PDF Editor FAQ
What's the best way to emigrate with my pets to Costa Rica?
In order to bring pets to Costa rica Your dog or cat must have up-to-date vaccinations against rabies and leptospirosis . You must have certificates of the vaccinations from the veterinarian. Your dog or cat must be examined by a USDA accredited veterinarian, who must fill out Federal APHIS Form 7001 declaring that your pet is healthy.
How can I travel with a dog from US to Europe and return to US?
It is difficult. Avoid any UK arrival or connection…London, Scotland, unless you want your dog quarantined for 6 months on your dime. If you connect thru the above places you run the chance of the same. Not sure if yours is a support dog but advise airline ahead of time as they might not allow support dogs in cabin, if they do, dog might need to be in an airline approved container, even though it totally denies the reason for a support dog, but check with airline. If you do not have a support dog, most airlines limit two (2) domestic animals per cabin, but some limit it to one (1) per cabin. You will need to pay an excess baggage fee which depending on the airline, could cost between $150 to $300 each way. Support dogs travelling on US flag carriers (and boarding internationally from USA to Europe) do not get charged a pet fee and a dog/cat can go with you onboard in your lap. Unless your trip to Europe initiates in Canada please avoid any Canadian airline or Canadian connections; same for Mexico. Unless you connect is in the USA and the international flight from USA to Europe is on an American flag any other carrier will not accept your support animal to in cabin, neither will it go for free down below in cargo. AC (Air Canada) for example does not recognize support dogs and, therefore, if they must allow a dog in cabin, it need managerial approval and it will to be in an airline approved kennel the entire flight, plus it will cost you about $300 each way. Canada does not have an Emotional Support Law so at all costs, take a nonstop flight from the States to your final destination in Europe, because if you connect in Canada (or Mexico) on your way to Europe, you need another vet certificate from a local (connection city) vet, (in addition to the American one) as well as an authentication from the local DA / Agriculture Department; Canada makes you do this, so don’t tempt fate. Support Animals on Board is a US Federal law, not an International one so don’t expect NON-US carriers outside of the US to abide by unless a NON-US aircraft is boarding in the USA and flying nonstop to your European foreign destination. Beware of codeshare flights; if the aircraft is NOT an American flag one and your are NOT boarding in the USA, forget it….!Make sure dog has the required vaccinations per country of entry requirements, and that is healthy and flea free. For entry into the EC dog must be microchipped, so if your animal is not get it done asap, and keep chip information in a safe place. Once dog/cat has required shots, microchip etc, go to a vet familiar with Pet International Travel. If he/she is they will download the EC International Pet Travel Certificate also called the The APHIS Vet Health Certificate (Form 7001) for International Pet Transport, otherwise some will request you to print it yourself and bring it in; I would avoid those. There is a section in the form for you to complete and another for the vet. At times vet will call closest USDA office during the visit just to confirm where the information is to be entered as the form is confusing. If certificate is sent to DA with incorrectly placed info, it will be returned unstamped and chances are, you will miss your flight because this. Certain countries also ask that once the USDA certificate is completed by vet, that it be authenticated by their nearest consulate; check with consulate to make sure this is required.Send vet certificate to nearest DA office unless there is one near you. Once authenticated by DA have them send paperwork via prepaid Fedex label to nearest consulate also requesting their authentication if required. Instruct consulate as of the urgency so that once they are done with it they sent docs back to you (via Fedex as well) and why do you say? Because certain countries have a 10 day certificate validity, between the date signed on the APHIS form by vet, the DA office authenticating it, and the consulate doing their thing. So …..no more than 10 days should elapse between vet sign off, DA & consulate sign off and arrival in Europe, Otherwise authentications become null and void after 10 days. When your city does not have a DA office (like mine… Phoenix, AZ) you have to FEDEX your docs to the nearest DA office (Albuquerque, New Mexico was the nearest for me) ask them to authenticate the vet docs, then to send all via prepaid Fedex to the appropriate consulate. I provide USDA with the consulate’s address & tel. nr. in writing, the consulate did their thing and they Fedex it all back to me.Enclose prepaid Fedex labels for DA office and consulate (if needed) so they can send all to you. Enclose clear written instructions where to mail docs to, and make sure all entities are aware of your 10 day deadline. Mind the Fedex transit time, the DA and consular turn around times, and possible HOLIDAYS not just in the USA but also in the country of your arrival. Consulates tend to close on THEIR own country holidays too check this, use Fedex prepaid labels (not USPS) otherwise you will not get your papers in time. Of course no such expense necessary if your city has both a DA office and a