PDF Editor FAQ

Should people resist Western values?

Questioning is a bit closer to the idea than just flat-out resistance. My weekly contact with a group of remarkable Muslim students has made me aware that they have some perspectives regarding Western values that are productive and some that are completely non-productive:Left-handedness. The subject of how to deal with left-handed children came up in discussion. Almost to a person, the non-westerns stated that children should be forced to become right-handed. Three of my students have children born in the USA who are natural left-handers; two of them have forced the change and the other is struggling with what to to.Credit cards. Last night we talked about credit versus debit cards. Almost to a person, my Muslim students use only two methods of payment: debit cards or cash. Because they are not to use interest, credit cards are taboo. None of these students are accumulating huge pools of debt to finish their education and none of them would consider laying down a credit card to make a large purchase. Whereas most American students are swimming in long-term debt, the Muslim students aren’t.Western values resist the idea of submission to any religious or doctrinal authority. Non-Western values emphasize living a life that is structured by beliefs and practices. One prays five times a day, resists interest, avoids certain foods and definitely alcoholic beverages. Individualism plays a lesser role than social relations. Here is the great irony: many of the freedoms that the West values end up leading to bondage — to debt, to addictions, to lack of any cultural grounding. While the non-Western perspective introduces many cultural limitations, the Western perspective fails to standardize expectations. As with most things, best practice probably lies somewhere in the middle, especially if you are born left handed or gay.

What advice would you have given your 20 year old self on business?

