What do Americans think of Obama's performance as a president?
A friend of mine put together an awesome handwritten sign outlining why she's voting for President Obama this year, I think it says almost everything you need to know:Many Americans take it for granted that President Obama has been one of the most effective Presidents since FDR. It's important to remember just how bad things were when he took office and how much he's accomplished since he's been in office. We were hemorrhaging jobs when this President took office and now we've gone from 10% unemployment down to around 8.5%. If the recovery continues on this path, we'll be back to around 5% unemployment by 2016.It's not just about jobs though, President Obama has also worked to restore America's image around the world. When President Bush was in office we were invading countries for no reason, now we've left Iraq and are in the process of leaving Afghanistan. In case you needed a few other examples of what President Obama has accomplished I put together a list below:Extended child tax credits and marriage-penalty fixesCreated an Advanced Manufacturing Fund to invest in peer-reviewed manufacturing What are some useful tips for students starting their first semester at UNLV?
Let me start off by saying I love getting the opportunity to give advice for new UNLV students. There’s things I wish I had taken advantage of when I was there either at all or earlier. I’ve got quite a few so bear with me.My background: I went to UNLV from Fall 2013 - Spring 2017. I graduated with a dual major in Accounting and Finance. Some of the things I will be mentioning are Lee Business School related but I’m sure other schools on campus offer similar things (I will specify if I believe it’s only an LBS thing).Scholarships. There are so many opportunities for scholarhips. Your specific school has some, there’s TRIO, CSUN, and so many more. Take advantage. If you’re going to be a business student, the Lee Business School has one application and they find the best scholarhips for you. You can eventually apply to be a Lee Scholar. I had plenty of friends who have been/are one.Get involved. Join organizations, whether they be professional, academic, or just for fun. I was part of Beta Alpha Psi (Accounting Society), DECA, and ASAC (Accounting Student Advisory Council). The latter you get asked by professors and I don’t think any other departments have one (that I know of). There are, however, plenty of major-specific organizations on campus. Try to get a leadership position of some kind! LBS has a medallion program that forces you to get involved and you get a medallion for graduation! You can also get involved through competitions.Through DECA, I competed in an Accounting role play for 3 years. I went from not doing great to winning 3rd place. Outside of DECA, I competed in the AICPA and IMA accounting competitions one for each of my last two years. My team made it to semi finals for the first, and we won the second. It allowed us to apply our knowledge to real-world situations. It also looks great on your resume! UNLV has also competes in the Solar Decathlon, AMA competitions, and a million more.I went to UNLV as a shy and timid person. I grew so much because I joined organizations. That’s also how I made most of my friends and got my job. Because I was involved, I had the opportunity to meet the partner and learn about her firm. She was very impressed with how involved I was while working part-time and maintaining a 3.3 GPA. I cannot stress how important it is to get involved. For those in engineering, join a lab! My boyfriend is in one. It also looks great and is beneficial in many ways.Go to class. It’s boring and can be annoying depending on the class. But some classes it’s just best to understand what’s happening when in class.Use CAPS. I didn’t do this till my last year and I wish I did so much sooner. I was going through horrible anxiety that was also probably contributing to my weight gain. It was so beneficial to have someone to talk to and give me tips on how to handle things. You don’t need to go because everything in tour life is horrible. It’s always great to go. They assess you and determine if you’d be best in a 1–on-1 setting or group sessions. I’ve done 1-on-1 and my boyfriend did group sessions. I can’t stress how helpful this is.Talk to your professors. Build a relationship with them. It’s great when they get an email from you and know who you are. I’ve gotten a job opportunity through one of my professors. He also mentored me for one of my competitions and was an advisor for both of the other ones previously mentioned above. They’ve most likely been in the industry you want to join and can give you their POV, tips, and where they see you going. It doesn’t have to be all of your professors, but at least try for the classes you really enjoy and your major classes.Study abroad! This is such an amazing experience! I didn’t do the traditional route of going through USAC, but I wish I had done that as well, but it can be pricey depending on where you want to go. My boyfriend leaves for Korea in 1 month and I know he’s going to love it. I went to London as part of the International Ambassador program for LBS. It’s 4-weeks in London partnered with UNR. You have to apply and go through an interview process. The experience is great. That’s how I got some of my close friends. It was so much fun and will be forever one of my favorite times. Look for cheap options if you’re not financially well off. They also have scholarships! My boyfriend got one! I made the mistake of not even trying. Try. You never know.Use the resources on campus. There are many workshops, events, and places on campus to help you. There’s the Jean Nidetch Women’s Center, CAPS, Academic Success Center, and more. Look for them, use them. Also, you can get health insurance through UNLV!Stay organized. I procrastinated so much and if I hadn’t, I could have easily had above a 3.5 GPA. But I studied for my exams the day of typically and sometimes missed assignments because I fell asleep the night it was due. It’s hard. I know. But try to stay organized from the beginning and get on your work. It piles up later on and you’ll find yourself skipping one class to work on an assignment for the one afterwards. Don’t be that person.Network. Go to networking events and get to know both professionals and your classmates. It’s a great way to find a job.Do an internship. Once again, looks great on your resume and let’s you try out a job you thought about doing and see if you actually will enjoy it! UNLV has a career services center that helps with resumes, practice interviews, and a website for jobs. LBS has their own office for the same thing. Use it!Enjoy your time. UNLV wasn’t my first choice. I was raised here and wanted to leave but was too broke to and I didn’t wanna be drowning in debt when I graduated. I don’t regret going to UNLV one bit. It has an astounding Accounting Department and campus is so diverse. I’ve met my closest friends and boyfriend at UNLV. I grew so much as an individual. I got an awesome job at a great firm I might’ve not heard of at my dream school. You may not be able to get an out-of-home experience like living in the dorms if you’re from Las Vegas, but you can definitely still get some of those experiences. It’ll be a tough 4 years or longer, but it’s worth it in the end. You’ll be wanting it to end the entire time, but once you’re out, you’ll miss some of the experiences. Have fun and make the best of it.
