When I enlisted, I filled out my dd93 and sgli, that paperwork states who I chose as my beneficiary and who to notify. This information included there home address. In the case of my demise while in service, the casualty office would have informed an officer whose job it was to inform the contact of my demise. They have a time limit of around 4 hours to do so (if my information holds correct). If you're next of kin is in a different country, I think they would find the nearest officer who can contact them. If the notified is in the states, then once they have been informed, it would be up to them to inform the rest of the family.
