I was co-sysop from Century XXI BBS in 1984, based in Buenos Aires, Argentina.My dad was the sysop. Century was one of the firsts BBS's running 24/7 in my country (we had an extra telephone line in our house, something very scarce at the moment, and it was fully dedicated to our BBS).It was an extraordinary experience on community building. I've met a lot of people and it was fun. In some way, we had our own social network, at scale :)Century XXI started on and Apple II with two disk drives, and later we upgraded it to an Apple IIe and a Sider II 20MB hard disc drives. Our software was "GBBS Pro", modified and translated to spanish.It was a free service, included private messages, bulletin boards and file storage (using x-modem protocol). I’ve just finished writing a book comparing players from 1893 to the present using Defensive Runs Saved, Runs Created and Pitching Runs Created per 150 games (1350 innings played) to compare the level with which each one played.A hitter’s prime is 7 out of 8 consecutive years. A fielder’s prime is 5 out of 6 consecutive years. I eliminated the one bad year and all partial years. If the player had another year at some point that was equal to or better than his prime years, I included that one (and only one).Alomar’s hitting prime was 1992-97, 99. I added 2001, making it 8 years. 1998 was his outlier and was eliminated. His fielding prime was 1996-2000. He had an excellent fielding year in 1988, so that was averaged in as well.Kent’s hitting prime was 1998-2002, 04-05. 2003 was his outlier and was eliminated. His fielding prime was 1997-98, 2000-02. He had a bad year in the field in 1999 so, as the outlier, it was eliminated.Their stats were then compared to the leagues they played in and then were regressed based on the talent pool that was available in those years (men between the age of 18-33 in baseball countries, etc.). The regression was not that important because their years were so close to each other. They also got a “position adjustment” (the runs an average 2B saves per 150 games) for 2B which was superfluous because they both played 2B.Per 150 games:Roberto Alomar: +7.56 DRS plus 29.79 Pos Adj plus 98.78 RC = 136.14 Total Runs. His OPS was .811.Jeff Kent: +4.74 DRS plus 29.79 Pos Adj plus 97.90 RC = 132.43 Total Runs. His OPS was .833.Alomar was the better fielder and Kent was the better hitter but, overall Alomar was the better player.Lou Whitaker (1983-89 / 1978-82, 86): +15.89 DRS plus 29.79 Pos Adj plus 88.37 RC = 134.05 Total Runs. His OPS was .773. Not as good a hitter as either but a much better fielder than both. Right in between them as an overall player and should be in the HOF, imo. Every single eligible player better than him (all 12 of them), ARE in the Hall.
