Internal Revenue Service (IRS): How should I do my taxes as a contractor?

First of all, you don't need a W-9 from someone for whom you are working as an independent contractor; it's the other way around. You must provide a W-9 to anyone from whom you are receiving income that must be reported to the IRS on an information return. See Instructions for the Requester of Form W-9 (01/2011).Payments of $600 or more made to an independent contractor for services provided in the course of a trade or business are reported to the contractor on Form 1099-MISC. If you're not performing your side job for someone conducting a trade or business they generally don't have to give you a 1099-MISC; see the Instructions for Form 1099-MISC (2013). That does not mean that you don't have to report the income you receive - you are still receiving it as compensation for services rendered. You report the income from the side jobs you perform on Schedule C. On Line 11 of Schedule C you can deduct the amounts that you pay to your contract labor. Note that you will have to receive a W-9 from your contractors, and provide them with Form 1099-MISC, if you pay any one of them $600 or more.Your state may require you to register with the state and pay other fees for licensing, etc., if you are conducting a trade or business within that state. The definition of "conducting business" can be a bit tricky; you might want to consult with a lawyer who specializes in working with small businesses.

What are some examples of unintended negative consequences that result from diversity and inclusion policies?

I got screwed by the USA’s IRS due to the Federal Government’s diversity and inclusion policies. Was told that was the problem by the agency’s supervisors and field agents that looked into my problem then tried to sort it out.It started off in 2002 when I received 3 refund checks for the additional self-employment tax I paid when filing in 1997, ‘98 and ‘99. I would call their office in Austin, Texas and tell the agent what my call was about only to have to that over and over as the lazy Blacks transferred me to someone else that did the same. I finally figured out that by calling the wrong number the agent would transfer me to the right department’s supervisor as requested. The supervisor I reached was a professional Black woman that apologized for the agency and said they’re doing their best to get rid of those do-nothing nitwits. Then she gave me her direct phone number and email so we could bypass those fools. Got a call from her a few days later telling me to cash the checks since it would cost the agency more money than their sum total to figure out how that happened. She figured that a ignorant new hire was tasked to audit my returns and mashed enough wrong buttons on their keyboard to send me three refunds. I asked here to send that OK in writing in the mail which she did so I deposited the refunds to have a record of those along with her letter on IRS stationary.I kept paying my taxes until 2008 after I got a nasty dose of mixed-mold mycotoxicosis (toxic mold infestations) in December of 2007. I couldn’t work since it turned me into a zombie that was half brain dead so chose to keep my available funds in the bank to meet expenses and didn’t bother to file since I now couldn’t comprehend the instructions. I did get a notice about failing to file where I told them about my illness. The IRS would send me their usual letters about what they figured I owed plus interest and the SSI their annual letter showing my past contributions and what to expect to receive when I retired. Then in 2011 I noticed that the SSI letter now showed zero contributions for years 1997, 98 and 99 plus 2001 thru 2006. I sent in copies of those returns along with copies of my bank statements showing my payments to the IRS. Got a letter back saying I needed to use original forms when filing late returns! So I called the IRS only to get the same run-around until I remembered my past tactic. Tried that and got a supervisor that transferred my call to someone else that transferred me to some other nimrod that did the same where I was put on indefinite hold until my call was dropped. I finally remembered having the one supervisor’s email so tried that and got a response from her. She was now working in a different department yet went thru the trouble to get some field agents from their local office to come by my house to look at my records. They did and used their laptops thru my landline to see what the IRS had on record. They showed me that the IRS had no record whatsoever of my returns for those years and told me to hire a good tax lawyer to get that straightened out. They said what I experienced had become a common problem due to lazy workers deleting returns to avoid inspecting them for math errors and unqualified deductions. Went to my bank’s loan officer and her lawyer husband for advice only to be told I couldn’t afford to sue the IRS in court even with the best tax lawyer in the land, so my best option was regain my health fast so I could get back to work and paying in SSI contributions again. That didn’t happen until late 2018 when I was healthy enough to seek work but found nothing due to my age and having being stricken with an odd illness that medical science has no cure for. I filed for SSI only to get $1032 per month thanks to the idiots at the IRS deleting 9 years of major contributions to SSI.In March of 2017 I found a buyer for my house which had an IRS tax lien on it for the 2007 taxes. I had to file the tax forms for years 2007 thru 2017 before they would accept payment for the lien at closing. Went thru the same nonsense having my calls to the IRS shuffled around when I called to obtain the required forms. Finally got a Hispanic lady in a different department that repeated what the Black female supervisor told me in 2002. She went ahead and got me lined up with the forms I needed and said all should arrive about the same time from 4 different locations. They came dribbling in over the next two months where I had to call them back three times to get forms that were left out. Got those filled out ASAP and sent to a California office with a sheet stating the title company handling the closing so they could contact them beforehand on where to send the lien payment. I supposedly was to be able to track it’s progress once at that office yet didn’t hear anything nor see anything about it online for the next three months. My buyer was getting antsy so I emailed the Hispanic lady who promptly called me back. She pulled up my case to inform me that all was OK and she would send an email to the title company while we were on the phone. We gabbed for awhile until I got an email from the title company around 20 minutes later saying they were now ready to set a closing date. Turned out she asked them to notify me ASAP which they did.
