What's the best one day itinerary for visiting Pontianak?

Let's build another itinerary!Of course you can make the most of Pontianak in just one day. But it will largely depends on your personal interests. Pontianak is the largest city of West Kalimantan. Most people go to this province to visit Singkawang (for its culture), Ketapang (for orangutan), and few made it to Putussibau (for secluded nature). And for me? I visited them all."Standing astride the equator, Pontianak is a gateway to all points of the compass. Commerce keeps things buzzing, but the city is otherwise a grey jumble, brightened only by some inexpensive luxury hotels and lukewarm sights." - Lonely PlanetPontianak got its name from a local horror character. Legend said that when Abdurrahman Al-Qadrie arrived on the place, he was disturbed by a female poltergeist, described by locals as Kuntilanak. Al-Qadrie was able to repel the ghost by firing a massive cannon. Later, he decided to establish a city nearby and named it after the ghost.Just like what I wrote in another post about Jakarta (Wirawan Winarto's answer to What's the best one day itinerary for visiting Jakarta?), Here is my suggested itinerary for one-day visit to Pontianak. However, this itinerary assumes that you have a motorcycle or a car to go around.07.00 - Local BreakfastWake up early to start our activities. Even though smaller than Samarinda and Banjarmasin, Pontianak is arguably the most dynamic city with most bustling economy in Kalimantan. No wonder that Pontianak is a city that never sleeps. The good thing, it means you can start your activities early in the morning. One of the most famous breakfast for locals is bubur pedas (spicy porridge). But do not take it literally, because bubur pedas is not so spicy after all. Don't ask me why. I also wonder why they named it so.A bit different from the West Java and North Sulawesi version, the famous porrdige of West Kalimantan is crisp and watery. There are few food stalls selling this kind of porridge in the morning. You just need to grab one and finish it before continuing your journey.07.45 - Dayak CultureBefore eight o'clock, take a ride towards Jalan Ahmad Yani. It takes about fifteen minutes to reach from city centre. The first place you should visit is Museum Provinsi Kalimantan Barat. It opens early at 08.00 and also closes early at around 14.00. As far as I concerned, this is the only museum in Kalimantan that I recommend. The area is spacious, it has wide-range of collections worth seeing, including a handful traditional arts. As per 2013, the entry ticket only costs you Rp 2.000.Pontianak is known to be the home of three major ethnics: Dayak, Melayu, and Chinese. Just outside the museum (well, actually on its backyard), you can observe few replica of Dayak, Melayu, and Chinese structures, such as Melayu traditional houses, Dayak barns, Chinese temples, and a small hut where Dayak people used to store the dead, called sandung.Exploring both of of them should take less than one hour. Now take a walk or ride to an alley next to the museum where you can find Rumah Betang, a traditional Dayak longhouse. Its stairs are made of 'ulin wood', a super strong wood, known as Borneo Ironwood (Eusideroxylon zwageri). Climb the stairs to the top, where you can watch some woodcarving arts made by Dayak people.Dayak is actually an umbrella term. There are two hundreds Dayak ethnics around Kalimantan. The ones who lives in Pontianak are Dayak Kanayatn (Kendayan) and several smaller ethnics. After visiting this place, you might also want to visit Rumah Radakng (link). Rumah Radakng is a massive Dayak longhouse, stretched for 140 meter long! To visit Rumah Radakng, ride to Jalan Sutan Syahrir, three kilometer away from the museum.09.00 - Chinese CultureGo to Alun-Alun Kapuas. No need for sight-seeing, we will have time for that later. Catch a ferry for a Sungai Kapuas river-crossing. Kapuas is Indonesia's longest river. It is stretched for 1.143 kilometer long, starting from Muller Mountain Range to South China Sea. To cross this river, you can always use the bridge, but taking a ferry will give you authentic local experiences. On board, you can observe how locals carry stuffs across the river back and forth.Across the Kapuas, it is busy district called Siantan. There are four or five Chinese temples around this place. You may be interested in visiting one of those temples to feel the dynamic of local Chinese culture. It is a common understanding that Chinese are responsible for the majority of Pontianak's Rp 18 trillion (US$ 1.5 billion) economy. In this temple, for example, there are twelve human-sized statues of twelve Chinese zodiacs. You might be interested to take a quick snap before taking long ride towards Mempawah.10.00 - Forgotten MassacreMempawah is the regency capital of Kabupaten Pontianak. This town can be reached in one and a half hour from Pontianak. In less than two hours, you should be able to reach Mempawah. But before reaching the city, take a right-turn towards Mandor. Mandor is a small village, forgotten by most people, and looks unimportant. But seven decades ago, Mandor was well known as the "Kalimantan killing fields". Japanese once beheaded 21,437 people in a football field (yes! twenty one thousands bodies!).