Az Pioneer License: Fill & Download for Free

If you’re 70 or older and have been a resident of AZ for 25 consecutive years, you can apply for a “Pioneer Combo Hunting and Fishing License”. If you qualify, the license is free and it’s good for the rest of your life.

“What is the longest distance you've driven in a car, which car did you drive, and what was the experience?”My longest trip was in March 1984, with my new wife, when the Navy transferred me from the submarine base in Bangor, WA (where I went to school for a year, to learn how to fix the Navy’s newest sonar system) to the Electric Boat Shipyard in Groton, CT (to be part of the first crew of the Navy’s newest submarine, that was still under construction). We didn’t go by the shortest route (about 3,000 miles — 4 days), because we wanted to visit family in Florida and Ohio.We drove (actually, I drove, because my wife didn’t know how) in my new ’83 Honda Civic Hatchback, which was so full of stuff that you couldn’t see the back window or recline the front seats. The load was so heavy, I had to re-aim my headlights, so I didn’t blind truckers. To make it legal, I installed a passenger-side rear view mirror. The Navy taught me how to drive a bus, so I didn’t need to look over my shoulder when I changed lanes or backed up. We had studded snow tires and tire chains, in case of snow (came in handy in Ohio, driving in the last blizzard of the year. It had a CB radio (with a 108″ whip antenna that goes twangy, twangy when you drive under low trees), so I could talk to the truckers. My back window had stickers, telling everyone what channels I was on and what my CB handle was, so the truckers could call me if they wanted to. I avoided some speed traps, because truckers are great people.For non-Americans, the country is criss-crossed with Interstate highways. They are all numbered with an “I” followed by a number (As in I-5). Odd numbers go, generally, north and south, and even numbers go east and west. I say “generally, because local terrain sometimes forces the highway to go sideways for a while. The lowest numbers start on the west coast, increasing to the east, and in the south, increasing going north. For example, a highway on the west coast, going from Mexico to Canada, is I-5. One on the east coast, going from Florida to Canada is I-95. In the south, a highway going from California to Florida is I-10. One going from Washington State to New York is I-90.The trip went south on I-5, stopping overnight in Redding, CA (600 miles — 12 hours), to San Diego, via San Francisco (another (750 miles — 14 hours), where we visited friends overnight, then East on I-8 and I-10 to Tempe, AZ (near Phoenix — 400 miles — 7 hours), to visit more friends.Then, we headed to Pensacola, FL on I-10 (total of about 1700 miles), with overnight stops in Deming, NM (300 miles — 6 hours), Fort Stockton, TX (350 miles — 6 hours) and Houston, TX (500 miles — 9 hours), where we stopped to visit the NASA Space Center. Then, on to Pensacola, FL (550 miles — 10 hours) to visit family.The next part of the trip was Columbus, OH (about 800 miles) to visit my brother in the Army. We drove with no break. We had planned on a stop in Kentucky, but there was a national hunt for some escaped convicts there, so we drove through (800 miles — 13 hours). We went north on I-65 through Alabama, Tennessee, and Kentucky.The last leg to Groton, CT started east on I-80 (about 700 miles), in a blizzard. I was in a hurry, and my sister-in-law was pissed. At one point, the highway was closed, but I kept going anyway. We tried to stop a couple of times, but the exits to the motels were closed by snow. We finally found an open exit in Youngstown, Pennsylvania (180 miles, and it took 8 hours!). I backed into a snowbank in the parking lot, to keep the FWD clear. The highways were reopened the next day, and we went on to Groton, CT (550 miles — 11 hours).The entire trip (about 5,000 miles) took two weeks, if you include layover visits with family and friends.Some interesting observations.In California, a County Sheriff was clocking cars on the freeway by paralleling them on an adjacent county road, going 70 MPH on a 40 MPH road. I was warned by a trucker, on the CB. “Watch out, little Honda!”Driving in L.A. I saw my first traffic jam that had no cause, other than people slowing down to take exits or let slow cars merge. Apparently, Californians don’t understand why the ramps are called “acceleration” and “deceleration” ramps.In New Mexico, we didn’t get much sleep in the motel, because there was a train freight yard across the street, making all kinds of noise. We had arrived near midnight. In the morning, I found out that the motel room didn’t have any glass in the windows next to the door! My wife was in total shock for the next several hours. Anybody who wanted to come in, could have reached through the window and unlocked the door! Or just climbed in through the window.In Houston, there was some sort of pioneer celebrations going on, which caused a lot of traffic on the beltway going around the city. Every time I headed for an exit on the map, it was closed, and I saw pioneer horse-drawn wagons on the overpasses.Six months later, after being commissioned, my new submarine was transferred to the Bangor submarine base I had just left, so we had to move again. This time, we decided to travel across the middle of the country, passing through New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota (with a stop in the Twin-Cities to visit friends), Iowa, Nebraska (to get paid at Offutt AFB near Omaha), Wyoming, Utah (Mormon Temple in Salt Lake City), Idaho, and Oregon. A total of 3,500 miles, taking about ten days.About six months later, the entire sonar crew on our submarine was sent to Anaheim, CA to go to a factory school on a major new piece of equipment (so new, that the equipment was serial #1 — we were the first ones to have it). We got permission to take our wives along, and drove our own cars (The Navy was glad to allow this, because they only had to pay us mileage, which is a LOT cheaper than air fare and rental cars). The round trip was 2,200 miles, all on I-5, and took tdays, each way. Some of my shipmates decided to take the farther, and slower route along the coast (called the Pacific Coast Highway, US 101. This highway predates the Interstate freeway system, on country roads. (1400 miles and three days, each way) This time, my wife had a new driver’s license, so she shared the driving chores. We drove the same car, but it wasn’t heavily loaded.To non-American readers, this shows exactly how HUGE the United States is. Even traveling under military orders, it takes WEEKS.

