1st Marine Division. These deployments supported thousands of National Guardsmen already in the city.[2]Photo: “National Guardsmen stand guard outside the ABC Market at Martin Luther King Boulevard and Vermont Street during the 1992 riots.” Nick Ut, AP. Dramatic Photos of the 1992 LA RiotsMore than 60 people lost their lives amid the looting and fires during the Los Angeles riots that ravaged the city over five days starting April 29, 1992. Ten were shot to death by law enforcement officials.Forty-four people died in other homicides or incidents tied to the rioting. By year’s end, Los Angeles had 1,096 homicides, a record. 1992 remains L.A.'s deadliest year. The exact number of people who died in the riots is open to debate, but The Times confirmed 63 victims.[3]Residents of the hardest-hit sections of the city (including Compton, Inglewood, Koreatown, and other areas of Central and South Central Los Angeles) reported multiple fires, assaults, and standoffs with armed groups.More than 2,000 people were injured.[4] Of the 63 victims of the 1992 riots, 23 of the deaths remain unsolved, as of 2017.[5]To my knowledge, large media organizations have not yet begun tracking in databases that document the 2020 protests from a countrywide perspective. This would include overall tallies of arrests, injuries, and property damage. If the protests and rioting continue in the coming days, they could soon challenge the 1992 events in terms of death and destruction on a wide scale.I remember driving on some north-south street in downtown L.A. and seeing a man with a big knife. He was strolling up the street using this knife to tear holes in the awnings in front of storefronts. He wasn't looting or stealing, as far as I could see. He was just out destroying things with his knife.I remember going down to visit a room underneath City Hall East. It was called the Emergency Operations Center. The EOC was the nerve center of communications. What was really striking was how antiquated the place was. The city employees who were there staffing seemed to be dependent on TV and radio. There were all these little video screens. When somebody said, on TV or on the radio, “report of vandalism at this site,” somebody in the room would write something on a yellow Post-It note and go walk over and put the Post-It note on top of a screen. And there were just Post-It notes everywhere.[6]—Mike Woo, LA City Council member.Footnotes[1] George Floyd Protests: A Timeline[2] Federal troops leave riot-torn L.A.[3] Los Angeles riots: Remember the 63 people who died [4] Los Angeles Riots Fast Facts[5] Of the 63 people killed during '92 riots, 23 deaths remain unsolved — artist Jeff Beall is mapping where they fell[6] 25 Years After the L.A.
