Do you think high school is too taxing on the students?

US high schools are well below the OECD average in math and barely above average in reading. The latest ranking of top countries in math, reading, and science is out — and the US didn't crack the top 10US education used to lead the world. Now it is at best mediocre. High School has been dumbed down by a long list of anti-performance regulations like social promotions, elimination of slow achiever and high achiever tracks to tailor instruction to the abilities of students, dumbing down of reading lists and skills testing, and the mandate to provide teachers in any language the student requests regardless of the academic skills of the teacher. Add in the complete collapse of the authority of teachers to maintain discipline in classes or remove unruly students, and overcrowding of classrooms including mandatory inclusion of illegal immigrant children who are illiterate in their own country and do not even speak English, and you have a recipe for the collapse of quality of education in US high schools. At present, more than half of US students admitted to four year colleges are required to take remedial mathematics and/or remedial English to attempt to bring their fundamental skills up to miminal college standards, because they did not learn these skills in high school. Remedial Education - Center for American Progress. Only 20% of remedial math students and only 37% of remedial English students pass the remedial courses and move on. In college remedial classes, unprepared students get the least-trained teachersSome high school graduates are so illiterate that they can’t even read their own diplomas. Illiterates, no-shows, all seniors graduate at DC high, A diploma I can’t readA high school diploma used to be a credential that was earned, a credential to be proud of, a credential that signaled to prospective employers that the Holder was capable in mathematics, reading, and basic knowledge of adult skills such as following instructions, discipline and determination, focus on goals, and self-motivation. Maybe even learning a little judgement and critical thinking skills? Not any more. It is just a piece of paper with little value, and little to be proud of. High school has been so dumbed down and failed its purpose that in many instances it is just juvenile daycare for unruly, unmotivated, and uninterested teenagers. A place for parents to park their kids while they go to work, making them someone else’s problem for a few hours a day.Too taxing? Hah! The US is being massively overtaken by other countries which actually value education and instill education as a priority in their families and their schools, instead of “political correctness” and political indoctrination. For many high school students in the US, school is just a nuisance between holidays, vacations, and breaks, where they take the summers off and forget most of what they learned the nine months before.I have been a highly in-demand private tutor at high school and college level for more than 15 years. Why so in demand? As one of my client parents put it, “I pay a fortune in property taxes for the public schools, then I pay another fortune to send my kids to an expensive private school, but then I have to hire you to actually teach them something!” I see first-hand how our schools are failing our youth.Too taxing? Exactly the opposite. High schools need to return to actually educating, instead of daycare and political indoctrination.

Is having a child born into U.S. citizenship the best thing that could happen to a prospective parent from another nation?

My husband is American. We live in the UK. Our first child was born stateside and the second two were born in the UK.The USA is one of only two countries in the world who tax their citizens whilst overseas. My husband is obligated to file his taxes every year, regardless of not living there. My dual national children, 2 of whom have never set foot in the country, will have to in the future. Whilst they can off set a certain amount against their Uk taxes, if they pursue careers as high earners then they may have to pay tax to the US. An interesting article; Note to Expats: No, You Didn't Dodge the U.S. Tax BulletSimilar reporting of savings, investments etc all have to be reported to the US government regardless of the fact that those accounts may not be held in the United States.Ive experienced birth in two countries. In the US my care was great but my hospital bill was $84,000. My insurance covered all but $6000. We were receiving the bills for my daughters birth up to a year afterwards. There's nothing like welcoming you to parenthood than a bill! My two children born in the UK I walked out of the hospital after receiving exceptional care without a bill following me. Less stress for parents, happy parents= happy baby.A few differences in the after moments of birth. Baby number one, i gave birth with my legs in stirrups with the OB staring and poking at my area, telling me when to push and for how long. Baby 2 & 3, left alone with midwife hanging around in the background telling me to “"go with whatever I feel” I laboured standing up, on all fours, over the bed, pushed when I felt the urge. No IV, no medical intervention, no pushing of pain relief. Baby number one, cord was cut immediately. Baby 2 and 3 delayed cord clamping due to massive benefits of waiting at least 3 minutes. Also encouraged to do skin to skin. Baby number 1, taken away for a bath within 2 hours of birth. Baby 2 and 3, encouraged not to bath them for as long as I chose due to benefits of keeping vernix on baby. After care following baby, I left hospital with baby number 1 being told that they would see me at my six week checkup. Baby two and three I had a midwife come to my home on day 3, 5, 10 to check on both me and baby. A lot of clinics are held everyday of the week for you to take baby to be weighed or if you need help in between your midwife/health visitor home visits.A further difference, in the US 12 weeks unpaid leave for mother. In the U.K paid maternity leave is up to 52 weeks which can be split with your partner. What a fantastic start to life for a child to be with their parent rather than carted off to daycare at 3 months old. Furthermore, people within the UK workforce have a legal allowance of 5.6 weeks of vacation every year, and an average work week is 37 hours. Work life balance encourages family time which is of huge benefits to any child.Whilst our children all are dual nationals in the future we will give them the option to revoke their US if they prefer. Unfortunately for us we consider it more of a hinderance than anything else. Maybe that'll change over the next 18 years!

Why do the Republicans keep saying that work restores dignity? What’s so dignified about working?

By “Republicans” I think you actually mean politicians. So, let's think about what politicians call “work”Raising kids as a nanny, or daycare: workRaising kids in you own home: not workRemodeling someone else's kitchen: workRemodeling your own kitchen: not workLiving off your parent's investments in a trust fund: workLiving off your parent's investments by using their basement: not workBuilding a robot that can think and move: workGiving birth to a human that can think and move: not workWhat do all of the “work” items have in common? They generate taxes for the government! What about the “not work” items? They do NOT generate taxes for the government!I think we have an answer!