[New York Times - Mystery of Borneo, The Massace Place]If you are a history geek, you may want to visit the mass burial. Sometimes you can still find a broken pieces of samurai laying on the ground.Continue your ride to the West towards Mempawah. Mempawah only has one attraction, Kraton Amantubillah. It is an old sultanate who used to flourish back in 1730's. Now, this palace is managed by local governments and used as the home for sultan's descendants. You can always enter this palace and take a look inside, for free. They exhibit old paintings, sultan's bedrooms, traditional weapons, and some rusty cannons.Ride back to Pontianak, you can stop at several beaches along the way. But keep in mind that the beaches are narrow and rocky. You can also visit one traditional Borneo restaurant for lunch. It serves sotong pangkong and pengkang. Pengkang is a traditional food, contains baked glutinous sticky rice with shrimp inside. I like that one.15.00 - Tugu KhatulistiwaRight before you reach the city, you have to visit Pontianak's number one destination, Tugu Khatulistiwa (literally, Equator Monument). This is inarguably the most famous landmark of Pontianak, a city that is located right on the equator. Tugu Khatulistiwa opens everyday and closes about four thirty in the afternoon. Inside the monument, there is a tiny museum showcasing the history and science behind the monument.A Dutch geographer, in 1928, found Pontianak as the sole 'urban setting' right on the line of the Equator in the world. The monument was built with a Dutch word, Evenaar (means Equator), engraved on the arrow. Annually, shadowless sunlight occurs here, as sun reaches zenith on Vernal Equinox (March 21-23) and Autumnal Equinox (September, 21-23).Save the date so that you can plan your trip accordingly.Little known trivia, Tugu Khatulistiwa is not exactly on the equator. The modern and more accurate calculations have shown that the equator is slightly southwards, located between the monument and river-banks.16.30 - Historical PlacesIt's not over yet. Remember when I told you about that female poltergeist earlier in the article? Legend said that Abdurrahman Al-Qadrie fired the cannon to drive away the ghost. Al-Qadrie later founded his own sultanate on the Kapuas river banks where he met the female ghost. You can still visit the just-restored palace of his sulatanate, that was narcissistically named as Qadriyah Palace (Kraton Kadriyah). The place is a bit difficult to find, but you can always ask locals for directions.Besides Abdurrahman Al-Qadrie, there is one of his descendant who later became nationwide famous. His name is Syarif Abdul Hamid Al-Qadrie or Sultan Hamid II. Sultan Hamid II was knows as the designer of Garuda Pancasila. But his popularity went down the drain after he attempted a coup d'etat against the national government in 1950. Later, his name was forgotten to the most Indonesians. Not too far away from the palace, there is an old mosque, named Masjid Jami Pontianak or Syarif Abdurrahman Mosque. It was a three-century old mosque, built in 1771. Until today, the mosque is still maintained and utilized regularly to accommodate regular Islamic prayers.18.00 - The River TourCross the river via the bridge. If you want to grab some snacks, you may be interested in visiting Alun-Alun Kapuas. Every late afternoon, locals love to gather around the river banks. There are a lot of children's attractions, such as traditional games, bicycling, skateboarding, and many others. Just before sunsets, usually there are people offering their boat service for short cruise along Kapuas. No, not the one pictured below. It's a big boat. The Kapuas river-cruise starts just before sunsets on a motorized boat. On the boat you can purchase some food to eat while having chat with the locals. The boat goes through a short-route, from the Alun-Alun Kapuas, until under the Kapuas Bridge. The bridge itself looks stunning at night, as the colors are changing regularly. From the bridge, the boat will go back to where it departed. It takes about one hour for the cruise, normally it's already dark when you got back. Once you are back, you can hunt for cheap stuffs on Alun-Alun Kapuas. Please remember that the complex can be extremely loud at night, bad music are played repeatedly through massive speakers.20.00 - The NightlifePerhaps you just want some silence and enjoy Pontianak's nightlife? Sure. There are a lot of cafe around Pontianak. You can visit The Roof Cafe, a small cafe located on a rooftop on Jalan Gajah Mada, where you're able to observe Pontianak from above. If you prefer more low-profile closure, you might want to grab the famous pisang goreng, fried banana with variety of toppings.I know that a lot of people thinks, "There is nothing to see in Pontianak."Well, we cannot blame them since Pontianak itself is never marketed as tourism destination. But to think so, is wrong.Just like any other cities in Indonesia, Pontianak has distinct culture that you cannot find in other places. This makes Pontianak possesses its own charms as a visitor's destination. If you have two or three weeks to go to West Kalimantan. I think you should also plan your trip to Singkawang to see the vibrant Chinese culture, Sambas for ancient Malay sultanate, Ketapang for its orangutan sanctuary, Sintang for the beautiful lake, and perhaps Putussibau for the hinterland. But as you only have one day, this is what I can suggest.