Move out! You’re too young to be living with a girlfriend!Ok, but on business:When I was 19 I started a business that was a debit card for college students. I called it “CollegeCard”. I wish I had a photo of the card we gave students. It was beautiful. This was in 1987, before every 18 year old had a credit card and debit card. Nobody had this then. And most stores in my town didn’t accept any credit cards. So here’s what we did. We convinced every store to give 20% discounts to “CollegeCard” members, we convinced them to install point of sale machines, I programmed the point of sale machines and programmed the accounting system to keep track of every student’s money. We also set up a delivery service like GrubHub back in 1988. We delivered from about 10 different restaurant to people who used our card.We then sent emails to 20,000 parents about our service and said, “This is how you can keep track of your child’s spending in college, plus they will save money”.We had about 1000 people sign up for $21 a semester. It doesn’t seem like a lot but it kept us in business. But one of my partners left for graduate school and the other partner used his experience to get a job at Visa. And so every day I would back up the computer, deal with customer service, deliver pizzas and gyros to fraternities, and try to sell the company to the local bank.I was horrible at delivering pizza. The pizza would always slant to the side and the cheese would fall off the pizza. I would get no tip.And I was 19. So I wanted to deliver pizza wherever anyone was having a naked party. I just assumed that was a “thing” - naked parties. But no naked parties and nobody ever tipped me. And the business shut down.If I were to give advice to my 20 year old self it would be like giving advice to someone who isn’t yet ready for the Olympics but here’s how you begin training for the Olympics:A) Physical Health - exercise every day, eat well, get enough sleep.B) Emotional Health - you are the average of the five people you are around. Be around good people. Make sure the romantic partner you select is good for you and not a source of too much stress. Look for someone who is kind to you and happy for your achievements and vice versa. Also, always learn from people smarter than you.C) Creative Health.i) Write down 10 ideas a day. Could be business ideas. Could be book ideas. Could be ideas for art works. Could be ideas to help other businesses. You don’t have to keep track of them.If you do this for six months, your brain chemistry will change. You will literally rewire your brain to be a creativity machine. I know this is true not only because of me. I started giving this advice seven years ago. For seven years I’ve been getting at least 20–30 thank you emails a day for this one piece of advice.ii) Read every day. Yesterday I read “Home Deus” by Yuval Harari. Today I started re-reading “Tiny Beautiful Things” by Cheryl Strayed. I also got an advance copy of Garry Kasparov’s book comparing chess with life and learning.I once asked Steven Dubner (author of “Freakonomics”) how much he remembers when he reads a book. I felt like I didn’t remember enough. I thought he would say 30 or 40%. He said “1%”.Phew!Have one takeaway for every book you read. But read!D) Spiritual Health. What is spiritual health? It’s such a confusing topic. Is it prayer to a God? Or gods? Or a Buddha? Or a guru? Is it meditation? Is it listening to music? It’s what you decide it is.But I guess the most important thing: realizing that almost everything in life is a mystery. Surrendering to that mystery. Trying not to control the world, or the people around us.When I wake up I practice that surrender. I ask, “Where am I?” “Who am I?” And I wiggle my toes. And I pretend once again to wake up in a world I never knew. A world I never will understand. A world where only excitement and love await me.E) PLUS, MINUS, EQUALWhen I was 20 there were many things I had to learn.I had to learn sales. I had to learn how to program a computer. I had to learn how to write. I had to learn how to have good relationships.I had to learn nutrition. I had to learn creativity. I had to learn basic business organization. I had to learn how to execute on ideas. So many things. Overwhelming. But I wish I knew this one simple technique:Find your:PLUS: Someone to teach you. Could be both a real person (a mentor), or virtual mentors (books you read, people you admire from afar). I have 100s of mentors now. I am so grateful for them. I wish I knew this at 20.EQUALS: Find the group of people who will challenge you. Who you will grow with.Examples: Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, and Bill Gates, were all teenagers at the Homebew club in San Francisco. They challenged each other and lifted each other to create billion dollar companies.Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, William S Burroughs all hung out together at Columbia University before they wrote their first books. They supported each other, slept on each others couches, edited each other, and within ten years defined an entire literary movement. The Solway Conference or 1927: Count the future Nobel Prize winners in the conference photograph.I can give 100 more examples.MINUS: Find someone to teach. You learn when you teach because it helps you solidify the things you learned. You also learn by the questions students ask. They might ask questions you never thought of.My biggest teachers are the people I initially set out to teach. The brain is a beautiful and vast super computer. Everyone has something to teach. Even those who you are teaching.F) PLAYYesterday I went on a Nascar-built go-kart facility and raced around for an hour. I got into about five accidents. It was fun.The other day I played chess for about three hours. The day before that I played air-hockey and pac-man. And before that poker. And before that backgammon.Novelty and play awakens the brain. And makes you smarter. And teaches you how to study things you enjoy. And teaches about friendly competition. The other day I taught my daughter poker. I invited over a friend who is studying with the world’s best poker player so she can be a professional.(training my daughter in all the important skills for life). The three of us played for five straight hours. After each hand we analyzed what we did wrong and what we did right. My friend ended up winning by the end of the day. My daughter came in second! And I came in a distant last. But I learned, and it was fun, and I made friends, and I got closer to my daughter, and I learned (despite 20 years of learning this) more about money management, statistics, psychology, and thinking through problems.Play is the greatest way to learn and to create and to bond. Jus like our hunter-gatherer ancestors did for hundreds of thousands of years, allowing us to survive as a species and then dominate the entire world.G) IDEA SEXTake one idea and take another idea and merge them. This baby idea is brand new in the world. It’s hard to come up with a completely new idea. Idea sex is the key.Examples:My CollegeCard idea above combined credit cards with college students.Google combined search engines with an algorithm for ranking the quality scientific papers.“The Legend of Bagger Vance” (movie starring Matt Damon and Will Smith) combined “The Bhavagad Gita”, a 5,000 year old religious text with….golf.“Star Wars” combined “Flash Gordon”, Taoism, westerns, “The Hidden Fortress”, and “The Hero with a Thousand Faces” with the latest in special effects to create the highest grossing franchise of all time.(Flash Gordon versus Luke Skywalker - both had laser swords and were reluctantly enlisted by a princess to save the universe from the evil empire).Combine a familiar idea with a new idea. Don’t just do a copy of a familiar idea. Then you will have a Me-Too business instead of a vision.Don’t be the person with a Me-Too. Be the person with Meaning.——-This is not advice specific to business. My 20 year old self needed a lot of help.He was like a burn victim that needed bandages and surgeries and to deal with a lot of pain and therapy. You don’t need to learn accounting. You don’t need to learn about Photoshop and website design. You don’t need to learn about marketing because the science of marketing changes every year. But you do need to learn all of the above. Or you won’t be able to handle the roller coaster of business. And business is a microcosm of life. You won’t be able to be the potential YOU, that you are meant to be.Again: don’t be Me-Too. Be Meaning.Good luck, my young 20 year old self.
