I scrubbed toilets and cleaned a massive nightclub today to make a few bucks to barely eat, as I’m not allowed to work without my ID and can’t drive 60 miles to my post without a license anyway.This stopped being a matter of neighborhood do-goodery the moment he stole my wallet. This stopped being a matter of mere justice the moment he threatened my life and alluded to harming my loved ones. Now, its a matter of justified vengeance. And justice - even when embodied by feelings of vengeance - is something I believe in quite adamantly.As I sometimes say when I give food and clothes to the homeless and down on their luck,“If you steal food because you’re starving, I’ll pay your bill and take your out to lunch. If you’re a drug addict, I’ll get you the help you need. If you’re fighting to survive, I’ll empathize and lend a hand. I’ve lived on the street. I’ve starved. I’ve been beaten and abused. I survived hell myself and understand what you’re suffering.”Depending on the person and circumstances - namely if I feel the individual is an imminent threat - I may add an alternate, optional end.“…But the moment you cross that line between victim and victimizer, all my empathy and self-sacrifice will evaporate.
