PDF Editor FAQ

What can you do if your employer refuses to file a workers' compensation claim with its insurance company for an on-the-job injury?

The answer to this will depend on where you are living. I am assuming that you’ve made your employer aware of the accident and injury - if your employer refuses to file a claim I would advise you to look into what your obligations as the injured party are. Chances are there are forms for you to fill out and submit. If you can attach any medical that supports your claim and report it to the appropriate insurance company or entity as soon as possible that should help get the ball rolling. For example in Ontario all workers compensations claims are to be made to the WSIB (Workplace Safety and Insurance Board) to start a claim forms are required from yourself (form 6) your employer (form 7) and the initial treating physician (form 8). If you submit a form 6 the WSIB will call you to discuss your claim and you can inform them that you’ve let your employer know about the injury however they have shown resistance to submitting a form 7. The WSIB will then contact your employer and practically force them to submit the appropriate form.

What do I need to be a professional swimming instructor for children and babies?

Below, I will offer some concrete details from qualifying organizations in Canada, but first I will write about more general things. I see the person who asked the question is from Egypt and I am sorry but I don’t know details in that country.I am not sure what you mean by ‘professional’. In Canada, nearly all swim instructors are paid but it is usually a part time job for students so it is not usually a career. ‘Professional’ could describe either situation.Basically you need to show you can swim well and know how to be safe around water. A huge part of swim instruction in Canada is water safety; first aid, general pool rules and how to rescue a person without putting yourself at risk.In addition, you need to be able to handle being in water a long time. The pools I have worked at in Canada and in South Korea are warm enough and the air is heated but the water really sucks at your temperature. Unless the water is so warm, swimming is uncomfortable, you are likely to feel chilled after a few hours of instruction. Finally, you need to know how to instruct. The lessons I learned as a swim instructor have helped me teach ESL at universities. The key phrase I learned was to teach “Whole, part, whole”. You demonstrate the complete stroke, have the students try it, then demonstrate a piece of the stroke, the kick maybe, and have the kids work on that. Eventually, you again have the students put the stroke together and demonstrate the whole. You want to teach children and babies and that is a good first step but if you do want to make this a full time job, you will need to teach more. I never worked as an instructor full time, but I did work as a speed swimming coach full time. I also coached water polo and taught canoe safety. I learned a tiny bit about high diving but not enough to teach. I did teach some skin diving. If you want to be a ‘professional’ rather than a highschool student with a part time job, you will need to diversify as much as your situation allows. My own wide knowledge base meant that I was able to teach university phys ed students the university course in aquatics - I taught the basics of swim science - physics, chemistry and physiology, basic swimming, water polo, comp swimming, synchro, canoe safety and water rescue.Lifesaving Society | Swim InstructorThe Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor course prepares the instructor to teach and evaluate the swimming strokes and related skills found in the Lifesaving Society Swim for Life program. Candidates acquire proven teaching methods, planning skills, and a variety of stroke development drills and correction techniques.Prerequisites: 16 years of age by the end of the course; Bronze Cross certification (need not be current).Lifesaving InstructorThe Lifesaving Instructor course prepares individuals to organize, plan, teach and evaluate lifesaving and first aid skills and resuscitation techniques in the Society's lifesaving and first aid awards. To put it all into practice, you'll also work alongside a certified YMCA Swim Instructor to teach children during a swim lesson. To take this course, you must be 16 years or older, hold a current National Lifeguard (NL) or Bronze Cross certification, current Standard First Aid, and you must be able to swim strokes at the YMCA Intermediate stroke standard or equivalent. After completing this course, you will be qualified to work as a YMCA Swim Instructor and teach swimming lessons at the YMCA.

How do I report workplace accidents thoroughly and accurately?

Employers, Health care professionals and injured workers all have different requirements to ensure that workplace accident are reported in accordance with the laws.As a employer you’re required to fill out a form 7, A healthcare professional is required to fill out a form 8 as soon as they know the injury is work related (so please ensure to tell the first health care practitioner that treats you that the injury is work related or that you believe that work has contributed to your injury) and a worker needs to fill out form 6 in order for a claim to be properly established.Navigating the process of WSIB can be difficult and therefore professional help can and should be sought by a experienced paralegal or lawyer.
