It passed by a 63–37 margin because, who wouldn’t want that?Except the proposition is completely useless. Here’s such a notice.That’s it. That’s what Proposition 65 requires.In other words:The law is so broad it pretty much requires a sign like this everywhere.The law is so poorly drafted that a generic notice like this is more than sufficientSo, if you live in California, you pretty much ignore these useless and ubiquitous signs because they tell you absolutely nothing.Now, it’s not like the law hasn’t done some good, but the cost-benefit analysis is rather more complicated. Many consumer products were re-formulated to remove toxic ingredients, but there’s no guarantee that makes the products themselves safer. Now you pay more for things that may not actually be safer.Now, many jurisdictions have similar laws, but they are much more thoroughly thought out. They’re also geared to places where you’re more likely to be exposed, like the workplace. For example, here in Ontario, workplaces have to have information sheets on all the chemicals they have on site, even if it’s just printer toner (which isn’t terribly dangerous, but has dangers).Other direct democracy initiatives have:Crippled the ability of the legislature to raise enough money to run state servicesFilled the prisons with people convicted of three minor felony convictionsTried to ban gay marriage.When Canada decriminalized marijuana, it took years of writing legislation and regulations to set up a system of licensed cannabis dealers that would take local concerns into account. It was slow, but the resulting system has largely worked.

I spent about 3 months preparing the character.I started by consuming content about Steve Jobs. The script was a fantastic resource but after reading it I was left with as many questions as answers as to why he was the way he was and why he made some of the decisions he made. I started by watching documentaries and interviews Silicon Valley Historical Association about him and collecting youtube content Inspired By Jobs: Technology and Soundcloud files on jobs.This was to try to understand some of the broad themes of his persona. What I was looking for was patterns on consistent behavior and ideals. I heard him repeat his story about a computer being a tool for the mind and that we should all be bold enough to create the world we live in. I also picked up on his value for diverse education through experience. I then started to dissect the nuances of his behavior, the walk, the fact that he has an almost imperceptible lisp, his accent that was a combination of northern California and Wisconsin, the way he paused before answer, and nodded in understanding, the way he bowed in namaste when receiving praise, and stared with contempt when in conflict. I noticed how he used his hands to talk and how he counted with his fingers (pinky finger first), how he used the word "aaaaand" and "noooow" to think about what he was going to say next. But I quickly found that, while learning "how a person is" ultimately is the key, you have to learn "why a person is".Once armed with this external impression I wanted to get a better feel of why he saw the world the way he did. I wanted to know why he liked what he liked and pursued what he pursued. So I started to consume what he consumed.Books he read: Autobiography of a Yogi : Paramahansa Yogananda,Mucusless Diet Healing System: Arnold Ehret, Be Here Now: Ram Dass.Researching the artists he admired: Bauhaus, Folon, Ansel AdamsEating the food he ate: Grapes, Carrot Juice, PopcornStudying the Entrepreneurs he admired: Edison, Edwin LandThen I met with the people that he knew and worked with to unravel some of the subtle quirks and conflicted decision making that I couldn't rationalize. Alan Kay, Avi Tevanian, Jeffery Katzenberg, Mike Hawley, and many others were phenomenal resources.I then worked with my acting coach Greta Seacat to relate his emotionality and behavior to my own. She helped me make it personal and authentic.But in the end one of the greatest tells of the man were his creations. They were elegant, intelligent, thoughtful, precise, artistic, bold, visionary, complicated, efficient, fun, entertaining, powerful, imperfect, and beautiful on the inside and out.... Just like Steve.

Japanese eggs are amazing. Very flavorful.Different … than what?This depends on what part of the world you eat eggs in!I live in Japan full-time, I have a few observations.I can’t report on the taste of eggs worldwide, obviously, it varies from region to region, farm to farm, but as an American visiting Japan for the first time, nearly 25 years ago, Japanese eggs made an impression on me.The first thing I noticed?Rich, bright orange yolks.Unlike the pale yellow yolks I’ve seen everywhere I’ve eaten eggs in America, except central America, which also have bright orange yolks.What I was seeing, I believe, is the difference between industrial mass-produced chicken eggs, and smaller-scale, locally grown chicken-laying eggs. Chickens given different feed, I would later learn more about. Back to that in a moment.I discovered that Japan’s ecosystem, and national delivery system, is more localized and less industrialized than what I experienced in the U.S.A lot of what we see here seems more farm-to-market. Organic isn’t the right word, because Japan isn’t “pure” and natural, all the way down. But it is more organic in the sense that small farms and ranches and local resources are more immediately available and accessible to consumers all over Japan.Chicken tastes great here. Chicken eggs taste great.Seafood? don’t get me started.Japan has a well-integrated local food culture that provides, on average, high-quality produce and meats that would, in places like the U.S., be advertised as “free range!”, or “organic!” or “locally grown!”, meaningless advertising buzzwords, to justify higher-cost boutique varieties.In Japan? it’s all true, and it’s … just average food. The bar is high. And it’s normal.Japan is about the size of California, thought it has a population size of half the U.S., so food production and distribution is pretty much same-day, or overnight, anywhere in Japan. This plays a role in fresh produce and eggs and meats arriving anywhere on the islands, in short order.Back to my earlier unfinished story. Why the bright orange yolks?Simpler than I imagined. Among other nutrients, the chicken feed contains a blend rich with carotene. Carrots. No great mystery. This makes the yolks have a richer color.Is it for show? Is it just a coloring agent? Does it improve the flavor? I don’t know.Bottom line: Japan loves chicken eggs. Even average eggs I’ve tasted here are above average. And when we buy good eggs? They really are special, and I benefit from this locally-accessible everyday treasure.
