In the dawn of computers, back when I was in banking, I heard a story about a person who put their deposit slips in the bank. Most deposits you walk in, grab a deposit slip from the counter, add your info and give your deposit to the teller.The MICR line would be read or typed in and the dollars would be deposited to that account. So, if you placed your deposit slips at Chase in NYC or other major banks thousands of deposits could be deposited to you account in a day. Millions of dollars. Now, checks need to clear which takes a few days but cash is available almost immediately for withdrawl.The person did this twice and never again. Millions of dollars.Pretty neat. Low tech.

I drive for Uber. A couple of months ago, I picked up a couple of rough looking 18 year olds, slack jawed, pants dragging the ground, the real deal. Being from Atlanta, I recognized the destination as “da hood” One sat directly behind me, one sat in the front.Off we roared heading south on I-85 at the posted speed. She was mad as HELL! I woke all those babies up!I had a stroke. The ICU doctor described it as 8 out of 10, with 10 being dead! Yet, here I am alive with no after effects.”Continuing, I said, “I know “zack-ly” what I’d do; I would stomp the gas on this Altima, and see if the speed-o-meter is accurate at 160mph. Whether on city streets or the highway, I would put the “pedal to the metal.” Back in my drag racing days, I had quite good reflexes, but that was in the ‘60’s. Who knows? What would I have to lose? During warm weather, I wear several custom printed T-shirts, one of which says, in three languages, HONEST! I really don’t care. Another says, “My psychiatrist and parole officer agree, the medication is working.”The aforementioned dangerous incidences did really occur, HONEST!You can say, “Ron, no rider would ever rob, kidnap or harm a ride share driver. After all, each company has their credit card information, pick up and delivery location. They would be fools to do so. No one is that crazy.”You’ll be correct on the day, while attached to a polygraph machine, Hillary says, “I’m being truthful” and the machine doesn’t explode.Trust me, in Atlanta, GA, there are some really DUMB criminals. One bank robber demanded money, the teller stated, “I must see some ID.” The robber obliged and received the money. He left the bank, leaving his driver’s license with the teller. Another robber made a clean getaway, until he ran out of gas as he roared down the street. It all ended well, the police gave him a free ride. Another idiot chose a large Atlanta downtown bank to rob. It was Friday, when 6 local FBI officers were cashing their checks.Another thug raped a lady and departed with these words, “That was fun, I’ll be back tomorrow night at about this time with my brother.” NOTE: His brother told the judge, “Your honor, I thought we were going to meet a couple of ladies and attend a movie.” The judge asked him, “What theater were you going to?” His answer was, “Uh...”Another John Dillinger wanna-be wrote the demand note on the back of his checking account deposit slip. Yet another 25ish man laughed and departed with these words. “This is a nice bank to do business with, y'all are financing my car.” Regardless of the size of the bank, my 9 year old granddaughter could narrow down the suspects, based only on autos financed, race and age of the borrowers, along with a very basic description of the genius!Edit on Sept. 13, 2018The question was posed in such a way that an incident of this nature could take place in any location with a variety of factors in play. Someone could put a gun to your head in many scenarios.Since I drive for Uber, and had an experience suggestive of that nature, Uber driving was my frame of reference. I will have to think about this, and come up with a reasonable plan of action if it happens under different circumstances.

From the Chase deposit account agreement (11/8/2020):Funds from the following deposits are available on the first business day after the day we receive your deposit:.• The following items, if you make the deposit with a banker at a branch:.•.• Cashier’s, certified, and teller’s checks that are payable to you, if you use the “Next Day Funds Availability” deposit slip available at any branch upon request.Notwithstanding the above, I would note the following:Cashier’s checks can still be fraudulent. Perhaps the bank addresses this problem by verifying your cashier’s check, provided that you use the special “next day” deposit slip,Fraudulent cashier’s checks are used in schemes where the victim is asked to return money from the check back to the perpetrator, or to provide the perpetrator with access to the account, or provides the credentials needed to access the account.When you have deposited a fraudulent cashier’s check, you should realize that after you are granted access to the funds, if the cashier’s check later turns out to be fraudulent, you will be responsible to reimburse the bank for the full amount (plus fees).Banks can always impose an “extended” hold period at their discretion