consulate, still you are required to present the paperwork for authentication no matter what. You can go in person but you need to schedule ahead of time for the DA office, and the consulate most likely too… it depends on the consulate, so call ahead. The DA also charges you for the authentication, I belive i is 20 or 30 bucks..not quite sure; you can send them a personal check. If you are going to use Fedex but are a bit confused on how to set up an account to print your own prepaid labels, call their Customer Service and they will help you set it up online for free. They will also instruct you on how to do the labels…quite easy. The cost of each shipment (pre-paid label) is automatically deducted from the bank account you designate when you open the Fedex online account.I had to go thru all this but these were Portugal’s pet entry requirements and most countries have similar requests. Some more, some less, but once you decide where you are going, start checking stuff online and contact the consulate (s) and start preparing…. not just you, but your dog as well. I almost forgot to state that I also had to advise the Board of Vet Services at Lisbon Airport (via email) no later than 48 hours before arrival, that I would be bringing a dog in “X”- amount of hours; not sure if any other country would require a similar step, but Portugal does. They replied right away and I had to further provide them with copies of my documents. If you ever visit Portugal, this is their contact information as it was hard to obtain, so if travelling with a pet in cabin to Portugal here you go:Posto de Inspeção Fronteiriço de Lisboa / Ponto de Entrada do Viajante, [email protected] +351 919551607 or +351 218492434, http://www.dgav.pt.Once you send all docs to the above just make sure you get a confirmation from them that all was received and that nothing else is pending. Upon arrival, before going thru Customs, dog need to visit vet on duty at the “Posto de Inspecao”, or the Inspection Post; near the baggage arrival carrousels. Quick check and off you go thru Customs. They loved my dog and just played with him before setting me free with a wave.As you see this was quite involved, stressful, costly plus I had to organizing things months before! Quite a nightmare but I had to go thru this because I was going to be for away for 4 months. It would cost over US$4,000 to kennel my dog, and anyway, I was NOT going to leave him caged up for so long. Furthermore, having my dog here in Europe is fantastic -he loves it and so do I!As for my return to AZ, I need to go to a local vet and get an EU Pet Passport; yes, you read it right. With one of these the pet can travel all over the EC, and USA will accept as well. Although Portugal is a rabies free country and all that is needed to re-enter the USA is a valid rabies certificate, the visit to a local vet will attest and confirm my doggie is fit to travel, has all shots, vet puts it in a paper doc and voila! I advise airline ahead of time that I will be travelling with a support pet, and that is it; thankfully!Good luck on your travels thru Europe with your dog; I hope all goes smoothly for you.
What are the regulations regarding having a hedgehog as a pet in Texas?
Quora required LINK: Are hedgehogs legal in my state? — Hamor Hollow Hedgehogs .This answer sponsored by Spike, an African Pygmy Hedgehog that permits me to feed and house him In Texas/THE SHORT ANSWER ~ Hedgehogs are legal in all of New England and most of the United States. Unfortunately, hedgehogs are still illegal or restricted in:CaliforniaGeorgiaHawaiiPennsylvaniaThe Five Boroughs of New York CityHedgehogs may require a permit and/or certificate of veterinary inspection in:New JerseyWisconsinRECENTLY LEGALIZED OR UNRESTRICTEDArizonaMaineWashington, DC (Fairfax County, Virginia)WyomingTHE LONG ANSWERHedgehogs are usually considered an exotic animal and may be classified invasive or dangerous in some areas. Many times this is due to local lawmakers misclassifying hedgehogs as the wrong species or simply not understanding what a hedgehog is.Please be aware that misclassification is not a magical loophole and legal possession of a hedgehog is ultimately decided and enforced by local law enforcement. This may be a city or town police department, county sheriff's office, state department of fish and wildlife, or the US Fish and Wildlife Service.ARIZONAUnrestricted: 05-Dec-2015Updated: Mon 08-Apr-2019Per Arizona Game and Fish Department:The Arizona Game and Fish Department, as part of its regular five-year review rulemaking process, has updated its Article 4 (Live Wildlife) rules. The new provisions will be effective Dec. 5, 2015.The updated rules were recently approved by the Governor’s Regulatory Review Council. The new provisions include some notable changes including:• Removal of hedgehogs from the restricted live wildlife list to allow them as pets.• Expansion of the restricted primate species that can be possessed by private individuals without a special license, to include all non-human primates in an effort to protect public health and safety.• Prohibiting a person from allowing native desert tortoises to reproduce in captivity in an effort to reduce the number of unwanted captive desert tortoises.• Improved consistency between federal and state rules, for example listing all birds under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act as restricted live wildlife.• Inclusion of red shiner, certain species of tilapia, paddlefish, sturgeon, Chinese mystery snail, and false dark mussel as restricted live wildlife as all are non-native to Arizona and pose significant threat to native species.