Can soldiers wear their uniforms when not on active duty?

As others mentioned, reservists and guardsmen wear their uniforms and they aren’t on active duty. But I suspect that’s not what you are asking. I think you are asking if I, as an active duty Soldier, can wear my uniform elsewhere.Sort of yes, sort of no.The Army uniform is generally allowed but Army Regulation 670–1 does specify the following exceptions.AR 670–1, para 3–7(k):“k. Wearing Army uniforms is prohibited in the following situations:(1) In connection with the furtherance of any political or commercial interests, or when engaged in off duty civilian employment.(2) When participating in public speeches, interviews, picket lines, marches, rallies, or public demonstrations, except as authorized by the first O–5 in the chain of command.(3) When attending any meeting or event that is a function of, or is sponsored by, an extremist organization.(4) When wearing the uniform would bring discredit upon the Army, as determined by the commander.(5) When specifically prohibited by Army regulations.”Those rules aside many consider it to be in bad taste to wear it out and about. Many installation commanders will prohibit the wear of the uniform off post beyond certain basic exceptions.

What do you think of Donald Trump making fun of Lieutenant Colonel Vindman for wearing his military uniform while he testifies in the public impeachment inquiry in the House?

What do you think of Donald Trump making fun of Lieutenant Colonel Vindman for wearing his military uniform while he testifies in the public impeachment inquiry in the House?Roland Temmerman's answer is excellent as usual, but instead of adding a long comment to his answer, I decided to make my own answer to the question.About Lt. Col. Alexander VindmanVindman commissioned into the Army in January 1999 after graduating with a bachelor’s degree from Binghamton University, in New York, according to personnel information provided to Army Times by service officials. He originally joined the infantry branch, serving in South Korea and Germany before deploying to Iraq in September 2004 through September 2005. He was wounded by an improvised explosive device while there in October 2004, but served out the rest of the deployment. In 2008, Vindman became a foreign area officer for the Army. He served in this role at U.S. embassies in Kiev, Ukraine and Moscow. He also earned a graduate degree from Harvard University around this time.At one point, he served in Washington, D.C., as a political-military affairs officer for Russia under the chairman of the Joint Chiefs. While there, he said he authored the principle strategy for managing competition with Russia. The Army confirmed that prior to his current duties, he served on the Joint Staff at the Pentagon from September 2015 to July 2018.In the summer of 2018, he moved to the National Security Council in the White House.Vindman has earned the Ranger Tab, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Expert Infantryman Badge and the Parachutist Badge. In addition to the Purple Heart, Vindman’s awards include two Defense Meritorious Service Medals; four Army Commendation Medals; three Army Achievement Medals; four Overseas Service Ribbons; a Valorous Unit Award; the National Intelligence Meritorious Unit Citation, the Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation; the Presidential Service Badge; the Joint Chiefs of Staff identification Badge and a Navy Unit Commendation.Purple Heart, Ranger tab, FAO: Meet the Army officer testifying about Trump’s Ukraine callAs to Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman's uniform being worn at the hearings. The implication from the president and congressional Republicans is seemingly that Vindman, an Iraq War combat veteran and active duty Army officer, has used his dress uniform as a prop as part of a partisan performance. But Army regulations state that "when an invitation calls for business attire, the appropriate Army uniform is the service or dress uniform." The regulations further state: "All personnel will wear an Army uniform when on duty, unless granted an exception by the commander to wear civilian clothes."In short, Vindman has been following US military protocol, and it would be a violation of Army regulations for him to show up to congressional hearings out of uniform.Trump and Republicans zero in on decorated Army officer Alexander Vindman wearing his military uniform to impeachment hearingsSince the only accolades the president has ever received are the ones he awards to himself, the president is jealous that he only has what looks like one suit and a too long red tie. Next he will want an uniform with a lot of gold braid and fake medals.

Can soldiers wear uniforms off duty?

Yes, but most active duty posts have rules as to when and what uniform you are allowed to wear. For the majority of US Army soldiers, the Army Combat Uniform is the daily duty uniform (the camouflage uniform). It is worn on and off post while grabbing some groceries, eating lunch, getting gas. Maybe even a happy hour on a Friday evening or a high school sporting event. But there are often places where wearing the camouflage duty uniform is not allowed by installation regulations, like strip clubs, social events, hanging out at local bars, etc.For these events, the Army Service Uniform (with or without blouse, with or without tie) is equivalent to a business suit or business casual. There is almost no restriction as to when you can wear the Army Service Uniform (once called “Dress Greens”). But you’d seem out of place all dressed up.Army regulations do limit some events like political rallies, and other events where your appearance in uniform may be construed as an endorsement by the United States Army.Army Regulations also prohibit wearing any uniform at places that center upon the selling of alcohol. If the establishment serves food and alcohol, you can wear the uniform there as long as your presence there does not center on the drinking of alcohol. Like eating at a local bar & grill. There are also off duty activities that wearing any uniform would be weird, like surfing, scuba diving, skiing, bowling, backyard barbecuing, etc.

Feedbacks from Our Clients

CocoDoc is easy to use. It is light weight and is straight forward. I like the ability to quickly create documents and send out for e-signature. But this is not the best one. If you want only basic signature capabilities, this is good.