I think that there is a high turnover there..many people with shallow roots, shallow dreams and shallow thinking….and like elsewhere in the USA a big Opiate crisis with people that eventually turn to Drugs when they see that their dream is no longer achievable. ..when they get laid off from one of the Casinos or fast food joints.There are of course people that somehow manage to have a strong Vision and build something sustainable, like this Family that builds together.Still, the place is owned or was owned by either Mobsters or Mormons, by trailblazers, by silver miners, by adventurers and outlaws, or a Mix of Both. ..and they are a strange juxtaposition of Money Making Ambition, Gambling, Pawn Shops and Instant Marriages…in a desertic landscape where many bodies are buried…lolOnce a Pawnshop Mindset, Always a Pawnshop Mindset ..no matter how much razzle-dazzle. Prior to Gambling, Vegas had a Pioneer Silver Mining Mindset and when you drive up to the villages around Lake Meade and Hoover Dam, you can feel that gritty Mining History. Hey, it’s great for a week and I went there many times and I loved the Light and Solitude of the Desert but would prefer AZ or Palm Springs and Joshua Tree to live the life of a recluse.The World According to Briggs on YoutubeA few years ago, Las Vegas was trying to reinvent itself to appeal more to the Family traveller, alas without great success. Jay Leno joked on the Tonight Show at the time ..that we all know that kids like Hookers…lol<So, it is more a town to do an unapologetic Slut-walk, to come out or to be a Showgirl or Croupier. ..in a vast Machine that creates an Illusion of what Ersatz-Suckcess is…lol. There is a lot of Fakery. Apparently, it’s a great Venue for setting up a non-divulge, non-recourse LLC, a bit like Wisconsin or Dakota…to stay anonymous in a Desert of Immorality, Oblivion or Bliss.If you want to be Slave to one of the Casino Cartels, or run a Pawn Shop, or a Junk Food Place or Entertain the Crowds like Celine Dion did, then maybe for 5 years, this is for you.
