PDF Editor FAQ

Which resume do employers prefer?

I’ve reviewed more than 100,000 resumes in my career, most recently heading up hiring for Amazon.com.The quick answer is no, don’t use the resume template you provided. While the resume format may look interesting and intriguing, but there are four fatal flaws with that format:It has your picture. Most corporations are kinda crazy about having a pic attached to your resume. Why? Because they are afraid of lawsuits. In the past, pre-digital era, employers would simply cut out (yes, with a scissors) or use a Sharpee to black out the pic. In the digital era, it’s a little more difficult to do, since there will always be the original digital image of you floating around in the ether, even if it’s blocked/blanked on an updated resume. Pictures scare employers. Don’t use them.It uses white-on-black text. This typeface is extremely difficult for an ATS (applicant tracking system) to scan properly. In many cases it will either be ignored or will end up as garbled text.It uses columns. Columns are again another ATS no-no. The easiest import for an ATS is text, then Word, then PDF. But only in one column format. It uses gradation scales for the skills. While this may appear to be useful to the resume reader, you need to keep in mind that the first resume reader is typically not a human. Gradation scales are not only meaningless in an ATS, they produce read errors. And let’s be realistic—the ratings are subjective and there is no standard scale to apply, so they are relatively useless on the resume itself. As an interesting side note, I used to enjoy watching the look on candidate’s faces when they first realized that the literary gibberish I was holding in my hands during the interview was actually what had survived of their originally well formatted resume, after being ingested and later spit back out by our ATS. A great resume has to survive both being scanned into the ATS as well as later printed for the interview. Most employers prefer a standardized resume format which covers all of the needed information and imports (and exports) well from their ATS. How do I build a strong resume?

Last semester, I had spent good amount of time in building a CV/resume for placements and this is what I learnt during the course and from my seniors.Your resume should be of 1 page (in general). Research based CVs or Designer CVs may have more than 1 page.Your resume is a one - line document. The full stop should be no where but at the very end of your resume i.e. the last character in your word document should be the full stop. For separating statements, use ‘|’ character.Your resume should have Address, Contact No., Email ID and LinkedIn profile link on the top. A photo of yours is generally discouraged to be included in a resume.A resume is written in passive voice with no usage of pronouns (me/my/I). Brevity has to be maintained. Also, try to use action verbs, they generate impact to your work done.Action verbs for resumeTry to reduce the blank space in your resume as much as possible. In order to make it dense, your resume should have statements spanning 1 line at maximum only. Another advantage to it is that it will not break the bullet or numbering in a list (a statement continuing to the next line will not have a bullet in the start and it looks odd). There should not be any exclamation marks, question marks in your resume. A resume is a formal document consisting of statements only. You should highlight/emphasize important words by bolding them. Numbers, especially, should be bold as they state some results achieved by you.Keep all your certificates, important documents right from your childhood carefully and do not lose them. The world won’t believe you even if you swear on your mother unless you give them the proof. Needless to say, you won’t be able to write it if you can’t prove it.Zero Grammatical Mistakes. Perhaps, the most important point while building a resume. You CANNOT afford to have any mistake of as small as a blank character. If the recruiter catches you on this, it will be a big turn-off. Basically, they see this in a way that if you cannot manage to correct the minutest details in your CV, you will likely miss out on details in their work too. You will be looked down as someone who is not serious about getting a job.Lastly, always submit a PDF form of your resume. PDFs are read-only documents (so no one can fudge with it) and they give a more professional look to your resume.

How did Jeremy Blum design his resume in PowerPoint?

Leaving the content of the CV aside, PowerPoint can be used to create all kind of documents, including this one. Just select a different page setup (letter, portrait in this case I think), start with a completely blank page without titles or text boxes, and put the various text blocks and shapes on the page. Then save as PDF and you have created a document that looks like it was done in a word processor in PowerPoint.
