The employee’s signature at the bottom of the write-up indicates only that the employee has received the write-up and has had a chance to review it. Regardless of whether you sign a write-up with your own name, “Mickey Mouse,” or “I hope your girlfriend develops halitosis,” the fact that a message written in your handwriting appears on the document constitutes good evidence that you have had the document in your hot little hands.Of course, if I were advising the boss, I’d tell them to have two management employees witness your refusal to sign the write-up with your real name, and have them document your refusal on the write-up itself.*(Please do not mess around by writing silly things on the signature line of a contract. It’s also possible that a court would construe the fact that you placed an apparent rejection of the contract terms in a location that normally indicates agreement with the contract terms to be a fraudulent act.)

They will be more prone to being critical of other perceived errors you make that they would let slide with other employees.But if these write ups are due to stupid policies or a jerk boss (i.e., a toxic workplace), then start job hunting!

My daughter started a summer job today, working for a landscaper. A coworker who has been there a while, let's call him James, arrived at work this morning; the boss took him aside and explained that because he was a no-call-no-show yesterday, he was getting written up. (One write-up is not a huge deal; get too many and you're fired, but one is little more than a warning.) Well. James wasn't having it.He threw a huge fit, because he had texted the boss the day before, to call off. The boss said: “Yeah… you texted me at 11:30pm Sunday, so I didn't see it until I got up Monday morning, and 'I feel like doing something else today' isn't a valid reason to call off, so the write-up stands”. Fit intensifies - truly a child's temper tantrum - and the boss told James to just get in the truck and go to the job site and do your job.James left, but immediately started blowing up the boss's phone, continuing the tantrum via text. The boss drove to that job site to say look, enough is enough, just get to work already - and when James saw the boss pull up, he screamed “THIS IS BS! I QUIT!” And walked off the job. All over a nearly-meaningless write-up for missing a day of work.
