What cheeky ingenuity have military personnel shown to get around the rules?
Private BathroomI wouldn’t say this was so much getting around the rules, but when we went to the ranges for gunnery in Korea, it is a month long affair. We set up a “tent city” on concrete pads at the range complex. But next to the range complex we have some facilities like bathrooms, showers, some laundry rooms, etc. The bathrooms, with a whole Cavalry Squadron there for a month can get a little tore up and a lot of toilets go down, and despite the fact troops clean them each morning, they can become a total mess. My first gunnery there though, our commander got the bright idea, during the winter, we would do a “tactical gunnery” so we parked out on a location away from the complex put out the wire, and froze our asses off, but we did spend most of our days and some nights sleeping in our vehicles at the more plush complex. So after my first trip to this disaster area I decided to be smart and have a luxury. This time we actually stayed at “tent city.” On the first day, and my first trip to the bathrooms, I sat down in one of the stalls. I pulled out a piece of paper, wrote, “Out of Order” on it, and when I left the stall I taped it to the door. For a month at gunnery I had my own, private, clean stall to do my business in. Only once did someone come in to try and fix it and remove my sign. I just made a new one the next time I had to go.It’s the little things!Oh, and that was my first Bradley gunnery as a gunner. I also went to the E-5 promotion board during that gunnery. I got my recommendation for promotion, and also shot a 10 “T” perfect gunnery. I would like to think my ingenuity for a little comfort in life helped out just a bit!SchoolsI had an E-6. Great guy. He had his parachutist badge and his air assault badge. Then went to jumpmaster school. The one school all of us combat MOS personnel covet, or used to anyway, especially NCO’s is Pathfinder school. You get a cool little badge that those outside combat mos’s or those that don’t work close to them don’t see a whole lot…It isn’t surprising that this school is hard to get and people will even re-enlist for a slot. Well, this one E-6 couldn’t get a slot and he knew he was not in the “good ole boys,” club where he could get priority. So, one time he goes off on leave and comes back. A couple of weeks after coming back from leave he gets orders for his Pathfinder badge. Everyone is like, WTF!Well. It turns out he had saved up almost 90 days worth of leave and had to use it before he lost it. When he was planning his leave he checked around to see where Pathfinder schools were being held an when. So when he went on leave he showed up at a different base, with equipment from the school packing list and managed to get himself in on a standby slot when someone else was booted on the first day for not coming with all the required equipment. He went on leave, went to the school to earn his badge, still had time for some vacation, and pissed of and made other NCO’s jealous when he came back! Good show!
What are some backhanded compliments you have received?
I recently attended Army Air Assault school, where you get to do a bunch of cool things, one of which is rappelling out of a helicopter. The final task before graduation, one of the most physical parts of the course, requires a 12 mile ruck march with a 35 pound pack. Everyone carries the same amount of weight, because everyone gets a standardized packing list. Out of a class nearly 200 people in size, I was one of maybe 6–8 females total.Despite being the “weaker sex” (direct quote from one of the dudes there, who said women shouldn’t be allowed to do combat arms because they aren’t fit for it), I managed to beat the vast majority of the males there. The surprised looks on their faces (and blowing by the guy who wanted women out of combat roles) really motivated me to keep going until I reached the front. I got a lot of comments dealing with the fact that I was a fit female; some pleasant (“you got a lot of drive in those legs, girl!”), some in friendly competition (“no way I’m gonna let a girl beat me!”, but said with a smile and a tone that conveyed a positive attitude rather than a nasty one), and some incredibly backhanded. The most backhanded compliment came from behind me as I passed someone. “You’re pretty fast…” I heard, knowing what was coming next. I silently begged him not to say it. “….for a girl,” he concluded. OY VEY - he said it. I turned around, and while walking backward said, “Well, I like to think I’m fast for anyone, but thanks!” then took off at a run and passed several more people.
