The ML 350 jeep Uni-body dates back to 1997 when Mercedes & Chrysler had a business relation. Until a couples of years the JEEP/ Durango had the same platform as the ML 350. When Benz bought Chrysler they did not have any platform to build a SUV. The Durango JEEP Cherokee platform was the only one available and Mercedes used it in 1997 to manufacture the ML that was never a German Production. It was manufactured in Vance Alabama the USA Mercedes Plant on that platform and until 2014 the ML or GL was built on a JEEP Durango Chrysler platform and many other components and vice versa the Durango was a Cheap ML SUV Mercedes by design and components .Compairing the heavy duty Jeep Durango Mercedes ML platform against the Toyota Highlander world wide known is a tough deal to compare.Mercedes has the advantage on the Jeep ML Durango platform as it is possibly more heavy duty. Mercedes has also a better design engine and a tough one ; The Mercedes transmission was a ZF German transmission now a Mercedes transmission.The best in the world…The only negative point is the Vance Alabama poor record on the ML assembly troubles over the years that are still present as a US SUV Mercedes.Toyota record does not have such a glory background. However in Africa, Middle east, South America the Toyota Highlander and Prado are the Mercedes of the SUV as the ML Mercedes is not very much exported and present. You must remember that the ML is only assembled in the USA, some in Austria or Germany and now in China.I live in a few countries one is China , another is in South America and North America partially.I personally prefer the Mercedes as I work around the German products everyday. The direct competition is by BMW X5, the Audi Q5 and the Toyotas Highlander and Prado.This is a very tough call as the Toyotas are the Mercedes world wide as there are a first class product with only few ML SUV Mercedes. The Volvo XC60 and the Land Rover are also a strong present competition.I would buy a Toyota Prado or Highlander if the price was better than a Mercedes with the same mileage, Both the Toyotas and the Mercedes are good for 450,000 Miles at the minimum if maintained correctly. Their reputation is beyond compare as the best of the best in Africa, South America, China and Middle East.The Mercedes ML-GL is a extended version of the former ML Frame that was originally based on the the Chrysler Durango ,"96% intact" AMC design.” This was in no small part thanks to the use of existing AMC engineering. Dealership and web state this is a common problem with this model of the car and the eis and esl switches need to be removed and replaced.Ordinary day at my job, got off and went to my car and put the key in lights in the instrument cluster came on and message was " remove the key" turn the key to accessory nothing happens, turn it all the way to start the ignition nothing happens, the vehicle is stuck in park and there is no way to move the shifter. After a research online and few phone calls I found out that this is a very common problem among Mercedes vehicles. I took it to the dealer they did diagnose it for steering wheel lock and quoted me $1,300 for repairs. I do believe this should be a recall or at lease Mercedes-Benz of usa take it's part and reimburse the parts since it's a very common problem.