At 30, I find myself longing for a boyfriend, but I have no experience whatsoever in dating and physical contact. Are there important things I should consider as I start using dating sites? Should I be honest right away about my lack of experience?

I could write a book about online dating. I have been on almost every dating site there is. Some have even gone out of business over the years. As a woman there are things you should know about dating sites and men and realism.1) You really need to post your photo. Men are visual creatures and like to see what we are gettting into. Also, use photos where you are smiling, doing something natural and not wearing sunglasses. Don't have kids or people who might not want to be displayed on a dating site in the photos. It's ok to have a professional photo but if you use one with all kinds of effects and soft lighting it won't look like you. I have been on many dates where the women are so unlike the photo that I am sure they used someone else's photo. You want to be seen in the best light, but don't be deceptive. And for heaven's sake -- SMILE. If you don't look happy, why would I want to contact you?2) Don't lie about your weight. I can't even begin to tell you how many times I have been on internet dates with "active, fit women" who turn out to be 100 pounds overweight. First of all, do they think I won't notice? Second of all, it makes them liars and no relationship should start that way.3) Be positive. Many ads say things like "I won't date men who..." or "Don't bother to respond if you don't have a job or a car or if you still live with your mom." and so on. It's ok to discriminate -- what you want is totally valid. But you can be positive about it also. It's very off putting to hear so much negativity from a profile - what must she be like in real life?4) State what you want but be realistic. I have a friend who is a counselor and he says if you make a list of the top 10 things you want in a partner and can find someone who has four then you are doing pretty well and if you find someone who has six -- marry her!5) Remember there are no perfect people or situations. We all have baggage and we all have issues. If you are looking for perfection you will fail.6) There are a great deal of married men trolling dating sites. Unless you are into that sort of thing you really need to find out if your date is married. Separated is married by the way, and there's a good chance you will get hurt if you date a man who has been separated for only a short time. Men who are secretive, only allow you to call at the office or certain times, or will only meet far from their hometown are telling you something.7) There are lots of players just looking for sex trolling the sites. Something that seems too good to be true probably is.8) Most men don't want a pen pal. They want to meet, greet and eat. So after you make contact, if he seems interested, have a phone chat and then meet for coffee. Coffee is best because if it doesn't work out you can bail quickly. If things got great you can always move to a restaurant.9) Protect your identity until you are sure who you are dealing with. Use a cell phone number and not a home number when you speak so you can't be traced; never use your real email address if you make off-site contact; never use an easily-figured handle or one from another social media site. Never give your address. Don't give out your full name. Only meet in a public place that is well used by customers. Never go to that place near closing time. Never be reluctant to ask management to walk you to your car after the date if you do not feel comfortable. Do not give up details about where you work or what neighborhood you live in or what stores you frequent until you are comfortable with that person. Trust is earned over time, not granted after one phone call or a cup of coffee. I am absolutely amazed at the risks many women take dating online.10) Always remember that "I don't want to do that" is a good enough excuse for an adult. You don't need a reason for anything. Don't be cajoled, pressured, humored or forced into anything you don't want to do or say.11) Watch for "grooming behavior". Many men are seeking phone sex or e-sex partners for the evening. They will start by casually bringing up sexual topics in a funny or offhand way and then slowly bring the convo around til they are deep into sexual fantasy. If that is not your thing, then make sure he keeps it clean. Grooming can be subtle.12) Have an original thought. Don't be the girl who like "long walks on the beaches and a night in front of the fire". Who doesn't like that? How about being a girl who wants to white water raft the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon or who wants to spend the weekend in Iceland? Now that is someone I want to talk to.13) Mention if you have/like pets or have allergies. If a man has a cat and you are deadly allergic, you need to make that clear up front.14) Don't be too cheap. While it's still expected