What will Australia do with their F-18 fighters now that they have the F-35?

Update: As of March 4th, the RAAF has sold all 71 F/A-18A/Bs, with 25 going to the Royal Canadian Air Force to help keep their CF-188 Hornet fleet flying, and with the remaining 46 F/A-18A/Bs being sold to Air USA, which is a private company that provides aggressor aircraft (opponents to fight in training exercises) services to the US military (and any allies participating in those exercises).Simply put, the F/A-18A/Bs will be either sold to any country that wants them (and which the US permits) or they’ll be destroyed (with a few inevitably becoming static display aircraft). This month (Dec 2019) the RAAF ceased training new F/A-18A pilots and (as of around a year ago) 3SQN no longer operates F/A-18s either. As of the 18th of Dec, 2019, the RAAF currently has 18 F-35As, with 13 being in RAAF Base Williamtown and the other 5 being at Luke AFB in the US.In 2020, another 15 aircraft will be delivered to the RAAF, followed by another 15 in 2021, and again another 15 in 2022, with a final 9 (for a total of 72) being delivered in 2023. These aircraft will go to Williamtown (3SQN and 77SQN) first, with some number of left-over Hornets being handed over to 75SQN in Tindal to help with spare parts. What this means is that likely before the end of 2021 or early 2022 at the latest, the RAAF will no longer operationally fly F/A-18A/Bs, as by early 2022 at the absolute latest, 75SQN will begin receiving F-35s, and at that point the squadron needs to have already begun sending a large number of its pilots and maintainers to learn on F-35s, at which point it’s unlikely that 75SQN would have much operational capability for deploying Hornets (the RAAF will achieve F-35A IOC / combat readiness by December 2020 as well with 77SQN likely following by the end of 2021).

Why does the US Navy keep buying an F/A-18 instead of more F-35Cs?

The US Navy was never particularly enthused about the F-35. The F/A-18E was originally intended as a replacement for the F-14. The E variant is a larger aircraft than the F/A-18A-D. It has a longer range, better radar and can carry more missiles than a standard F/A-18. This makes it better suited for the air superiority/interceptor mission that was previously performed by the F-14.The F-35 was sold to the US Navy as a multirole replacement for the F/A-18A-D. It was designed primarily to perform strike missions and close air support. Nevertheless. the Navy always had lukewarm feelings about the F-35, because it is difficult and expensive to design an aircraft that excels as a land-based and carrier-based fighter. The Navy was hoping to design their own aircraft to perform strike missions, but the Joint Chiefs of Staff forced the plane on the Navy.

Why don’t the Blue Angels use the newer F/A-18F Super Hornet for their aerial show?

The demo teams have always used early model planes retired from frontline status- all the way back to the original Hellcats in 1946.This is because the planes are still visually impressive and represent the current frontline fighters while being much cheaper to “acquire". An F/A-18A has no business in modern combat… but it still loops and rolls in front of a crowd just fine! The Hornets are aging though, so the Angels will use the first “retired" Super Hornets starting with the 2021 season.
