I’m about to give you the most important piece of advice you, or any other inventor, will ever receive.Ready?Do not share your ideas or inventions with consumer product companies. They don’t need you and aren’t going to pay you anything.I’ll share what you should do, but I want to stay on this point for a moment first. For some reason there’s a public belief that companies just randomly run with ideas and pay a flat fee or royalty to an inventor for bringing it to them.Nothing could be further from the truth.Big companies, especially in the consumer products space, are not innovators. They’re data nerds. They meticulously look for and analyze trends, not individual ideas, and won’t commit one dollar of product development or marketing until their data confirms they would sell millions of units. This data will be based on actual consumer purchases in the category on a substantially similar item, and never based on surveys, focus groups, or gut feeling.I’m telling you this for two reasons:Because a company isn’t going to pay you anything unless you have actual sales histories that prove demand they can scale.Because even if they broke protocol and were willing to roll the dice on an untested/unproven concept, they don’t need you to do it.If they want to do the item, they will do it without you. If you have a patent, they will either make their version different enough that you have little to no recourse, or just ignore it entirely. If you noticed my bio, you’ve probably figured out that I’ve spent some time in an industry where companies were notorious for doing this. The inventors almost always lose.Unfortunately, the legal system works to the benefit the bigger company. Not because the laws “favor corporations” or anything like that, but simply because it’s prohibitively expensive for a lone inventor to take on the legal costs of proving their case, even when they’re right. In contrast, it’s relatively cheap for the big company to respond. Their salaried in-house counsel is a fixed cost. Your counsel is going to be paid by the hour.Can you afford to pay a lawyer $200–400 per hour to respond to the endless motions for dismissals, extensions, document requests, and all of the other nonsense their legal team will throw out there for the sole purpose of racking up your legal fees? That’s how they play the game. Eventually, if they think you have a winnable case, they’ll offer you a settlement, which will be pennies on the dollar relative to what they made, but by this time 1–2 years will have passed, the product sales will have peaked, and you’ll be so sick of dealing with it that you’ll take whatever they’re offering just so you can pay your lawyer and be done with it.It isn’t fair, and it isn’t right. But it’s ultimately what happens.Now for some good news.You don’t need them.It’s 2020. We’re about to enter 2021. It’s easier than ever to develop, market, and distribute a product. If you’ve already invented something (I’m assuming you have more than a napkin drawing…) you don’t need a big consumer products company to go to market. You don’t need to produce an expensive video. You don’t need a marketing department or a relationship with Walmart.The first thing you need to do, before you even produce a working prototype, is run a marketing test. This is significantly cheaper than developing a product, and will establish a baseline cost per acquisition, relative demand, and let you know whether you can be profitable or not.This is called a “dry test” and I have some more details on how to do this here: How to Test Market Demand For a Product You Haven’t Created YetLet me pause here for a minute, because I know what you’re thinking. Every inventor who hasn’t taken a product to market balks at this idea because inventors hate the idea of spending money on test marketing. I get it. It’s not your thing. It feels like a complete waste to “throw away” money on a product you know people will buy, right?Do you know what’s more expensive than a dry test? Producing a product nobody wants.If you get nothing else out of this answer today, at least make this your takeaway. I’ve been launching products for 20 years and half of the products I pick myself end up being duds. Your emotional connection to your invention will cloud your judgment as to how sellable it is. Your friends will tell you it’s cool even if it’s stupid. Trust me, do the marketing test. Get a second job delivering pizza or something and save up for it if you don’t have the cash.If your test is successful, then it’s safe to go forward and start developing it. The details of how you go about this will vary by product/category. I’ve found Fiverr to be a great resource for finding people who can make everything from concept sketches to printable 3D models. More advanced components like circuitry will require working directly with a factory but you can get most of your visual designs done on the cheap before you get to that point. If you don’t have the cash on hand to produce the first units, I’m a huge fan of crowd funding to cover initial costs. As as long as you know what those costs are and have a path to production mapped out, you should be able to raise enough to get your first batch of goods produced. Remember, at this point you have already done a marketing test and know there is demand, you have a prototype or prop — maybe functional, maybe not depending on your item — and you know what it’s going to cost to produce.Pay attention here because this is important.Do not produce 50,000 units. Do not produce 10,000 units. Don’t let the factory tempt you with better pricing for higher quantity. Produce only the number of units you can afford to market.Remember, you know your cost per order because you did the marketing test. You can get that lower by refining your targeting over time, but for forecasting purposes, if it costs you $10 to get a sale, and you have $10,000 available for marketing, then you can project you’ll sell 1,000 units. Always do the math relative to your budget. You can order more as you sell through profitably.Set up a site with Shopify. For fulfillment I recommend just using Amazon FBA — you’ll want to cross sell on Amazon anyway and there is a Shopify plugin that lets you fulfill your website orders from your FBA inventory. If you can’t get your goods into FBA and don’t have the capacity to self-ship, I recommend ShipBob.Advertise your Amazon URL initially instead of your own website. Yes, you make less money per sale, but as your product sells through you’ll also get a natural lift. Make an effort on your product’s Amazon page (follow these guidelines) and use Super URLs when driving traffic since this will boost your position in Amazon’s results for the keyword you want. Amazon reorganizes search results in real-time based on what people are clicking and buying, and I’ve been able to make products that were buried 2–3 pages deep appear as #1 in the search just by using super URLs.Do these things, and you’ll have the only thing a potential buyer of your invention wants: proof.Remember, Google paid $1 billion for a thermostat. Amazon paid $1 billion for a doorbell camera.They didn’t buy sketches, ideas, or inventions.They bought a company.They wouldn’t have been the least bit interested if the inventors of Nest and Ring had just shown them a prototype.Hope this helps. Until the kids are fast asleep and the work is all done, your phone and other personal stuff should stay put away.Thou shalt not rely on movies, TV, video games, and iPads. Even if the parents allow unlimited use of technology, do your best to entice the kids into other forms of entertainment. They can watch TV anytime, but playtime with you should be a special treat.Preemptive redirection and encouragement are better than yelling and consequences. “Remember your parents’ rule about no skateboards in the house? I don’t want to have to tell them you broke their rule. Why don’t we put it outside right now and skate together after dinner.” “We need to clean up with craft before we start the new game— here, help me put these crayons back in the box and we’ll be done even faster!”When in doubt, build a fort. Kids love forts! Just remember to clean up afterwards. Other eternally awesome kid ideas: make homemade slime/playdoh, printable scavenger hunt, simple magic tricks the kids can learn to perform, any craft you can eat (cookie decorating, towers of fruit, fruit-loop necklaces, make a funny face out of veggies, etc.)Offer choices. Blue pajamas or white? Mac and cheese or tomato soup? Read a book before or after brushing your teeth?Ask the kids questions. Number one easiest way to make kids want to spend time with you again is listening to their opinions and caring about their answers. Take them seriously and they will happily tell you a million and one things that will help you care for them even better.Leave at least two good comments for every non-good comment, and always tell how you solved any problems.