for the man to pay in most cases, you can offer to pay the tip. And avoid the Chateu Briand and Dom Perignon. We have all had our experiences with "dinner whores" and they are not a joy unless you plan to put out at the end of the evening (which I do not recommend).15) No matter how good the date goes, have restraint. If you plan to meet again, a short hug and a kiss is ok. Groping in the car is extreme and sex in the alley is a no-no. Seriously, I know people are going to tell me I'm a prude and yes every situation is different but the "three dates (at a minimum) before sex" rule is a damn good rule. In GOOD relationships, nothing is ever lost by patience. Lots of things are lost by rushing in. Unless of course all you are after is a quickie, then you can do what you want. Just don't expect another date with that guy, that's all.16) Demand to be treated with respect. Your date should be on time and dressed for the occassion, not in shorts and a ball cap. He should speak civilly and avoid foul language. If he treats you disrespectfully when you first meet how do you think he's going to treat you in six months?17) Be respectful. Be on time; have a smile when you meet and be positive, even if he turns out to be the exact opposite of what you want. You can learn something from anyone and it's only for an hour if you are just having coffee. Dress nicely. Leave the cell phone in your purse. Smile. Say thank you at the end of the evening.18) Watch how he treats the waitstaff and the people around you. If he is rude to them he will be rude to you.19) Don't be too picky. There are lots of good men out there who are a little banged up. Keep an open mind.20) Don't just disappear. One of the most frustrating things about online dating is that people will chat with you for a few emails and it seems to be going well and then they just disappear. "Ghosting" seems to be the in thing, but be bigger. Just say you've met someone you want to explore a relationship or some other respectful thing and then say goodbye. If they don't take it well, DO NOT continue to respond. Things will only get nasty.21) Do NOT fall into the "Grass is Greener" syndrome. One of the biggest problems with online dating for newbies, especially women, is that they are like a kid in a candy store. You will probably get lots of responses from men. If you meet someone nice, who treats you well and you get along with and have interests in common, don't just say, "He's really great but maybe there's someone better!" Stop looking at the dating site and just date for awhile. If you keep chasing the impossible dream you may pass up the right person for someone who doesn't exist except in your dreams. This is the biggest downfall and trap of dating sites. You have to know when to stop and experience the moment, the date, the man and possibly the relationship.22) If you are in doubt, have a second date. If he has no plan when he calls you to make that second date, then trouble ahead! Be wary of men who have no plans and just want to "hang out". But if he has a plan and you have fun then who knows?23) Know your limits and respect yourself. If you don't respect yourself then how do you expect anyone else to respect you?24) Men are NOT mind readers. If you like/dislike him, be honest and move on. It's more painful to be left in the lurch than to know the truth. Trust me on this.25) Make sure a friend knows where you are going and when you plan to be home. Leave a note with any info about your plans either with a friend or on the kitchen table. Its pays to be safe. Have a plan to call your friend to let them know you are ok when the date is over. If they don't hear from you by a certain time they should come looking.26) Be able to hold a conversation. Keep it light. Tell a joke or story. Ask questions. Men can be nervous too and there is nothing more grueling than pulling yes or no answers from someone for an hour.27) If you liked him, let him know the next day. Say you had a good time. Hint that you want another date. Let him be gallant and ask you out or if he paid, suggest that you will pay for the next meal. Nothing gladdens my heart more than a woman who is clear about wanting to go out again.I am certain many people will roll their eyes at many of these suggestions and say I am out of touch or old fashioned or just plain creepy, but I know what I am talking about here. I've been on more dates than I can count and I know what works and what doesn't; I know who will put out on the first date and who is a prude; I know who hates themself and who respects themself. I know who is smart and who is stupid enough to give enough information to google them and learn every single thing about them in ten minutes. I know what is right and wrong and I know that even in these times, whether it's fair or unfair, people expect and respond to certain types of behavior. Things have not changed as much as you might think, not down deep where values count and you want to meet someone you can spend your life with.

