Should I become a welder or an electrician?

I became both. I started out as an apprentice at an electrical contractor at 16 before I was out of high school. Employment rules were looser then. I worked the night shift at industrial plants doing downtime maintenance and construction and attended high school classes during the day. During the summer I worked full time. After graduation , I switched to working during the day and attended college classes at night 4 nights a week. After getting my journeyman’s license, I kept on taking classes for over 20 years in a lot of different subjects: drafting, computer programming, engineering, math through calculus and matrix algebra, electrical technology, physics, chemistry. By the time I was 27, I had a couple of degrees, bought the company I trained at and at one time employed 24 electricians, 20 apprentices and half a dozen support personnel. At 44 I decided I was tired of that carrier so I sold my company and took a job as a network engineer at a medical software startup company right before the Y2K mess. I worked there 10 years, the company sold and I broke off on my own again. Then I decided to go back to school and took 2 years welding courses, earned an AAS degree, passed AWS certifications in SMAW, GMAW and GTAW. I liked going to school in my 60’s so I took two more years of classes and earned another AAS in collision repair and refinishing. Not that I ever intend upon working as either a welder or an auto body technician but I have a home machine shop and do auto restoration as a hobby. You might say I’m a skill collector. As a career both welding and electrician have a lot going for them. If I had to do it over again, I”d probably pick electrician again but it’s nice knowing both.
