Yes it is true that most of the trains halt for considerably more time at big stations.There are many reasons behind this stoppage, which I am summarizing below here, hope it will help to understand the situation at big stations.Due to crew changing:-In most of the long distance trains a fresh set of crew (loco pilot mail, assistant loco pilot and mail guard) take over charge at big stations.After taking over charge they check all required items which are necessary for safe running of train in it's onward journey.Which includes a brief checking of locomotive’s under truck for any crack or wear & tear in bogie, wheels, brake rigging parts etc; all safety fittings are intact; all safety items are available on locomotives; level of fuel oil, lube oil, water, compressor oil etc are up to the mark in diesel locomotive and this activity is carried out by assistant loco pilot generally.In the meanwhile loco pilot checks out details of Brake Power Certificate of the train, notes down and fills out necessary details in it; logs crew ID and other necessary details in energy meter in case of electric loco; notes down energy meter readings; conducts brake continuity test with guard.Guard has to check the details of parcel van items, check intactness of seal on parcel compartment's door. Conduct brake continuity test with loco pilot.2. Due to heavy traffic:-Normally such big stations are big junction stations too, which means a number of trains are passing through these stations and crossing each other. Therefore it takes more time to give line clear to any train on such big junction stations.3. Due to more number of passenger:-Comparatively more number of passengers alight and board on such big stations. Specially general class passengers, they form long queues well in advance to board important trains. General class coaches are also reserved station wise for originating station and next two-three big stations where number of passengers are more.Outdoor station master manages boarding of these passengers with the help of Railway Police. Thay are authorised to not to grant line clear till such passengers have safely boarded the train.4. Due to locomotive changing:-A lot of times locomotives are changed at such big stations, like at New Delhi itself. This is done due to some trains will now work with change of traction i.e. a Diesel locomotive will be replaced by an electric locomotive or vice-versa.5. Due to commercial activities:-Amount of parcel bookings is generally more on big stations. A number of couriers, vehicles, parcels, luggage etc are booked in large amount on big stations. Unloading of previously booked parcel items and then loading of fresh items take more time.RMS (Railway Mail Service) is also loading and unloading mails and parcels to be sent by trains, and on such big stations comparatively huge bundles of mails are handled which take more time.6. Due to some petty repair work in some coaches or locomotive:-Sometimes little maintenance work are to be carried out in coaches or locomotive, such as in coaches light or fan not working etc. Electric Train lighting staff is generally not available on all small stations, therefore such complaint are attended at big stations only.Same is the case with locomotives also.7.