What is the cost to travel to Char Dham?

Price for any trip depends onNo of days you have for this tripNo of adults and children are traveling with youTentative Travel DateType of hotels you wanted to book.Price cannot be disclosed on an Internet forum(Chardham Yatra, the Best time to visit May to October)History of ChardhamAn interesting fact about the Chardham Yatra of Uttarakhand is that it is not the first of its name. As surprising as it may sound, the one that takes place in Uttarakhand is actually the Chhota Chardham Yatra, which translates into the shorter version of the Chardham Yatra. The original Chardham refers to the four holy sites situated in four different corners of the country, established by Adi Shankaracharya back in the eighth century AD. The places he had established as the Chardham were Badrinath, Puri, Rameshwaram, and Dwarka. However, a smaller circuit of the pilgrimage was made out of Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath in the Indian Himalayas of Uttarakhand.Importance of Char Dham in Hindu ReligionThe Char Dham Yatra is considered as a must visited pilgrimage tour in order to get salvation. Every year, more than 2 Lac tourists visit these holy shrines. In Hindu mythology, it is believed that the prehistoric Hindu philosopher Shri Adi Shankaracharya coined the term ‘Char Dham’. The literal meaning of this term is four abodes of God or Holy Destinations. These four shrines are in the region that is famous for the captivating mountains surrounded by a thick layer of snow and an unadulterated atmosphere. In India, the Hindus believe that the Char Dham tour opens the gates of salvation by washing away all their sins. It is also believed that this journey must be undertaken at least once in a lifetime. These four shrines have a great significance and place in Hindu mythology. According to this mythology, Shri Adi Shankaracharya acquired freedom from reincarnation in the Shri Badrinath Dham. The doorway to the Yatra is Yamunotri. The next destination is the renowned Gangotri shrine. Thereafter the pilgrim has to visit Shri Kedarnath Dham and finally Shri Badrinath Dham. After completing the Char Dham pilgrimage tour, the pilgrim achieves an absolute serenity of the mind.Importance of visiting all four shrines in Chardham:-Yamunotri:Yamunotri Dham is a preferred pilgrimage destination for Hindus as it boasts Yamunotri- the source of the sacred Yamuna River. For this holy river, there is a mythological story among Hindus that the Yamuna was the sister of Yamraj and therefore on Bhai Dooj, Yamraj promised the Yamuna that whosoever will take a dip in the Yamuna River will not be taken to Yamlok and he would attain salvation. The shrine is the seat of Goddess Yamuna and the source of the Yamuna River. It is the westernmost pilgrimage in Garhwal.Gangotri:In mythology, Ganga is said to reside in the pot of Brahma and at the feet of Vishnu. Following Raja Bhairath’s penance and prayer for thousands of years for the salvation of his sinning ancestors, Ganga descended on the Earth at Gangotri. Since the earth was incapable to tolerate the huge force of Ganga, Shiva opened his matted locks and Ganga descended on his head. From Gaumukh (the Glacier) she found her way through the winding path of the Himalayas, the Plains and finally meeting the sea at Gangasagar in the Bay of Bengal. Here, a special ‘puja’ of Ganga River is organized both inside the shrine as well as on the bank of the river. A beautiful temple dedicated to Goddess Ganga is located in this pious area. It is believed that the holy river Ganga is the source of sanctity and purity. Therefore, before visiting the temple, the pilgrims take a dip in this great river.Kedarnath:Shri Kedarnath Dham is a prominent pilgrimage for Hindus as it is one of the twelve jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, the God of destruction. Kedarnath, Kalpeshwar, Tungnath, Madhmaheshwar, and Rudranath shrines are together known as Panch Kedar. Kedarnath has found his name from the King of Satyug, Kedar. The lord of Kedar is Kedarnath. The present Kedarnath temple is built by Adi Shankaracharya at around 800 AD according to Garhwal Vikas Nigam. The scientists are of the opinion that it was covered under snow for 400 years from 13th to 17th AD. Still, the temple is hard enough to endure the difficult weather conditions and it even tolerated the recent deluge in Uttarakhand. It is believed that Pandavas built a temple earlier at this place but it could not stand against Time.Badrinath:There is an interesting fact regarding