Why don't box trucks and semis have rear end bumpers?

You are thinking of this horror, aren’t you?During 2011, large truck rear impacts comprised 19 percent of the fatal two-vehicle collisions between large trucks and passenger vehicles, according to the Truck Safety Coalition.(From: Feds evaluating safety of truck underride guards )I was surprised to read the US article I quote above; under-run guards are ubiquitous and required where I work.In addition to the answer provided by Jim Mowreader, namely: ‘they [usually] do, but they are ugly, slightly hidden, and you possibly don’t recognise them’, I’ll add that very many box-body vehicles are loaded or unloaded through the doors visible in the image below.Clean, pretty, obvious. In practise, this rear-loading means forklifts are thumping up against the back of the vehicle very frequently, or the vehicles are backed up firmly onto a loading dock, for drive-in loading. Both are quite gentle activities, sort-of, but both involve slightly cushioned solid-stuff-on-solid-stuff contact that have a mostly immovable object stopping a mass that wants to comply with the first law of physics and keep moving in the same direction at the same speed.A pretty bumper wouldn’t last long, and one that protruded past the body of the vehicle would interfere with loading; at least until it was adequately crushed. The compromise is durable, ugly, under-run guards, again visible in the image above.More interesting, why don’t cars have bumpers any more? [Edit: proper bumpers]
