Last year, they beat Mississippi State, in overtime. The year before that they lost to Missouri. No offense to either of those programs, but those are 2 of the worst programs in the SEC. BYU is normally known for it’s aerial attacks, that doesn’t phase an SEC team, particularly LSU, also known as DBU (defensive back university, for all the DB’s we’ve put in the NFL). The difference will be stark. While I don’t expect a runaway by LSU by any means, you’ll absolutely see a big difference in talent. BYU is at a recruiting disadvantage. They will always get the kids who will go to that school for religious reasons. And they will pick up a few other kids who are willing to make the sacrifices to play at a fairly decent name school who has had some past football success, kids who just want to play Division One football and this is their best shot. But their recruiting base is not a wide net like LSU’s. LSU gets first pick of the entire state of Louisiana, who per capita produce more NFL players than any state. As well, LSU’s recruiting tentacles reach across the Southeastern US. A big school with big resources and no in-state competition of that caliber, unlike Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia or Florida. BYU has to recruit in-state against Utah, plus deal with a strict ethics code and admissions policies. That adds up to LSU likely putting a stronger more competitive product on the field.In season openers since 2000, LSU is 15–2. The lost last season to Wisconsin, a game they had no business losing, but lost nonetheless. I’m sure that will be retold to many Tiger players and not lost on the upperclassmen, that losing to start the season isn’t tolerated. Before last season, they’d won each of the 4“showcase” season openers, where they face a name opponent, ranked opponent, or play at a neutral site. Last year’s loss was at Lambeau Field. This year’s showcase opener will be in Houston. Expect a Tiger victory.
