PDF Editor FAQ

What are the points to be covered in a statement of purpose for applying for graduate school?

Given how pivotal a role SOP plays in determining your chances of getting your dream admit, I understand why you would feel the need to make such a query before drafting one yourself. However, this is the wrong question to ask. The question presumes that there is a strict framework or template one that should stick to so as to improve their chances of getting an admit when in reality the opposite is true. Sticking to any specific template would only make your SOP make it lose what you initially wanted it to capture, which is to showcase among other things your experiences, the emotions, and motivations that drove you to these experiences, how these affected you and your aspirations. While drafting an SOP, you must be cognizant that this is a document that is being written to be read by individuals in the admission committee who read upwards of a few thousands of SOPs every year. You do not want to bore them with a homogenized document; rather you want them riveted by a truly unique read. More often than not, what MS aspirants end up doing is they look for SOPs that got accepted and try to draft one similar to those, not realizing that by emulating the structure of that SOP you are dispensing with the very feature that allowed it to stand out in the first place- it’s originality. Do not fall into that trap.Another common mistake individuals make is that in a bid to encapsulate all their achievements into their SOP, they end up drafting a document that is more a descriptive resume than a personal statement that invokes any strong feelings in the reader. Your accolades and mundane details about your education or work experience is best left mentioned in your resume unless you can incorporate it in prose imbued with strong feelings. Make it so that your SOP couldn’t be written by anyone else but you. Your personality, your thought process, and your dreams should all be reflected in your SOP. Anyone reading should be convinced that you will be a valued addition to their university. This can only be done by you drafting a document that incorporates information known only to you and not to a third party who might have observed all your experiences.Lastly, don’t confound being original with using verbose and obscure language. Of course, you want your SOP to be written in formal English and not have any grammatical errors. But this isn’t the same as populating your SOP with words which only make it a tedious read. You do not require complex sentences to make your SOP seem more appealing. My point is, only you can decide what goes into your SOP. The one advice I can give you is to highlight your best qualities, the ones that can convince the reader that you are well suited to your program of interest. Of course, this will take a lot of introspection. Also, when discussing your goals make it so that it is very descriptive and specific instead of being vague. Show them that you know what you are doing. The rest is up for you to decide. Just be careful not to fall into the same pitfall most people fall in.If required, you could always seek help from experienced counselors while drafting the SOP. The very best counselors will work closely with you to help draft a document that is unlike any other and therefore has a high chance of being received favorably by the admissions committee. If you ask for my recommendation, I would suggest that you follow the below link and get in touch with some of the best counselors.Admission HelpAll the best!~KK

Kamala Harris believes she can help the USA reach carbon neutrality by 2030. Is this realistic, and how will she do it?