• Clarification of definitions and language, consolidation of some rules, and updating of references.CALIFORNIAIllegal/RestrictedUpdated: Sun 07-Apr-2019Per the California Department of Fish and Wildlife:There are at least 17 known species of hedgehogs. All species are restricted from possession as pets in California primarily because they can become pests where introduced into the wild where they don’t naturally occur. There are also many unknown questions related to natural predators and potential diseases when any non-native animal is introduced into the wild. If personal ownership were possible for hedgehog species, it's likely that there would be similar requests for many other non-native species, putting California’s rich wildlife diversity at risk. Why can't I have a hedgehog, sugar glider, ferret, or other restricted, non-native species as a pet in California?RESTRICTED SPECIES LAWS AND REGULATIONS – IMPORTATION, TRANSPORTATION AND POSSESSION OF WILD ANIMALS – MANUAL 671GEORGIAIllegal/RestrictedUpdated: Mon 08-Apr-2019Per Georgia Department of Natural Resources Law Enforcement Division:The animals listed below are examples of the exotic species regulated under Georgia Law. The exotic species listed below, except where otherwise noted, may not be held as pets in Georgia. This list is not all inclusive.• Insectivores (shrews, moles, hedgehogs, tenrecs, etc.); all species .We at Hamor Hollow are erring on the side of caution by listing hedgehogs as Illegal/Restricted in Georgia. In our opinion, hedgehogs still being listed on Georgia’s Wild Animals/Exotics list outweighs the current effort to legalize them through 2013 House Bill 780, 2015 House Bill 273, 2015 Senate Bill 180, and 2017 Senate Bill 21.We applaud the legalization effort in Georgia and hope to see them fully-legalized soon!HAWAIIIllegal/RestrictedUpdated: Mon 08-Apr-2019Per State of Hawaii Plant Industry Division:IMPORTING NON-DOMESTICATED ANIMALSSome non-domesticated animals are allowed to be imported to Hawaii. Brakey by a 6th grader from Elm Street Elementary School in Mechanic Falls who wanted the ability to have a hedgehog as a pet without having to jump through hoops and obtain multiple licenses, as you can in every other New England state. Now that hedgehogs have been added to the unrestricted animal list, licenses are no longer required for ownership.“I’m really glad this issue could be resolved for these students without the need for further legislation,” said Sen. Brakey. “This whole experience has been a great learning opportunity for the entire Elm Street Elementary School’s 6th grade class. They were involved in the process from the very beginning, traveling to Augusta back in February for the day to testify at the public hearing for LD 35. I have since been in touch with the class to let them know that because of their initiative, we were able to make positive changes in Augusta.”128th MAINE LEGISLATURE — LD 35 — LR 938(01) — Resolve, To Allow the Unlicensed Ownership of Hedgehogs as PetsSP0014 — LD 35 — LR 938 Item 1 — Resolve, To Allow the Unlicensed Ownership of Hedgehogs as PetsNEW JERSEYUpdated: Mon 08-Apr-2019Many breeders and Wikipedia list hedgehogs as requiring a permit in New Jersey but do not cite a source. The reasoning for such a disallowance by the Commission is that they’re not native to Pennsylvania and could compete for food or cover if they were to be released or escape into the wild. Be that as it may, almost every other state in the nation allows these harmless tiny creatures to be kept as pets similar to a gerbil, hamster, etc. I believe that it is time to end this unnecessary prohibition.Introduced as House Bill 1273.House Bill 1273 was defeated per Pennsylvania General Assembly:An Act amending Title 34 (Game) of the Pennsylvania Consolidated Statutes, in permits relating to wildlife, further providing for definitions. Third consideration and defeated on final passage, May 23, 2018 (71-120)We at Hamor Hollow are erring on the side of caution by listing hedgehogs as Illegal/Restricted in Pennsylvania. In our opinion the defeat of House Bill 1273 outweighs any previously-debated grandfathered possession loopholes relating to the amendment of § 137.1 in 1992.Per The Pennsylvania Code:§ 137.1. Importation, possession, sale and release of certain wildlife.(a) Unless otherwise provided in this section or the act, it is unlawful for a person to import, possess, sell, offer for sale or release within this Commonwealth the following wild animals or wild birds or the eggs of the birds or a crossbreed or hybrid of the wild animals or wild birds, which are similar in appearance:(11) Game or wild held captive. This means they can be kept as household pets without any special permissions.Previously, hedgehogs were prohibited while chinchillas and hermit crabs required a special permit from the Board of Zoning Appeals. The county made the change because hedgehogs have become popular, and zoning officials said they have received an increasing number of inquiries about whether it was allowable to keep them as pets.Fairfax joins Arlington and Loudoun counties as jurisdictions in Northern Virginia that permit hedgehogs.WISCONSINRequires certificate of veterinary inspection (CVI)Updated: Mon 08-Apr-2019Per State of Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection:A "household pet" is an animal from a traditional companion animal species: dog, domestic cat, ferret, hedgehog, pet bird, rabbit, or domestic rodent (gerbil, guinea pig, hamster, or domestic mouse or rat).
