If you want a life like Indian Army and a job satisfaction like Indian Army then you can only get it in Indian Army. Comparing Indian Army with CAPF is like comparing apple with oranges.Those who all joined CAPF in expectation of a life like Indian Army eventually ends up in a life long identity crisis which is not less than a mid life crisis where you either keep explaining that you are not Army or you keep justifying that how you can be like Army but you are not. Join CAPF if you understand their role and keep realistic expectations. Don’t trust those who will tell you to join CAPF because it offers same or similar life like Army or the role is same or the operations conducted are same or even the weapon profile is same. These advisors who are ones who actually knows nothing about Army and CAPF and end up comparing Apple with Oranges or a bird with fish.I will give you the finest reason to join CAPF. Read it carefully and read it deliberately.You will be one of the reason because of which this nation will grow and develop. Doesn’t matter you go in CPRF, ITBP, SSB, BSF or CISF - every day you will be ensuring the law and order are in place or enforce it when state police drastically fails or you will be responsible for Border Management in challenging terrain where only bravest can survive.You will be providing citizens of this nation a sense of safety and security if you join CAPF. You will be the law enforcers in those time when state police fails to control the situation.You will be preserving national integrity.You will be promoting social harmony in the civil society.You will be upholding supremacy of constitution of India.You will be the reason that people of India residing in border areas will feel a sense of security and nationalism.You will be the reason of successful prevention of transborder crimes and will prevent unauthorised entry or exit from Indian territory.You will be preventing smuggling and other illegal activities through porous borders.As a CAPF officer you will be demonstrating highest level of professional excellence, dedication and devotion to the nation.You will be the reason of healthy working environment for CAPF personnels.You will get professionally developed through training and modernisation.You will be an example in front of your men depicting fairness, integrity and honesty.You will become role model for your personnels.When you will wear the uniform and see yourself in mirror before leaving the house, you will feel a sense of pride and sense of responsibilities on your shoulder.You will undergo anti-naxal operations and you will be the hope of your men that you will take them in operation safely and take out safely. You will show the world that casualty doesn’t define success of an organisation but it is the result which you will bring out of your professional knowledge, courage and leadership in operational role.You will establish law and order in red corridor of India.You will be protecting protects airports, seaports, metro rail networks, government buildings, heritage monuments (including the Taj Mahal and Red Fort), opium and alkaloids extractions, nuclear power plants, and space installations which are vital installations and pride of nation.You will play various games with your men you lead and sweat with them. You will understand them and work for their welfare.You will travel all around India and get chances of traveling abroad. Your knowledge, exposure and interactions leading to experience will transform you and your men.If these reasons gives you goosebumps then join CAPF as an Assistant Commandant. If you are expecting something like Indian Army then be ready for a lifetime frustration and identity crisis. Join if you are proud of being part of Central Armed Police Force. Look at this picture and look the pride in the eyes of his parents. Feel that and aim for that.Don’t opt for CAPF as 2nd career option. It should be the 1st! It should not be that you couldn’t make it in Army then you are keeping CAPF as 2nd option. Feel it as it is your first option.

Both are recruited through UPSC through different exams, the difficulty level of both exams itself gives an indication to the preferred service. IPS is an all India service while CAPF (CRPF, BSF, ITBP, SSB,CISF) are still fighting for getting organized cadre stature. IPS officers initially are posted as Incharge of a sub-division/Circle of a distt as SDPO/ACP supervising few police stations under one sub-div. While CAPF officers as AC are mostly posted as company commanders looking after one company(approx 100 personnel) in a battalion. Though shoulder insignia of both at initial stage is similar (3 stars) but IPS officer do promote very rapidly and in a couple of years they will be district Police heads as SPs. Taking 15 years of service as benchmark, an IPS can be holding post of DIG of CAPF, but an AC recruited at same time may be still at Dy. commandant/ 2ic post.