By 2030?Is this realistic,No, but a tremendous amount can be achieved. There is insufficient time from when Harris would take office in 2021 to decarbonize transportation, electrical generation, buildings, industry and agriculture and change land use, agricultural practices in the USA to achieve net zero carbon by 2030. Nine years is too little time.Among other things, cars last longer than that, typically 10–12 years on average in the USA before being junked. If Day 1 saw the banning of sales of internal combustion cars — impossible to achieve due to lack of EV supply in that year — there would still be a lot of internal combustion cars and light trucks on the road by 2030. Larger transportation assets last longer, often much longer. Boats and planes serve for decades. And synthetic and biofuels are both much more expensive, not carbon neutral but simply lower carbon than fossil fuels and have very limited availability and capacity to scale to the level of daily fossil fuel consumption for transportation.However. Nine years is roughly moonshot timeframe territory. An extraordinary amount can be done in nine years if it’s a major priority. If the USA undertook a moonshot on climate change, that would be extraordinary. If they decarbonized by 60% from current levels by 2030, that would be an extraordinary signal to the world that the USA was back in the fight and back leading it.At present, the US has ceded climate leadership to other major economies, mostly notably China. That country has the most aggressive reforestation program in the world, having created new forests covering an area the size of France since 1990. It is building more wind, solar and nuclear generation than any other country, and typically any small groups of other countries. They have 400,000+ electric buses on the roads of their cities when other countries are barely into the dozens. They buy 50% of all electric cars. The build most of the solar panels installed globally. They are a global leader on HVDC deployment, and on HVDC very large scale grids. The USA could roar back into the front of that, a PR coup that benefited the world.and how will she do it?The published material available on her site is light, but here it is.That means modernizing our transportation, energy, and water infrastructure. It means accelerating the spread of electric vehicles, solar panels, and wind turbines. And it means making bold investments in innovative technologies to build a carbon free future.Read more at Combat the Climate Crisis | Kamala Harris For The PeopleWind and solar. Check. Those are obvious replacements for fossil fuel generation, cheap, reliable, predictable and very easy to scale. Also, lots and lots of jobs for skilled and semi-skilled trades in depressed rural areas. Win, win, win.Electric vehicles? Check. The low-carbon transportation wars have been won for everything below the scale of an 18-wheeler freight truck, and Tesla among others are highly likely to prove battery electric trucks make the most sense too. You have to get up to passenger jets, long-distance freight trains and long-distance ships before electrification isn’t the clear path forward. Extending and subsidizing biofuels and some synthetic fuels as a bridge for long-lasting capital assets until they can be replaced by electric is a clear path to lower carbon, but unstated.Modernizing our transportation? Absolutely. High speed rail in a couple of corridors in the USA makes sense, specifically LA to San Fran and maybe down to San Diego, and then the New York - Washington corridor on the other coast. That’s about it given population densities. But those are absurdly big infrastructure projects through the most densely populated parts of the country in a period when the federal government has limited tools to force right-of-way. It’s unlikely that high-speed rail could be complete in nine years, but it could be on its way to being complete.Autonomous vehicles are low-hanging fruit. A little known reality of autonomous features is that they use less energy than drivers. They drive more optimally, they accelerate and brake less, and so innumerable Tesla drivers have found they go further on a charge when letting the car do the driving. Combined with electrification, biofuels and the like, this promises to make lower carbon transportation more achievable more quickly.Air transportation and ground freight transportation are industries that could reduce carbon emissions rapidly with federal action. Low-carbon aircraft fuels are already certified. Ditto low-carbon biodiesels for freight. Accelerating those approaches and electrification capital costs could tackle this wedge quickly..Energy, absolutely. Jenkins et al showed that if the US PWR fleet wasn’t forced to be inflexible baseload, then it could bid on one day reserve markets leading to bridge-to-retirement increases in profits, while simultaneously reducing both fossil fuel use and renewables curtailment. There are a lot of market-based approaches that could accelerate the transformation. Similarly, significant federal weight on HVDC and other electricity transmission corridors could speed implementation of those technologies, allowing renewably generated electricity to flow in large volumes with lower losses from the Plains to the coasts, and from the sun belt to the north. There’s a tremendous amount of opportunity to decarbonize by driving the right priorities and providing funding.Modernizing water infrastructure? That one looks like adaptation to me, not decarbonization. After all, the collapse of the midwest irrigation tunnel is killing crops in an extended area. Investments in adapting irrigation to a changing climate is incredibly tough given the amount of capital investment to date and the rapidity of change. What’s missing?Well, the Harris site highlights — presumably which have more robust plans behind them — don’t mention drawing down carbon. This is an area where more aggressive reforestation, improved tillage and glomalin-supplementation programs have legs. Once again, these are job creating programs for rural dwellers suffering from challenging economic times. Unlike the fictitious return of coal jobs, these are real jobs with real value. Fossil fuel favored carbon capture and sequestration schemes have a 50 year track record of sequestering almost no CO2 and allowing fossil fuel companies to pull up as much coal, oil and gas as they can sell, so they aren’t a solution and need to be ignored. The plan also doesn’t mention energy storage explicitly, but that’s likely under modernizing the energy infrastructure. The low-hanging fruit there is probably pumped hydro, a long-proven technology. There is an amazing confluence of opportunity in the Appalachias for pumped storage. It has a tremendous asset base of potential sites in the folds of its terrain. It’s close to the major east coast population centers. And it has a lot of underemployed skilled trades who know how to work with rock. Tesla’s grid balancing storage in California and its recently announced Megapack show the path to a Made in America solution for a certain class of fast response backup that works very well with renewables. Etc.Her site does reference the Green New Deal. I’ve read it. It’s pretty good on the decarbonization targets side, and evocative in its extensions to the excellent New Deal that ended the Great Depression and positioned the USA for major growth. It looks to me as if Harris is more adopting the Green New Deal as the template for her campaign than any other, and that’s a strong net positive. It’s the most aggressive plan out there, with the possible exception of Inslee’s 15,000 word climate change plan. Most of the attacks on the GND have been strawmen. Political calculus by Democratic centrists has mostly been about saleability and votes, not the content of the plan based on my observations. But it’s doing the job of advancing the policies and discussions necessary to attack global warming, regardless of whether the specific GND remains mostly intact or morphs into something both more effective and more saleable.

