First and foremost: I think this Republican-led shutdown is both bad for the country and a shortsighted, stupid, and ultimately counterproductive step towards their publicly declared goals. Defunding Obamacare does not remove the legal requirements of the law like the individual and employer mandate; it removes FUNDING for things like Medicaid expansion and the subsidies to make policies more affordable for low income families. It would not counter any of the things that impose new requirements or make policies more expensive; it would mainly stop the allocation of public money to low income families and nothing else. By Friday, though, the House passed H.R. 3223 – The "Federal Employee Retroactive Pay Fairness Act" – by a vote of 407-0. Now that's some bipartisanship! (The bill is currently on the Senate calendar and the White House has already given backing.) In response to that, U.S. Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel recalled 350,000 of the 400,000 furloughed Department of Defense workers. Therefore, in addition to the U.S. Armed Forces and the U.S. Postal Service (neither of which were affected by the furloughs), about 84% of the Federal civilian workforce is actually at work. However, none of the 2.9 million, either at work or on furlough, will get paid until the shutdown is over. When you take a look at the Linden-Stein Graph, you can actually see how effectively the House GOP is controlling the bigger conversation about discretionary spending. (Mandatory programs like Social Security and Medicare are a different matter.) Here’s my suggestion: a personal document scanning/filing system. The kind of program that comes bundled with many scanners, but almost always Windows-only; and since it’s written in Python it would be cross-platform. (Please let it run on Linux so I can use it!)First, pick a Python library module that supports some kind of GUI. There are many choices but I suggest wxPython:How to Learn wxPythonNext, use a scanner driver and get your app to scan a document when you click on a GUI button. I’m not sure if there is a scanner driver library that supports all of Windows/Mac/Linux but here’s one that at least supports Windows/Linux:python-imagescannerOnce you have basic scanning working, here’s what I have in mind for features:Scans will not ask you for a file name but will automatically pick a name like “Scanned Document 2016–11–12 21:50.pdf” So if you have a big stack of papers to scan, you can focus on just getting them all scanned, not on picking names and directories.Then add renaming functionality to let the user override this default.A GUI button that scans a color photo at a high resolution in colorAnother GUI button scans in high-resolution greyscale (for letters, book pages, etc.)Another GUI button scans in medium-resolution black and white (for magazine pages, etc.)Picks a useful default image format for each of the above.The “scan photo” button would try saving in both PNG and JPEG, and keep whichever file is smaller, by default. (A clean scan of a cartoon or a corporate logo or something might compress better in PNG, and PNG is lossless so it’s pure win if it’s also smaller.)The “scan magazine page” button would save in PDFThe black-and-white would also save in PDFFor PDF scans, by default, each scanned page will be appended to the “current” scanned document. Probably pop up a dialog saying “append to current?” with a default of “Append” and the other button “Create New Document”Or perhaps have a “Close out this document” GUI control that changes the default document to “none, create a new one” so subsequent scans won’t append anymore.Maybe use PyPDF2 for this?Related to the above: the ability to split pages out of a PDF, creating a new PDF with just the chosen pages.Add folder management: ability to create folders, move documents into folders, specify default folder for each document type (scanned text can go somewhere different from a scanned photo, etc.)Add OCR ability, where new PDF documents are automatically run through OCR and the extracted text saved as part of the PDFOCR on PDF files using PythonAdd an indexer that indexes all the content in the filing directory and all its sub-directories (both filenames and OCR-ed content, and document content if anyone stores plain documents like text files or word processor files in there)Or, perhaps, figure out if an indexer is already running and just provide a search interface that taps into it. For example, on GNOME 3.x desktops the default indexer is Tracker, so figure out how to use Tracker to search through files.The reasons I suggest this project:You can start simple, with almost a “Hello, World” GUI app, and build upon that one feature at a time.Once you have default scan types with different GUI buttons and the ability to save the documents in different formats, it’s already a somewhat useful program. Then the more you add, the better it gets.You can incrementally build on what you wrote. If you release it as open source you might get a community of users and people might start contributing new features.This is the sort of program I wish I had; I believe this would be filling a genuine need.
