If I finish all certificates on freeCodeCamp, how long will I have to wait to start working on a nonprofit project?
You’ll be able to start working on nonprofit projects immediately after you finish all the certificates. We’ve built open source projects used by dozens of nonprofits. There are a ton of open issues on these projects, and we’re opening up new projects to contributors from within our community every month.First, a bit of historyCampers used to have to wait a few weeks after they finished their certificates before they could to start projects. We were doing one-off projects, and each project required careful planning and assembling a team well suited to tackle that project. For example, a nonprofit would approach our community asking us to help them create a system for helping regional animal shelters coordinate their efforts (see image above). All of these projects would involve two volunteer developers (campers), a volunteer project manager, a stakeholder from the nonprofit, and usually Michael D. Johnson - our COO, who runs our nonprofit projects. That’s at least five people who had to be involved, and had to attend weekly standup meetings.Michael has written about this process, if you’re curious.Keep in mind that what freeCodeCamp was doing with nonprofits was completely unprecedented. We were running fully remote, fully asynchronous, fully volunteer projects for nonprofits - often involving developers who had never built a production-grade application before. The next evolution of our nonprofit projectsSo over two years we were doing this, we learned a lot. One of the things we learned is that we wanted all of these projects to be actively maintained. We didn’t want to just hand over a solution to a nonprofit. Because the moment you stop working on code, it starts to degrade. So now, every nonprofit project is completely open source, and it has a dedicated team of maintainers who continue creating issues and accepting pull requests. This way nonprofits can continually deploy new versions of these apps to their servers, as we patch emerging security issues, update dependencies, and add new features.Another thing we’re doing is making these projects as generally applicable as possible. Instead of building a project for one specific food bank (like we did in the past), we’re now building a general purpose food bank inventory and logistics app that all food banks can use - and tools so that each food bank can customize the app to suit their operations. We’re calling this new initiative Open Source for Good. You can read Michael’s detailed announcement of it here. What freeCodeCamp’s nonprofit projects are like todayThese Open Source for Good projects are well under way. We already have several nonprofits using them. And we’re building tools to make it easier for campers to contribute to them. Here are a couple of them:An Open Source for Good directory that makes it easy to browse our nonprofit projects and find one you want to contribute toA system that tracks your open source contributions to these projects (accepted pull requests), and gives you credit for them. We’re starting a lot of new projects, too, so some campers will get to start new nonprofit projects from scratch, and others will be able to take over as project maintainers. The bottom line is there is a TON of work to be done. We have decades of work ahead of us before the millions of nonprofits around the world have the software tools they need to effectively carry out their missions. There’s no shortage of opportunities to get real-world experience building projects for nonprofits.
Is feeding 4 homeless kitties for 3 years considered a community service? I try to mention it in my common app application. Is it worth mentioning?
If your interviewer ever served in the armed forces, or was ever in the Peace Corps, or if their children ever did missionary work in Africa, or their spouse volunteered at a food bank, they may not be able to control a snort of derision when they read what you think of as community service. Putting food on the back porch for stray cats requires a bare minimum of time and a paltry financial commitment. You risk of being judged insincere or worse if you advertise such a small contribution as community service. You’re better off not bothering.
Do you think G7 countries will decentralize manufacturing hub from China after Covid19? Will rest of the world will show less dependency on China and start moving their manufacturing plant out of China?
Do you think G7 countries will decentralize manufacturing hub from China after Covid19? Will rest of the world will show less dependency on China and start moving their manufacturing plant out of China?I think this narrative is political BS that has already been defeated by ground reality many, many times. It’s still showing up here on Quora because some people are just bored. Most countries pursued a “China + 1” manufacturing strategy in the last 20 years. One site in China, one site domestic. When Covid-19 hit in January, their China manufacturing sites were shut down but they could get products from domestic sites. By March China has recovered while their domestic sites shut down, and they can now be supplied from their China sites and their Chinese joint ventures. If you keep track of the movement of goods, this is blindingly obvious. For example, take a look at the real time flight radar here: Live Flight Tracker - Real-Time Flight Tracker Map | Flightradar24This is the classic application of risk-management. Companies structured their manufacturing allocations exactly with this kind of unforeseen shock in mind, and it worked exactly as designed. Not only the manufacturing, but the consumer markets worked in tandem as well. In January the Chinese consumer market was shut down, while the others were up. By March the Chinese consumer market re-opened, while many others closed. Thus the businesses with global market share are more likely to survive right now.I mean, if the pols want to see these businesses move out of China, sure, giving these companies 5 years worth of revenue, and they may be willing to at least try for 5 years, and if it doesn’t work out, they’ll go back to do their own thing. Your idea, you pay for it. Fair? With so many things not working right now, the pols have to go and try to break something that’s working. The best politics ever. -/sPS: Actually, talking about things not working, come to think of it, right now, even if the US Government pays these companies 5 years worth of revenue, these companies may still say no. Here we have this:Mountains of discarded potatoes in Idaho, because processing plants are shut down and nobody else will buy them, while this:10,000 cars lining up at food banks, waiting for hours for food. This is not working. Can the local and federal government at least organize some food drive to move the food to the hungry people, and pay the farmer a little bit? No? Well if the government is this incompetent, that’s a huge business risk, is it.Most companies are realistic. Setting up a manufacturing site is high-risk. Lots of real money has to be spent. Infrastructure, transportation, educated, stable, healthy workforce, favorable finance/tax, local parts suppliers (who will want the same things). Can you deliver all these? If no, then well, they are OK losing your money for you. They are not OK losing their own money for you.
