Cartwheels etc are too heavy & rigid. Could you use willow or something like a long bow, and use gut as spokes instead of wooden staves?They had gears and chains, but could they make them small & light enough? Fixed gear would be easy enough but a medieval derailleur I rather doubt.The first “pocket clock” ie a watch dates from 1492, so people could have made the gears easily some time before that.Axles, bearings & oil all existedWooden frame would be OK. And if you used the right wood could have the combination of flex & tension.So I decided probably yes, but it wouldn’t have been easy.How would it have changed things?Quite a lot.Socially, the bike in late 19C had a big impact. I read a statistic on how it doubled the average distance between bride & groom, for example.Ideas would have spread faster.A post horse or royal messenger could go faster than a bike, but for most people are bike is faster & easier than a work horseTinkers & merchants would have been more efficient, travelled further.Bikes can carry a surprising amount: think of the Viet Cong with their “cycle trucks”in Vietnam warIt would have spurred improvements in rtoads, that would have made other transport faster & easierHorses were expensive.
