What is your review of Sex Education (Netflix TV Series)?

Movies and TV shows, at their cores, are an attempt to cajole the viewer’s emotions. Various genres allow for the stimulation of contrasting emotions; happiness, excitement, inspiration, terror, relief, and a host of others.Depending on one’s frame of mind, we seek programming that triggers a specific emotion. If you’re feeling sad, you will likely seek out comedies (i.e. happiness), if you want excitement, there’s the action genre. Sometimes, you want a good cry, and you will watch The Notebook. However, more often than not, we are on the hunt to trigger positive emotions, and there is one particular, somewhat muddled and ambiguous genre that deals in this realm – the ‘feel-good’ movie/show. It’s a hard nut to crack. One would suspect that comedies are the best bet, but that’s often not the case. 20-minute sitcoms are far too consumed with squeezing in ‘X’ number of jokes and aren’t wholly fixated on creating those ‘warm and fuzzy’ moments, a staple of the ‘feel-good’ genre.Further, different people will have different interpretations of what ‘feel-good’ programming constitutes. There are other factors at play, but I sense this is already running too long so I’ll get back to the point of this post.I have been on a perpetual quest to discover and devour every piece of ‘feel-good’ programming out there; movies and TV shows I can watch curled up in my blanket, and soak in the sense of warmth they provide. Parks and Recreation, Chuck, Happy Endings, Lovesick (previously Scrotal Recall) Midnight in Paris, The Princess Bride, The Intouchables, the list goes on.However, it’s been a while since my last fix, so to speak. Imagine my surprise then, that I found it on a show called ‘Sex Education,’ a name that utterly belies its nature and its tender, beating heart. This is a remarkable show. This is how IMDB describes it, “Otis, a teenage boy with a sex therapist mother teams up with his high school classmate Maeve to set up an underground sex therapy clinic at school,” There is a lot more going on. Netflix marketed this as a comedy about teenagers having sex and the trials and tribulations accompanying it. And while that isn’t necessarily inaccurate, it merely touches upon the surface level mechanics of ‘Sex Education.’The writing elevates this show to the upper echelons. A lesser show would have milked the premise to death and churned out ‘Sexual problem of the week’ episodes, but the writers here are operating on a higher plane. All the characters are imbued with authentic, relatable characteristics and are handled with respect. Otis’ (Asa Butterfield) relationship with his best friend Eric (Ncuti Gatwa) is a sweet yet realistic representation of such a relationship. Ditto for his love/tolerate relationship with his mother (Gillian Anderson, having the time of her life). Then there’s Maeve Wiley (Emma Mackey), but we will get to her later. While the primary cast of characters go through funny, heartfelt and in some cases, heartbreaking arcs throughout the 8-episode season, it’s the care with which the ancillary characters are written that allows the show to scale great heights.‘Sex Education’ revels in shattering stereotypes. The bully is internally tortured, the jock has anxiety issues, the ditzy blonde has a heart of gold, and the outcast badass girl (Maeve) is the sharpest, kindest person around. There is diversification to be found here too, but none of it feels shoehorned. This is a funny comedy, a profound drama, a refreshing rom-com and a coming of age story, all bundled up in one delightful package. The show also deals with some heavy topics but does so with grace and a deft lightness of touch; a laugh is never too far away. There are exceptional moments sprinkled throughout. Moments that will make you laugh, moments that will tug at your heartstrings and moments that will outright make you weep. By the end of the eight episodes, it’s virtually inconceivable to not fall in love with this world and its characters. The location certainly doesn’t hurt. Shot in Wales, ‘Sex Education’ is set in a nameless British town. And this place is the idyllic-est idyllic town to ever idyll.Lastly, there‘s Maeve. Played by Emma Mackey, Maeve Wiley is one of the most well written, well-executed characters I have encountered for a while, male, female or otherwise. Mackey, in her debut role, is a revelation, what an utterly stunning debut. She is here to stay. In fact, all the actors have done admirable work; Ncuti Gatwa in particular, deserves added commendation. There is so much more I want to get into, but I don’t wish to spoil anything for potential viewers. Although I will say this: If you’re on the hunt for a show, this should be near the top of your list.In its trailer, ‘Sex Education’ is described as ‘An original series about good times, wild times, and the time of your lives’. It is that and so much more.Circling back to the beginning, the emotion to best represent this show would be – pure, unadulterated happiness.

How did Coach.me get its name?

Evan Williams suggested the original name, Lift. Then we pivoted into coaching and purchased the name Coach .me from an entrepreneur who had been sitting on that domain. Below is the story of how we got the name Lift. When I first started writing code, I called the repository lifepoints. That's the true first name of this project. At the time I was thinking about gamifying all aspects of my life. For about a year it was a side project called Mibbles. I was still thinking about gamification and wanted a name that could double as a virtual currency. Mibbles is a mashup of my last name and my partner's last name. We had already been using this word as a relationship currency, "Mibbles if you wash the dishes."That second name is almost universally hated by people who aren't already friends with us as a couple (and even then it doesn't hold up that well). So Ev stepped up with some suggestions. Here's how Ev pitched the Lift name:1) LiftRelevant Definitions:- (verb) raise to a higher position or level- (verb) raise (a person's spirits or confidence); encourage or cheer- (noun) something that is used for lifting- (noun) a feeling of encouragement or increased cheerfulnessSuch a simple, nice-sounding word!Usage: Though a common word, there is no overly dominate product/service/company that owns the word. Number one in Google is the web development framework. There's also a Lift Conference about technology. But nothing related or competitive that I can see.Domains: Ay, there's the rub...but not too bad. Page on Lift redirects (if you put in the www) to Otis Elevator Company. Who knows if it's extractable from there. Surely would take a lot of money. For this particular product, I think living without the .com is worth considering. For one, I think it's mostly going to be a mobile app, but also cuz domains are getting less important. Also, if it's not buyable, at least the domain isn't used at all.Other alternatives:- lift.me which has the "me" connotation (though, I wouldn't like if people called the product "Lift Me"). Definitely worth considering- lift.net is not being used, but I'm sorta aesthetically opposed to .net names.- Add a word: getlift.com is pretty good, but unfortunately being used.- Mispell: You could consider lifft.com or liftt.com. Wouldn't be terrible. (Llift appears to be something.)So that's the story.
