PDF Editor FAQ

What don’t they tell you about the first week of prison life when you are initially incarcerated?

In some of the Prison systems you end up in a “CLASSIFICATION” process at a Reception Center. But when you are finally sentenced by the judge there certainly isn’t a glossy pamphlet the bailiff hands hand’s you that’s titled “What to Expect Your First Week in Prison”. For me back in the 1980’s it was some old timer who proceeded to purposely scare the shit outta me with all the worst things you civilians hear about! (What a asshole). I think in the Feds, this round I viewed a video of the BOP (Bureau Of Prisons) Director. Totally useless. You are completely for the most part,, dependent on other inmates about what is next- the do’s and don’t – and how manipulate the process in your favor. What line to get in; how to get the meds you require; the grievance process when you don’t get the meds you require. What gang or racial affiliation that is appropriate and which ones will get you sent to a different prison than everyone else. Who has pillows to sell; how often is commissary; how long it really takes for your money to catch up with you so you can go to commissary, Which Correctional Officer that’s an asshole and to avoid; which inmate has dirty paperwork to avoid hanging with and how long will we be here at this facility before they send us on to where will be doing our time. And you’d think that they (the prison administration) would tell you where you are going to be transferred to and when… but they don’t (security reasons). They wake you on some random night about 2 or 3am to pack up your small amount of property you might have and you are taken through yet another LONG LONG process of getting ready for transportation. Change out your clothing, - then the fun part of being chained and shackled. And wait, wait, wait again, You spend so much time in this process – you usually meet your best friend only because you’re locked in a “holding” room with him forever!Bottomline after sentencing the first week is chaos and anything but boring. There’s not a line at any DMV (Dept Of Motor Vehicle) in this country that would even make me break a sweat after all the waiting you get to do in prison (especially that first week!)

What exactly do police officers see on their computer screens when they pull someone over? What comes up when they run the license plate and check the driver’s license? Is it any different for an out-of-state driver?

Here’s a creepy story. My drivers license was supposed to be renewed on my birthday. But I couldn’t get an apt with DMV until 2 days later. So I had for 2 days an expired license. No problem. I was retired, had everything I needed and didn’t drive for those 48 hours. My son however borrowed my car. Almost as soon as he pulled out of the neighborhood, a cop pulled behind him and about twenty feet later, turned on his lights and pulled him over. The cop car was equipped with an automatic license tag scanner, and the scanner flashed that the owner of the car had an expired license. My son, the driver, did not have an expired license, nothing he did driving was a violation—but still he was stopped on the assumption a crime was being committed, without any evidence of wrong doing. I wasn’t even in the car.I find this creepy. It’s their world and the rest of us are just living in it on their begrudging sufference.

I'm starting to suspect I have narcolepsy w/o cataplexy due to very fast onset of REM. What are the pros and cons of pursuing an official diagnosis?

Untreated, narcolepsy is hell on earth. It's horrible. The laws about licensing vary from state to state. In GA and TN, it has never been an issue for me. I was told, when I received my DX, that I couldn't have a job that entailed transporting human passengers. Another doctor recommended that I keep my driving to less than 2 hours per day but the DMV has never questioned my licensing. Essentially, I'm responsible enough to monitor my own driving ability and to have someone else drive if I cannot. I'm much more alert when I'm medicated but my anxiety generally keeps me from sleeping inappropriately anyway.I have friends who have fallen asleep behind the wheel and have injured or killed others. There is actually more of a risk of me losing my license if I'm caught driving while unmedicated.Narcolepsy doesn't mean that you are inherently forced to take medication. I know narcoleptic who do and narcoleptics who don't take stimulant meds. For me, the only med that works well is dexedrine, an amphetamine stimulant. I have taken it, off and on, for more than 20 years. There are dozens of different meds now though and some, like Provigil and Nuvigil, aren't considered to be stimulants. I've also found that a low dose of stimulants, combined with yohimbe HCL, makes me feel pretty normal. Without stimulant meds, I was overweight and unable to think well. Sleeping constantly or not sleeping enough, comes with many of the same risks as stimulant meds, actually. Unmedicated, the risk of a narcoleptic developing comorbid health problems is almost 100%.However, since my DX, I've learned that I have some genetic mutations on the gene that controls my immune system. There is a good chance that I actually have multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, celiac disease, AND narcolepsy. When your immune system is out of whack, you need more sleep. When you have narcolepsy, your brain produces histamines, instead of the orexin that makes you sleep. My overall health improved significantly when I started taking Zyrtec and Zantac daily and stopped eating processed foods. My body just doesn't seem to absorb things well. Dehydration is also an issue. There are plenty of things that a DX and a good doctor can help you with. I've not had the best experiences with doctors but having narcoleptic friends and doing research has helped me figure out what works best for me.
