I owned a child care center. I had an older staff that really wanted to come in and read to the kids, play with them, basically a surrogate grandmother person.One of the kids was extremely rude to her, way out of line, and she slapped the snot right out of him. If he was my child I would have done the slapping and told him to apologize right then.But since it was child care I had to fire her. I also had to write a report to my licensing person and report it. I hated doing that, especially since this lady really only wanted something to do where she’d feel needed, and she missed her grandkids.So I’d have rather kept her, gotten her some basic training on the laws in child care then she’d have known how to handle this situation better.I told the parent what happened and they were rightly upset with my center and were glad the staff was gone and they never, not once, told their kid what he did was wrong.I terminated them as clients at my first opportunity. They were late on their weekly payment, so they were gone.

Joe and Mark work for the same company. They do the same job and make the same salary.Joe is 19. He just moved out of his parents’ house and got his first apartment, which he splits with a roommate. He’s single and hasn’t fathered any children.Mark is 25. He married his high school sweetheart and they had two kids together, but she ran off and left him. He’s now a single Dad.Joe is doing just fine with the money he makes; he pays his rent on time, doesn’t have any credit card debt or car payments, and always has some cash left over at the end of the month.Mark is struggling. His expenses are much higher than Joe’s. He needed a bigger house, and needed it to be near a good school, which is more expensive than the area where Joe lives. He needs a car that fits everyone. He has to pay for child care. He has to take time off when one of his kids is sick, and sometimes has to come in later or leave earlier.These two guys would have a different idea of what a “living wage” should be. We can all empathize with Mark’s situation, but how is that his employer’s fault? Remember, Mark and Joe are doing the same job for the same pay. Mark’s life choices don’t make the job Mark is doing worth any more to the company. Why should they have to pay him any more than they pay Joe for the same work? Why should they have to shell out more money to both Joe and Mark, even though the current wage is already fine for Joe?A “living wage” is impossible to define. Wages aren’t about the individual and their needs — the wage is about what the job is worth.

It’s right wing nonsense, as usual.Over $200 billion is for reopening schools and child care facilities closed because of Covid, and to help colleges who suffered from reduced enrollment because of Covid. That alone is over 10% of the dollars spent.Almost $100 billion, or about 5% is going to vaccine production and distribution.I can’t find exact numbers for how much is going to the stimulus, but the quick math is that $1,400 per person times 360 million people in the country would give you a number around $500 billion, or about 25% of the bill just for direct stimulus payments.That’s already 40% of the bill, and we haven’t addressed aid to businesses or help for local government to recover from the pandemic.Is there some fluff that has nothing to do with the coronavirus? I guarantee it. But Republicans like to pretend that anything that doesn’t go to billionaires is a waste of money, and they have no idea what is needed to recover the economy from the coronavirus because they don’t understand the issues at all. But if they understood the issued, they wouldn’t be Republicans.