You are in 2014. Rajinikanth has just given a big flop "Linga". You have to pitch him a perfect comeback so that he can regain the numero-Uno position. What/How would you do it ? (You can remake any of his previous movies also)

Great question, first up. It puts whoever has been criticizing Rajni in the spot and makes them justify what is actually expected. Here is my humble attempt. It is drawn from a short story I had written around 7 or so years back. Mind you this is only a draft. I want to load the film with easter eggs referencing Rajni’s career. I am adding a few things on the go to make it interesting to read. The script should titled something big - Pralayam, maybe?Since the expectation is clearly to win in the BO, we are looking at an out n out commercial entertainer. Nothing held back. The template will be tried n tested Rajni in two get-ups.We explain with a prologue that shows a king and his men burying an entire area with grim dialogues that imply dire consequences to anyone who digs this up.Title credits roll with visuals that show inexplicable phenomenon. The story opens in a lavish tea estate at an unnamed hill station. Preparations are being made for the arrival of the owner of the estate, who is already known to the workers. A greying Rajni gets down from a restored Puegeot, sporting sunglasses and it is implied that he has only one arm. His wife Bhairavi (How about Nayan? Simran works too) follows him and speaks to everyone there, as Rajni walks into the house. It is implied that he is being watched by dangerous men over the next few days. Rajni is seen talking in a gruff voice to a friend/acquaintance about their ‘plan’ and how they absolutely need a ‘machine’ to make sure it does not fail, as Bhairavi seems to be clearing up a very large area of the house.Later one night, masked men with pistols, rifles enter the compound and as they near the house, they hear a huge electric crackle and a bright flash. They break in with smoke grenades and as the smoke clears, they look at a huge machine with tubes. The house is otherwise uninhabited except for some seemingly-alien technology. We cut to 1980, to a poster of Billa. Only, it is played by Kamal Hasan and not Rajni! (A running gag in the film is about how Rajni’s character hates Kamal, constantly remarking that he is not worth the hype ‘Aamam Kamal, periya Kamal!’ types) Bhairavi drives a bullet through Madras and gets down from it ignoring stares of bewilderment and walks into to a CBI meeting where they talk about an American cult headed by an Indian, travelling to India under mysterious circumstances.Bhairavi quickly infiltrates the cult as an existing member and understands that the group is looking to unearth a power of untold proportions. Her police chief suggests that political pressure is involved preventing police involvement and there is a guy named Kandhan who can help her with supernatural stuff. Guess who enters the screen in a Puegeot as ‘Raman aandalaum Raavanan aandalum’ song blares in a loudspeaker? :)The crux of the story is then how an upright cop in Bhairavi and a sincere but devil-may-care attitude Kandhan(who has experiences with paranormal phenomenon) dismantle the cult without their knowledge, till the time they catch on to it. As the movie races to the climax, we see Kandhan and Bhairavi try to stop the group at great cost(Kandhan is about to lose his arm and eyesight) when the older blind Kandhan and Bhairavi(from the present) enter the scene to effortlessly stop the cult with new tricks(picked up over 40 years). The older Kandhan’s arm visibly grows as he saves his younger self. The cult leader tries to escape but is chased by both the Bhairavis who eventually finish him off, as duo of Kandhans show down against an army of cult members. The present versions then bid adieu to the baffled 1980s versions of themselves as they disappear into thin air with one dialogue ‘It is not over yet’. The 1980s Kandhan and Bhairavi hug each other in the street as Bhairavi casually remarks that they may have missed watching Billa together, but they should definitely check out ‘Murattu Kaalai’, looking at a poster that says ‘Padapidipil’ once again starring Kamal.Fade to black and we come back to present day to where the strike team is waiting for something to happen as Kandhan and Bhairavi step out of the time machine. Kandhan simply waves them off with both hands and a satisfying chuckle. He then holds Bhairavi and offers apologies for changing the timeline. Bhairavi remarks that it was worth the risk.Kandhan nods as he responds ‘We’ll see about that. We don’t know what else we have changed in the timeline due to our actions. We still have to guard this place with our life. Anything that comes will have to come through us’, and lights a cigarette with his now-grown arm.The camera pans out to indicate that their house is built on the site that was buried in the opening scene.Optional - we can show that the cult is not completely dead to open the possibility of a sequel. We can get 1980s Rajni to time travel to 2014 in that just for kicks.