Badrinath. It is believed that there is a very powerful Bhairavi Yantra that effuses out powerful radiations all around. This is the reason that whoever comes here feels a calmness of mind. During the snowfall, when the temple closes down, the regular Puja is said to be done by Narad Muni evident for the fact that the lamp filled with clarified butter (ghee) that was left in the temple by the priests is seen to be still burning even after six long months. It is also believed that in near future Badrinath will be out of reach of the common mass and will be cut off from the world through a devastating landslide. Then, Badrinath will be worshipped at Bhavishya Badri which is at a lower elevation of 2,744 m about 17 km from Joshimath towards Lata.Significance of Chardham Yatra in terms of Scientific and Medicinal ValuesSince the different Chardham temples are located on the lush Himalayan valleys, the ambiance and the environment brings refreshing moods for all. Quite away from the polluted urban life, the area brings an ample amount of fresh air, greenery and less pollution (and the population too) for rejuvenating fruition. The natural environment, herbs, and greenery make everyone disease-free; and meditating along this place leads to a longer life. This was the reason, why our ancient sages (Rishi-Munis) survived for hundreds of years and spent their days in meditating at the highest Himalayan peaks. Of course, it is impossible in today’s scenario but one can still find many local people surviving healthily there for longer years.Char Dham Tours lead the pilgrims tough trekking along the routes to different temples especially Badrinath and Kedarnath region at Chamoli and Rudraprayag district, respectively. A healthy climber (free from diabetes and cardiac problems) can easily opt for the trekking routes and since trekking has many medicinal values, it can make their body healthy and fit (especially the tourists facing the over-weight problems). An adventure freak can enjoy the hiking and rafting opportunities at different peaks and on the river inflows of Ganges and Yamuna for mental rejuvenation and refreshment. Since such adventurous activities regulate the neurotic senses and make the body calm and re-energized by lowering the rate of heart diseases. On the way to Chardham and nearby areas, the tourists can get the opportunity to receive the hymns of Mantras and the enchanting of slokas. The ringing of the temples bells, mantras, and slokas have the greatest scientific significance since they bring positive vibes in the body and neuro-linguistic effect on the mind; even if you don’t know the meaning of those slokas and mantras.Listening to mantras directly lowers blood pressure, normalizes heartbeat rate, brain wave pattern, adrenalin level, even cholesterol level. This is the reason why modern doctors advise people under high tension to sit and listen to music or mantras for a few minutes. The flower offered in the Badrinath temple is called Ban Tusli (Scientific Name- Croton bonplandianus) which remains fresh for longer days and that is why it is preferred to offer at the temple. This variety of flowers again recommended by Adi Shankracharya is of such species that they do not fade. The Ban Tulsi flower is used both as a fuel and detergent so it also has the cleansing effect. The shrine of Lord Badrinarayan is made of Shaligram Stone, a highly sacred stone that is scientifically a fossilized remain of creatures from the ocean called ‘ammonites’ which became extinct 65 million years ago during the ‘Cretaceous’ era. It is believed, during this era, the Himalayas was a salt-water ocean, Tethis, and was separated by two large chunks of landmass both of which moved towards each other and collided. As a result of this collision, the entire marine life was destroyed and converted into fossil buried under the sedimentary rocks that today is called the sacred Shaligram Stone. Thus the Saligrama is worshipped for six values of life – Righteous Living, creation of wealth, protection, sound health, pleasures, and spiritual attainment and the Badrinath shrine reflects these values for perfect reasons. So, even the tourists who are not intended for religious reasons can also aptly visit the great Himalayas and explore the Chardham routes to experience these afore-mentioned scientific and medical reasons. These are the reasons why Chardham Tours is carrying the greatest importance worldwide for ages.Day 1: Haridwar-Mussoorie-Barkot (220 kms, 06 hrs drive):Drive to Barkot/Syanachatti, one the way visit Mussoorie & kempty fall.
